Hi Basschat Folks,

Total newbie (to the site) here, hope this is the right place to post this....

Been playing upright a couple of years now, and looking to upgrade from the Czech plywood jobbie I've been learning on... I've a chance to go and see a bass described as a "Michael Poller", which is apparently a Czech or Romanian bass, bought second hand in the early nineties. Reckoned to be a solid (not laminate) bass, the chap's selling it on behalf of someone else and is not a player himself (the owner having passed away). He's looking for a grand for it, anyone know anything about these? Am I wasting my time?

All the best,
Dave

I don't know a huge amount about double bass but I do have a Poller which is Romanian made.

I haven't played many double basses but when I took it to some specialists to have the pickup installed they told me it was a great bass for the price I got it!

Think I got mine for about 600, but still!

Reading that back, I don't know if i helped at all...

I've got a Michael Poller solid wood flatback. Nice tone and fairly balanced. Not the loudest bass but I think it could do with a visit to the luthier for a tweak or two.Check that the back braces are not going slack on the back by tapping on the back and playing vigourously-you'll hear buzzes. Also check joint between neck and fingerboard is straight by looking from scroll end. The woods are pretty decent in these basses with fairly fine-grained tops. I paid £1200 for mine, so you're in the right ballpark if it's a decent bass.

Good luck
Iain
