Hotter output from bass

I have a 100w valve amp, and to date, I've never been able to push it into overdrive with my 78 P bass - something which I always put down to relatively low output pickups. I even bought a DHA preamp pedal to help boost the signal and get the grit (works a treat, and is also useful as a DI and extra EQ section)

However, tonight when soundchecking, I did the usual turn the bass up full and play a bit (pedal bypassed) and to my surprise, there was a distinct lovely overdriven sound instead of the clean one. Somehow, the output from my bass had increased by a significant margin. Then it dawned on me - I was using my brand spanking new cables from OBBM.

I'd recommend these to anyone - brilliant.
