1. Hi All,

I play a headless five string which uses only standard strings, not double ball end. Trouble is, the nipped off ends of the strings are a deadly weapon in waiting (See pic)

Any suggestions for making the sharp ends less dangerous? Tape looks terrible and when I trimmed the strings right down to the block that was enough to start one of them unravelling. All ideas welcome, not least because if I don't fix this then sooner or later the keyboard player is going to end up with a lacerated ear'ole.

    Cheers All.

  2.
These are real nice cabs and for £550 the pair (or less?) a real bargain. I had the same set up and FWIW I actually prefered the slightly (4lbs I believe) heavier non neo version.
Thanks for those comments Alan, they're much appreciated, and I do understand your point about the non-neo version.

  3. Hi All,

Much as I love this bass, there's simply not enough room in my life for it any more. It's Hungarian, blonde (and beautiful) and according to the previous owner was dated to the 1940s although I've not decided whether I'm totally convinced on that point. It's 3/4 size, it's been stripped back sometime in it's life. It's clear that at sometime in it's life it's had a neck break near the heel but it's been well repaired and shows no sign of any instability. The fingerboard could do with re-ebonising sooner or later but is otherwise sound. String height is quite high, about 18mm at the end of the fingerboard and I always intended to get my local luthier to bring it down a bit but somehow never got round to it.

There are all the usual signs of having had a proper working life with various dings and dents, there are some previouly repaired cracks on the front near the f-holes but looking inside you can see they've been well-cleated. The bridge is a relatively new Aubert, and there's a no-name pickup installed which works perfectly well, I used to pre-amp it with my Sansamp into a GK MB150. It's currently strung with Corellis which were new in 2008, and sounds very pleasing.
There's a very robust, almost new case with it (Tontrager I think) too.

Looking for around £1000 or trade for a Steinberger CR4/4M possibly. I'm in Hertfordshire, near St Albans if anyone wants to try it out.

    Cheers all,
    Mike.

  4. Hi All,

The clearout continues. My two CXL cabs are available. I'm pretty sure you all know how good these are.

The first one was bought new from Overwater a couple of years ago. It's the lighterweight type, and has only been gigged twice. Lovely condition. SOLD

The second one is a few years older and heavier, and has seen a bit of action. Still in great condition though £250.

Or make me an offer for the pair?

    Cheers,
    Mike.

(All still boxed and completely un-gigged)

  7.
I don't think you can go wrong with a GK MB150. Available second-hand on eBay for 300-350, hold their value, are small enough to take anywhere on the bus with an EUB, and you'll never need an upgrade.
Seconded, it's a really versatile piece of gear that amplifies an EUB (And a 'proper' DB) extremely well.

  8. I think we've all been through this at sometime or other. Back in the early 90s I gave up completely for ten years, sold everything and never thought I'd come back to it until a conversation with my old guitarist staretd me off again.

Like you I've been going though this period of apathy at the moment. I've not picked up an instrument since last November, just couldn't be bothered. Until someone posted up some Ray Brown vids in the double bass form on BC a day or two ago. Now I'm inspired again, and having fun with the DB.

So, just ride with it until something sparks your interest again (And it probably will).

  9. The album I most enjoyed with DT playing is the John Martyn live album recorded in Germany (About 1986 I think). You can hear every note Danny plays and his tone is fantastic. Reccommended for Martyn fans as well.
