old US Fender P bass's:- truss rod adjustment

there is a great US P bass timeline thread on the Ebay links, then something else cropped up which makes some fakes very obvious...the position of the neck adjustment, head end or body end (or should that be heel?)

can anyone say 'for sure':-

1/ where the adjustment should be for a given year, or spread of years?

2/ does it differ for P bass/Jazz/Tele bass?

3/ does the adjustment position change for maple and rosewood fretboards?

4/ does it change for painted finish?

5/ anything else we should know?

and if a 77 sunburst P bass with maple neck should have body end adjustment, well I think I will simply give up my search for a late 70's sunburst with maple neck and pass the job on to Hercule and his grey cells...
