Five strings have never been as fashionable as four strings and have always sold many less items. I'd say the guy was correct.

In a shop, around £400-£500 trade on a Bongo sounds about normal to me; if anything a good deal. You'd perhaps get more selling it privately but it's definitely a buyer's market just now. I'd say the guy was correct.

Guitars that look different are harder to sell and harder to resell. Most people want a Fender or a Gibson or a clone of those styles. I'd say the guy was correct.

Bands have images and the kind of guitar or bass is part of that image. You may think it's crap, however I don't think it's crap. Besides which I'd say the guy was correct whether or not you think it's crap.

I've never been asked to change a bass myself but then I would either try hard to turn up with something suitable or I wouldn't be interested in the band in the first place.

I do try to use a different instrument for a different band. Otherwise not much point having different instruments.

I sold it on here and got £800 for it and the lad was well happy.
Sounds like times have changed, must be a lot of bands that look perfect in every way....
I must really be out of touch with reality after 25 years away from gigging

This... however I've never been asked to change my bass as I usually pre-empt the question by getting a bass I think will fit.
As far as I'm concerned it's a great excuse to buy another bass! ...Like we need excuses, right? :D

Not personally, but I'v heard of bassists that have been made to change basses to fit the bands image. He isn't making it up, it does happen. If I was in a band that decided to take that route, I would no longer be in the band :)

But the rest of what he told you seems to be utter rubbish, fivers are more popular now than ever I would wager.

Could always tell whoever said to change the bass...." I can change my bass but you will always be fugly" TaTa.... :P

  4. Visited Kennys music in Dundee when i was home last and took in my Musicman Bongo 4 to be checked over before selling.
I was looking for a decent second hand 5 string after buying a cheap one and liking the extra string, now they don't have many 5 stringers in the shop and he started telling me how 5 stringers were not as fashionable as 4 stringers these days and not as common so that's how they don't stock them, i thought that comment was a bit silly considering how many 5's are on here. He also started on about what he would give me for the bongo if i traded it in..£4-500 which they will try on you anyway, then he started on about how guitars that look different are hard to sell and even said he knows people who have had to change their guitar as the rest of the band didn't like the look of it which really put me off the guy as personally i think that is just crap.
Has anyone experienced this problem of "sorry mate, your sh*t hot but that guitar just doesn't look good enough for our band".......

  5. Up for sale is my Musicman Bongo 4, good condition with only a couple of really small marks, nothing noticable unless really looking close. Imported from America 2 years ago but looking for a 5 string bass now as bought a cheap deville (sound control) bass and really use the 5th string a lot so I want to get a decent one.
With the 2 x 9v batteries the EQ on the guitar has huge bass and also great tone especially with the 2 humbuckers which you can switch between.....I am using a Markbass CMD 103 which is powerful anyway but sure this would be great with any decent amp.
I think the number states its from about 2006 also.
    Price includes shipping.
    Musicman hard case included
£800. MADE MISTAKE OF PUTTING IT ON AT 900!!

people can ask what they want. If you don't want to pay that much buy it off someone else. If you can't find anyone else selling and there is only one then they can set the broad secondhand price. If you don't like that then pay 20% more. .... what are you moaning about?

One of the reasons I ALWAYS suggest getting a multi FX unit to folk whom are new to effects is to get to know what different effects do & to find out what you're likely to use in a band setting. Saves a fortune on "bling bricks". :sun_bespectacled:

Buying 2nd hand is a good thing to do if you're not 100% if the pedal is gonna get used, that way you can sell it on at minimal/no loss.

Totally agree, just not long started back playing after 20 years away from bass and i bought a zoom B2 to see what's out there and it's a great thing to be able to sit at home and fiddle with things till you get something you like, you may like the sounds on a mulit fx unit enough to keep it or you might buy a pedal according to what you use most on it.
Also, don't use the headphones with it only, as your amp will sound totally different.
