HI

I hope I've got the right forum for this, if not, please re-direct.

I took this old jazz pickup out of my 65 P-Bass. Obviously it's been retro-fitted but the cloth wire but the condition seems to point at it being 'original', in terms of maybe being fitted early in the life of the bass.. Is it an original Fender pickup or is it something else?

Many thanks in advance for your help

The bevelled ends of the pole pieces, laquer and burgundy colour wire suggest that this is original. Fender changed to grey bottom pickups in 1964 but some black bottom pickups were used until up to around '67 so it may not be out of place in a '65 bass.

Could be an original, best to locate pictures of others and do a 'spot the difference'. Andy Baxters website may be a good point of reference for pictures.

Good luck

There's a coupe from AB's site with black bottom pickups. His site has excellent pictures of the gear he's selling. Identifying these is mostly down to experience too and looking for the finer details. Knowing the history of the bass can also help work it out, but it does look like an old one to me.
