It depends on the type of LED chosen.

The formula is:





Resistance = Supply Voltage - LED Voltage Drop
_________________________________

LED Current




So, to use some likely figures:

Supply Voltage = 42V
LED Voltage Drop = 2.1V
LED Current = 30mA

... would need a 1330Ω resistor, which doesn't exist. :)

So you go for the next highest value, in this case 1500Ω (or 1.5KΩ)

The only other thing you need to consider is the wattage of the resistor, I won't bore you with another formula, but for the above example you're going to need a 2W resistor.
