A mate is popping round tonight with a minidisc recorder for me to have a play with. I think it's something like THIS. Anyone used one of these to either record your "pure" signal, or a mixed signal? Are there any tips/tricks worth knowing?

Can be useful to chop and change a song's arrangment around to try different arrangements but, that needs a bit of practise.
Okay for recording live music but the compression can be harsh.
Handy all the same.
