SVP Pro problem

Hi. I have a noise problem with my SVP Pro preamp. This is excessive mid range noise when near the amp.
My bass is a Yamaha TRB 5P (first version) which does not exhibit this problem with my other amps.
The noise diminishes markedly when I move away from the amp. I have lifted the ground from the power amp, reinstated it and lifted the ground from the SVP unit, to no avail. The amp & preamp are mounted on "HUMFREES".
I have had the SVP for many years (blackface) but not used it very often, though it was in a rack for many years as a standby, powered up but hardly used.
Question: could the problem be valve related, even though they have not had much hammer? ( I did buy the unit secondhand so it may have been hammered, also I have never opened it up to see what valves are in there.)
From reading other threads about the SVP I think it may be a noisy design to start off with, though the basses proximity seems crucial.
Any help gratefully received.
