1. /
What is it that you don't like about the current pick ups?
They seem to lack a bit of punchiness and the output is very low. I use a wireless system (so no external preamps) and it hardly twitches the signal meter.
 2. Hi I'm looking to upgrage the pickups on my Standard US Jazz with S1 switching - What do people recommend? I play a mix of styles - mostly finger style but with some pick and some slap thrown in. I've been looking at an active emg j set but I've got the S1 series / parallel switch and like the series (precision style) setting but emj tell me you can't wire active pickups like that. That got me considering emg JHZ passive pickups and a BTC 2 band eq to replace my the tone control - would I be able to keep the S1 switching with this setup? Feel free to recommend anything else - I have a budget of up to £200 and if I can't keep the S1 I suppose it's not the end of the world Cheers Dan
 3.
Tis lovely, I can get a lot out of my two pickup version but yours must do the lot! The blocks are great to look at, I took mine to Cardiff Guitars and the owner loved it, says he has a collection of his own! I'm tempted to start collecting myself but probably need something like an MIA jazz to begin with. Do you gig both??
It does make most sort of noises - the most unusual thing is a balance control across the strings which I've never seen on anything else. Recently I've been a bit biased towards the Jazz (probably coz it's fairly new) but since starting to talk about Clarence on this site I have been missing him and am going to start rotating them.
 4.
How heavy is it?
Not sure but an awful lot heavier than my MIA Jazz - I'll stick it on the scales sometime soon and see if it will register. Hoyer have now told me that it is a Type HG 454 which is very rare and was made in 77 or 78. At the time it was their top of the line bass.
 5.
Never seen a Hoyer like yours before - it's a bit of a beast! I'd speculate that it's a 70s bass, based on the fact it shares a bridge with Hoyer's strangely erotic Rickenbacker copy: If you don't mind shelling out for a subscription to month's worth of guitar porn, it might be in one of the catalogues on the Vintaxe site: http://www.vintaxe.com/catalogs_european_hoyer.htm Otherwise, sign up to the forum there & post some pics - the guy that runs the site is a genuine enthusiast & will probably ID it for you if it's in one of his catalogues. Jon.
He is a bit of a beast - heavy as can be but sustains forever and does everything from a low clean dub to a trebly rickenbacker sound. Managed to get hold of a newly reborn Hoyer website and they have given me some info - turns out it is an HG454 which are apparently very rare. It was made in 1977 / 78 and at the time was Hoyer's top of the range bass. Cheers
 6.
Hi Dan, I doubt it, I've only just arrived in Cardiff last year studying at the university - nice city but I have yet to get stuck in to the music scene here. Live lounge seems the best place for it. I've sent off for details from Germany about the Hoyer so it should come to me any day now! Oli
We've gone a bit off thread but if you like vintage rock / blues there's a good open mic night at the Claude on Albany Rd on aThursday - amps & a bass usually provided and often people looking for someone to jam with. Cheers Dan
 7. Some more photos. One feature on this bass that I've never seen before is a volume balance across the pickups - you can actually choose to have the G or E string louder.
 8.
Cool stuff, I've done the same. Only just realised your up the way in Pontypridd!!
Yeah just up the road, you look familiar - I expect paths have crossed somewhere. Perhaps at Triban? I play in Tattsyrup, used to be in Michael's Bones & Hair o' the Dogma Cheers Dan
 9.
Good work!! Thats awesome!! We made it to 3 haha What did they say about yours?
Only found the site 2 days ago. Sent photos and serial no today. Will let you know
 10.
thought i would upload a pic of my early 70's hoyer 5045 bass. this is the only one i have ever seen and it was lust at first sight! lol. looks like an EB-3 but sounds like a rick on steroids! I've stuck some rotosound flatwounds on it and it now sounds amazingly warm and fat! if any one can offer some info on this model please get in touch.
I've just found a website for hoyer guitars (who have been brought back to life) I e-mailed them about my different model Hoyer (pics attached - battered and bruised but still fantastic) and they got straight back in touch asking for serial no. and pics and promising to see what they could find out. Here's the site http://www.hoyerguitars.com/Hoyer_Guitars/Hoyer.html Cheers
 11. I have had this old (I think late 60s / early 70s) Hoyer Bass for about 20 yrs and have never been able to find out much about it. I did once see a photo of one in a book (unfortunately in German so I couldn't read what it said) which if I recall correctly labelled it as an HG454. I've just been through all my digital photos and amazingly I haven't got a decent one of the bass and I can't get at it at the moment - I'll post a better one soon. Does anyone know anything about these basses please? Cheers Dan
