1. Just a quick one people,

I've have recently aquired a USA G & L L2000 (Having sold my Aerodyne Bass in the process). My question is, which of these 3 basses would you plump for? a:-

Squier VMJ Fretless, Squier CVJ or Tribby L2000 fretless?

I obviously know about the L2000, as i already own a fretted version of the beast, and i love her. A fretless would be a really nice edition, but the fretted CVJ does look great. Can any of you people vouch for either of these Squiers? If so, which one is best? Which bass choice will best compliment my new bass? I already have a tone monster, so maybe the fretless L2000 will be too similar. Out of the 3, which 1 would you go for?

    Cheers,

    Mat

  2.
If you're getting excessive finger noise on the strings your technique is wrong. Change that and you fix the problem.

What strings to use is a different subject.
Im sure that my technique is fine. Thanks though. The noise isn't excessive and out of place, it's a natural byproduct of 2 bumpy surfaces sliding across one another e.g - Finger tip ribs and roundwound string coils. Maybe i could burn my fingertips down so that they are just nice clean scar tissue lol! It's just more noticeable the more treble is added. Some people feel those nuances add to the overall tone and feel. I however am in search of limiting the unavoidable string/fingertip friction grating sound that is only realy heard when sliding up the strings when dialed in to particular tones which are treble heavy. I want smooth, smooth, smooth but still with enough brightness & clarity for more picking styles. If you have a magic trick that solves this entirely, and it's all down to technique that i have overlooked or missed out on, then im all ears. Cheers

  3. Cheers for the feedback people. Im looking to not really spend too much, so i will probably look out for a 2nd hand peavey micro bass, seeing as these are getting rave reviews. I agree about the rumble's. I used to have a Rumble 60 before i got my Bassman, and they are good sounding amps. Not too sure how the 15 would hold up though

  4. So, i have a new bass which i am totally over the moon with (USA G & L L2000), and i can now get a vast array of tones out of this beast.

Now, my question is, what strings are best to fit, if trying to eradicate fingertip and string coil friction noise that i am currently experiencing currently on my roundwounds (especially when sliding notes using tones with moretreb). I use to have a p bass and was used to low booming full sounds that didn't really have much mid and top end, but now i have all these tones that i would like to use, i need to minimise/eradicate the fingertip/round coil friction that creates unwanted sound when in these newfound tonal ranges.

Are flatwounds any good? Im not really looking for a vintage string sound or anything too modern either, but a string that is a bit of both. I still want as much mid/Treble clarity in the strings, but just without the friction scrapes that are enhanced by these frequencies. Would Flat wounds fix this? If so, would the compromise be a more vintage tonal quality to the strings. What about groundwounds? Are they a happy medium?

    Please help & advise,

    Thanks for reading,

    Mat

  5. I am in the market for a small practice amp for home playing without disturbing anyone. I already have a Fender Bassman 150 for gigging with but i need something small to practice with at home. I've been offered a 2nd hand Marshall MB15 for £35, and a 2nd hand Fender Rumble 15 for £50. Are either of these any good? If so which one is best? Are there any other compact low wattage practice amps that i should consider?

Please point me in the right direction.

    Cheers,

    Mat

  7. Hi there. I have a Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass that im putting up for sale/Swap.

It is in excellent condition, minus a couple of small chips in the surface paintwork in a few places ( See pictures), and only cosmetic. It is a fantastic bass and has been very well looked after.

I have upgraded the standard tuners and bridge to heavy duty Gotoh replacements. I have also upgraded the jazz pickup to a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickup. £170 worth of upgrades in total.

It has just been restrung and serviced too.

I will be puttting pictures up tomorrow if you're interested. I'll sell for £400, and i'll throw in an aluminium Harley Benton Flight Case for the bass worth £75 for free, or alternatively i am open to swap suggestions, especially Fender Jaguars & G & L L2500'S, however any 4 string, 5 string, 6 string, Fretless and semi acoustic basses of a similar standard may be considered.

Let me know if you're interested.

    Cheers,

    Mat.

  8.
Hi Mat.

It's be kind to wallets week! ('Celebrated 52 times per year.)

With any of the Fenders I've owned over the years, achieving the right balance of neck relief, good string action at the bridge AND nut, intonation, and pickup height (level with the 'guard, and high enough for full-sounding string capture, yet low enough to minimize magnetic string-damping) made ALL the difference between a so-so 'guitar', and a BASS which played like butter & sounded like gold.

    Re shielding:

The photos which are now missing from the early part of that thread have been archived in post #103 as an MS Word .doc file.

On the remote prospect that you don't have an application which can open said file: Open Office

It's only a matter of time before most bass players (and guitarists) learn how to do their own setups because, in the end, only we know how we wish our instruments to feel and perform. :)
What a response! You Legend,

  9. Hello fellow Bassmen/women

Moving on from a previous post of mine, where i was considering trading in my Aerodyne for a G & L L200, as i was in search for more tone, i have decided to just upgrade the pickups on my Aerodyne instead. I have already upgraded the stock Jazz pickup to a "Hum cancelling" DiMarzio UltraJazz, which hasn't actually cancelled any hum at all, but maybe this is down to additional cavity shielding being needed. I had the UltraJazz professionally installed, so i know that the grounding has been done properly.

Anyways....My question is, what would be, in your opinion, the absolute best p/j pickup set that i could buy to replace my current pickup configuration?

And also, does anyone know where in Surrey/South London i can take my Aerodyne to be fully cavity shielded/Grounded by a professional?

As an alternative, If i were to get my Jazz professionally shielded/Grounded, and it really minimized the Hum on the DiMarzio, I may keep it installed and need to only replace the Stock P pickup. If i were to do this, what would be the best P pickup to replace it with?

Thanks for reading my thread, and please, i need your help,

    Mat
