1. Ahhh a good post thisen!

I like to think I'm as passionate as most other bass players but at times I can that perhaps I'm a bit more driven than some, like some of the guys I teach and know, all have different approaches to it all, one of them seems to only practioce when I teach him but I know at the end of the day he's just focused on the band and doing his bit for the band he isn't concerned with being the enxt Wooten or anything really and I respect that, yet on the other hand, the other guy I teach is driven and is still amturing as both a bassist and musician, when I started teaching him he was cocky, arrogant and swore by only 2-3 bassists but within the first week or so of being on the music course he apologised to me and asked for serious help and i like to think with my help I've sent him on a good raod to becoming a damn good bassist, and teaching these guys does make me think that I'm an alright player, lets face facts only a few bassists will actually "Yes I am very good" but I know I can go into a room and play my bass comfortably and use the theory I know to a standard that it can impress people but then again it isn't about amazing or impressing people but it's nice to know when you have. But I know I've got a long way to go before I become the bassist I want to become, I guess its an age thing, being in the bracket of the younger guys on here we have some advantages in Youtube coming along when it did so were exposed to mroe bassists with greater ease than some fo the older guys when back in the 70's and 80's it wasn't always to easy to find out about but thats not say they not benefitting now either.

I think I just know being 18 now I have years to come which will bring new basses ,amps, new bassists and all kinds of influences and will ultimatley shape the bassist I become, it's just now I'm midly happy with what I can do and Im sepnding between 2-4 hours day practicing many things and also listening to music in great depth, and I can look back and see where I was and know i have imrpoved and all I can do is improve further, I just think sometimes some people set out to be the next Wooten or Clarke or Miller that they end up becoming a copy and realise they're not really doing anything that hasn't already been done before.

  2.
Another vote for Tye Zamora of Alien Ant Farm, if you haven't give these guys a chance then your definitely missing some great basslines/tracks. Check out these songs:

Tia Lupé - Latin influenced song with some good fretless playing (good bass fill at about 1:30)
Never Meant - Some great use of harmonics
S.S Recognise - Some good solid 16th note riffing and a bit of slap towards the end

There's loads more I could suggest as this guy is just a great player!
Even the AAF standards everyone knows, such as: Smooth Criminal, Movies, Attitude, These days etc...are all supported heavily with Tye's tone and his groove inspired technique.

And also he's damn entertaining in the videos if you pay attention to him.

  3. "Save yourself the cash....go straight for the Thumb Bolt On laugh.gif

The Corvette's good but it's a bit like Wilma and Betty, you'd go with Betty but you'd be thinking of Wilma.....(Which 90/80's TV sitcom did that quote come from)"?

    Red Dwarf of course.

Hmmm strangely enough Ken Smiths are starting to appeal to me alot lately, as are MTD's, but otherwise I'm Gas-less for a good while.

  4. I've always enjoyed watching this solo, from 3:22 onwards it gets more intresting, and strangely it sounds quite familiar to the Transformers theme tune, and the harmonising will always make me grin especially when he sighs when he screws up his harmonised fill.

  5. I'd be quite interested in knowing where you got the bridge from please Kevin man, as it would go nicely on my USA Deluxe and fix some minor inotation problems I've got and these bridges have great reputations for improving tones further.

  6. Ryan Martinie - Mudvayne
    James Leach - Sikth
Arif Mirabdolbaghi - Protest The Hero
    Sam Rivers - Limp Bizkit
    Dwayne Wright - Solo gospel
    Justin Raines - Solo gosepl
    Nick Fyffe - Former Jamiroquai
    Jimmy Haslip - The Yellowjacktes
    Debra Killings - Solo artist
Dirk Lance (or Alex Katunich) - Former Incubus
Tye Zamora - Former Alien Ant Farm (He really is that good if you give AAF a good listen, great tone and knows his theory)

  7. Kiwi the pictures are hidden somewhere deep and dark and grizzly inside my pc, and thats where they stay, for the benefit of everyone!

The jazz just makes me go weak at the knee's.

  8. Raising the pick ups will increase the volume by a certain amount if thats what your mainly looking to do, but also as you've lsited it is a personal preference, some of us have the pick ups just under the strings so they act as a rudimentary ramp or some prefer to have them further down, both for comfort and tone wise as well.

Really Paul man its just a case of raising the pick ups and seeing if it eliminates your problems and if its comfortable.

  9. If you look around enough you should come across some USA Deluxe jazz basses, for their price (Just over £1000 new, usually 2nd hands one go for £600 or so) they are exceptional, any tone under the sun and a twist on the standard jazz boths looks and feel wise and tone wise as well, that said, Lakland's are pretty much the same as well, it's just the classic case of trying them.

  10. Those Dunlop ones were in particular because there's this tiny little washer like thing which has to go into a very thin groove on the corresponding bolt, I knackered my thumbs just trying to get them to stay on, they're not going to come any time soon, but thats kind of bad thing because if I need to adjust the strap and need to take them off, I'll hazard a guess further blood will be shed, they are that stressful.

  11. I'll let the pictures do the talking, but all I will say is my gas is satisfied for a good few years.

Almost looks like a Lakland Dern' it?

Though it took me an hour putting on those damn Dunlop strap locks, a task which entailed drills, blood, sweat and Iron Bru.

  12. Josh - Playing for about and a half years now, for the last 2 it's been all about finidng my tone and honing my technique and lately it's really been paying off, and one other major thing lately for the last 2 years, and thats I've been aaquainted with a certain aspect of bass playing, and thats grooooooooooove!

Ohh and equipment wise I'm very very very happy with my Deluxe Usa Jazz 4, punchy as a baby chav.
