As a compulsive tinkerer, I was amused to read about one of Mike Watt's basses on his website (the yellow precision, about halfway down):

2011 fender p-bass deluxe special
this plays really good, made in mexico
neck has narrow nut like fender j-bass
I replaced original pickguard w/this black
one when I tore out the active electronics,
replaced body w/yellow warmoth alder one
and replaced the split pickup w/a d allen one
along w/passive controls and a gotoh bridge
my buddy dirk did much work on this!
Watt always mods the hell (and rocks the hell) out of his basses, but I like the idea that he acquired a P deluxe, replaced the body, the pickguard, the pickup, the active electronics and the bridge, but kept the neck - because it is Jazz width!
