1.
I had an SR500 for a long while (5-pc wenge/bubinga neck on mine), which I fitted with Nordstrand Big Singles to replace the Bart MK1s.
I'd avoid the mahogany body ones as they are heavier and the tone seems quite dark, regardless of pickups. I could never get a particularly Fender-esque tone from it no matter which pickups were in there, though the EQ is versatile enough - the pickups just aren't in the right places. I tried what was probably an SR600 in a shop once and it was significantly lighter, that'd be the one I'd go for. But if I wanted proper precision/jazz sounds, I'd look elsewhere.
Thanks for your insight & feedback. Im really only after a lightweight bass guitar with p bass passive tone. I guess looking elsewhere is the next step...but where?

  2.
I don't know how the new SRs compare, but my SR1000 started off being used for rock & now gets used for folk, country, jazz & electro (such as house, DnB & dubstep).
The powercurve eq has a huge range of sounds.
Versatility- That's good to know. I guess that as much as anything else, it's all in the fingers, but good base tones to start with is always helpful.

  3.
Maybe Ibanez would answer this if you mail them ?

I was talking to a guy gigging with a rock band in a pub recently who was playing an SR600 because he said it was the lightest most confortable bass he could find as he had a bad back.
This is exactly why i am looking at the SR basses. The thing is, i really dont want a "Metal" bass & that is the only concern with some of these SR's (as they seem to have this reputation), but the new single coil Nordstand Big Single equipped SR1200 really interests me - It certainly looks more traditional. Do you think that this particular SR would cater more specifically for the traditional bass tones used in Country/Folk/Rock/Pop?

    Thanks

  4. Now I know that all basses - even identical models, differ in weight from instrument to instrument due to individual wood densities of body parts & components used, but i would really like to know which model out of the Ibanez SR series is likely, in general, to be the lightest in weight due to the types of woods & components that they are constructed from.

The SR's i am looking at are:-

    SR300 - Agathis Body & Maple/Rosewood neck

    SR500 - Mahogany Body & Maple/Rosewood neck or Jatoba/Bubinga neck

    SR600 - Ash body & Jatoba/Bubinga neck

    SR700 - Figured Maple/Mahogany wing body w/Maple center block & Jatoba/Bubinga neck

    SR1200- Ovankol top/Mahogany body & Wenge/Bubinga neck w/KTS™ TITANIUM Reinforcement

Also, in your opinion, which one of these basses offers the most versatility in tone & which one is the best value for money?

& can i get Precision & Jazz style tones out of any of these?

    Please advise

    Thanks

  5. Hi there, Im looking at getting a lighter weight bass guitar & have obviously stumbled across the Ibanez SR range in my searches. Im particularly interested in the new SR1200. Has anyone played it? If so, what were your impressions of this bass. Is the EQ On/Off swith the same as a Active/Passive switch? & will i will be able to get more traditional sounds out of this puppy, as well as the newer hifi sounds (im guessing?)?

Im also looking at the SR4500E, which comes with the USA Bartollini pickups. What would be the best choice?

Are either of these a marked improvement over the SR500 - 700? If there's not much in it maybe i should save my money & go for the cheaper option.

    Please advise if you can

    Thanks

  6. What do you think of this:-

I've read that these older models are more highly regarded than the newer models coming out under the bass collection name, although the new Jive & Power Basses have recieved high praise for guitar & bass magazine.

I played a nice, light Ibanez SR700 today - it was lovely to play.

    Need a nice, light bass.........

Or do i blitz the credit card & get a status streamline? (maybe not the best of ideas actually!!)

    Still tempted though..

  7. Due to a recurring back & shoulder problem i am regrettably having to sell my beloved USA G&L L2000 to fund the purchase of a lighter performance bass. I will sell for £800

I'm also willing to do a straight trade, or one with additional money either way depending on the trade. I am looking for a Status Streamline 4 in particular but will consider other Status models or other basses as long as they fit my requirements for weight & performance. They must be Light & they must be professional instruments - no toys please. This L2000 is by no means heavy - I'd imagine it's no more than 9lbs but i havn't weighed it yet. However due to my back & shoulder problems getting worse & my slight build, even this is now too much weight for me (hence wanting to get a Status Streamline....Any others i should look out for?)

As far as the bass goes, it is in perfect condition apart from a tiny bit of belt buckle rash on its backside - but this is only slight. It has been professionally set up to G&L factory specs, with action & intonation spot on - It is a beautiful player. It has just been strung with D'addario XL Pro Steels 45-105. The bass has a jazz sized neck.

The bass comes in a G&L Hardcase, which has a a bit of cracking & splitting to the plastic casing on it's bottom right corner, but it doesn't in any way negatively affect it's protective purpose - This was done by clumsy workmen when the Hardcase was in storage (without the bass in it) whilst i was moving house. The bass resides at my recording studio & escaped the heavy handed morons!

Please follow the link to the G&L L2000 pictures from my photobucket account where.

I am based in Sutton, Surrey/Greater London. Demo's welcomed. I can may be able to meet depending on distance.

    Cheers,

    Mat
