I'm currently using a 120W laney amp and it isn't very good it has a slight hum off it a louder volumes and I want to get something that'll help get rid of that and give a better tone. would a preamp help? I have no idea I wouldn't even know how to wire it up, completely useless. I usually DI out to the pa and don't need anything big. or should i just invest in a good amp and cab? anyone had experiences with the PJB bass buddy? Mr. Foxen Posted November 14, 2010 Share Posted November 14, 2010 If you get a preamp, might as well get a PA type power amp to go with it, cheaper and more headroom than the Laney. A secondhand Crown, QSC or Peavey power amp and a VT bass will sort you for anything drivey, and the bass buddy and one of those sorts you for flexible clean. Phil-osopher10 Posted November 15, 2010 Author Share Posted November 15, 2010 you see the thing that is good about the phil jones bass pre is that it has an onboard compressor, i know it doesnt allow for all the tecnicallities of ratio etc. but surely something is better than nothing and i don't feel like paying for a proper compressor.
