1. Hi Ben,

I've seen the name around (Hector's House). I'm in Horsham so I guess you guys have probably played around here ...

How are your cab builds going? I've built my own cabs in the last couple of years (my own designs) & I'm very happy with the results, but haven't really been able to compare them directly with anything else.

I'll look out for your gigs ...
cheers,
Andy

2. Great little mixer. Mackie build quality. Great sound.

4 x mic/line channels
4 x stereo line channels
tape in/out
sub & main mixes
aux send
internal effects
usual stuff
lots of knobs, buttons, sliders & LEDs
nice yellow bits

I think I still have the original box & manual, but here it is on-line

Only ever used at home, and then only rarely, so virtually new condition.

All yours for just £90 + delivery

3. I have an Eminence Deltalite II 2512 for sale.

About 18 months old & effectively mint condition. I had it in a cab I built for a few months, but then replaced it with a Fane, so it's been back in its box since the start of the year.

Cheapest I can find these new is £115, so I reckon £75, including postage is a pretty good deal.

I'm also building a new cab to go with the 4x8 that I just built, so I have a 1x12 custom cab available if anyone is interested. As mentioned above I've had it fitted with both the Deltalight & a Fane Sovereign, and it sounds great with both.

It's finished in a blood red stain & laquer (the finish could have been a bit better, but hey, it was my first attempt - and it does catch the eye)!

Built from 15mm baltic birch ply, self-bracing, and complete with steel grille (needs finishing as I never got round to spraying it), corners, internal foam damping & mounting plate for 2 jack connectors (but not the connectors) - sorry, but I'm keeping the other bits to complete my replacement cab.

The timber and parts together cost around £60, but if anyone can make use of it I'd be happy to take £25 + delivery.

Or you could have the cab + speaker for a cool £100 - bargain!

See photos (note, the cab is complete in the pics, so you have to imagine it with a few bits missing!)

4. If you haven't already come across them, check out the Clifton upright & mini-upright.

http://www.cliftonbasses.co.uk/

Fabulous hand made uprights by Mo Clifton in Blackheath. I've been playing a mini-upright for the last year (short scale length, just a bit longer than a 1/4 size DB) and it's as close to a real DB sound as I've heard from an EUB. His standard upright is a regular 3/4 size & even more striking to look at. They're made to order, and for what they are, very good value - although from what you've said, probably a bit out of your price range at the moment ... worth waiting for though - took me over 10 years from when I first saw & heard one till I could afford to get one!

Oh, and Mo's a really nice guy too, and makes some great bass guitars & other things as well.

5. ***** STILL AVAILABLE *****

Didn't have any takers last time round, so trying again ...

Maybe the price was a bit high, so have decided I will accept £570 + shipping if you want it delivered ...

It really is a fabulous instrument, I'm just not playing it and I have some other things to pay for :)

6. I bought this pignose new in the early 1990s - serial no is 92/1018, which I'm guessing means it was made in 1992 which seems about right.

It's been used very little & always at home, which means it's virtually mint, apart from a bit of dust & one of the strap buttons is now held in place by a nut & bolt rather than the original rivet (I had to do this soon after I bought it, but in fact it's an improvement).

They're going on eBay for around £80 to £100 as far as I can tell.

Happy to take £75 including delivery, or will consider trade (+/- cash difference) for compact guitar combo (for home practice) - decent quality, e.g. fender, vox, marshall etc.

7. Thinking about selling my Status Electro, as I'm not really playing it much these days.

It has been my main bass for the last 2 or 3 years, but I started on EUB a few months ago, which gives me the acoustic sound that I originally got the Status for, so I'm now using my Jazz as my main BG as this gives a nice contrast with the EUB.

The Electro is a beautiful bass, and is a much more acoustic-inspired guitar than the typical Status.

The Mark 1 is fitted with just a piezo pickup (later version have piezo plus magnetic), which coupled with the black nylon flatwounds gives a really warm acoustic tone, but with enough punch & clarity to cut through a mix. I use it in a line-up with acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals and drums, and it sits perfectly.

It's also very well balanced & very light - I have no problems playing 2 to 3 hours in an evening & still don't feel it.

I bought it used from Andertons in Guildford 2 or 3 years ago, and I've never seen another one, so I'm a bit unsure as to their value.

The current version (Mark 3 I think) retails for around £1650 (last I looked), so I'm thinking around £650 ... comes with original Status gig bag, but that's a bit flimsy, so I'm happy to throw in a heavier duty Ritter or similar bag too.

Prefer collection, but will investigate shipping if required.

8. Selling this mint Ashdown Mag 300 head.

Bought about a month ago to cover a couple of gigs while waiting for a replacement for my iAmp micro, which I now have, so I need to sell the Ashdown on again.

It's in absoultely mint condition. The guy I bought it from bought it new in Sept last year & had never gigged it, just used it in the studio. I gigged it twice, at nice clean parties ... so it's still perfect.

I don't have the original receipt, but I do have the delivery note dated 15/9/2009.

Looking to recover what I bought it for which was £170 + delivery (let me know if you want it shipped & I'll gat a price)

It's going on ebay at the weekend, so grab it now.

Photos below ...

9. Offering for sale, or possible trade for a suitable small & compact bass head, my Schroeder Mini 12+

Bought through this site from eubassix back in February, it's the older model, not the lightweight, but still pretty compact & portable.

Pretty well mint condition, and a great little cab. Especially for acoustic-ish/upright sounds.

Tweeter is currently disconnected, but it's all there.

The only reason I'm selling is that I've just built myself a lightweight 1x12 cab which sounds so good that I want to build another one, so I need some cash for the parts!

Looking to get back around what I paid for it which is around £250 plus delivery (if required).

Alternatively, would consider trade for a compact light-ish weight head, as my EA iAmp has just gone bang! Preferably something with switchable channels & mute facility.

Photos attached ...

10. Selling my black Steinberger Spirit XT-2.

It is a really nicely balanced - and so easy to play. It stays in tune for weeks (thanks to the Steinberger tuners) and is so light you can play for hours without realising it.

It's in fabulous condition, apart from the missing 24th fret, but since I've never actually used a 24th fret in my life I haven't missed it!

Bodywork is virtually mint - no significant dinks or anything.

I've had it for around 7 years, and gigged with it for a while to begin with, but haven't used it much for the last 5 or 6 years, so decided to move it on. It's great for local gigs though - with a lightweight amp you can just sling it over your shoulder & walk to gigs.

Comes with the original gig bag + a set of flatwounds for those mellow moments.

Looking for around £225 plus delivery (if required)

Check out eBay listing for details & photos

11. Thanks Phil - great article - makes a few things clearer than they were before.

Interesting point about xmax measurements. I've always known different manufacturers have different approaches, but never worked out how to compare them. The Eminence specs frequently look better than Fane & Celestion - that's obviously one reason.

The Beymas sound interesting - I've looked at them before, but not found anyone who's actually used them.

My next project will be to replace my ageing Peavey PA cabs, so they may just fit the bill.

I also picked up a copy of the Eminence designer software from eBay - it seems a bit more comprehensive than WinISD, whcih I had been using. Do you have any experience with it?

cheers, Andy
You've a lot of things to consider. Try reading this for a superficial skim of some of the technical issues. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/columns/gea..._your_cabs.html

There are a few main issues with speakers for bass:

Frequency Response: this divides into those speakers which are basically flat (some Eminence and Fane), which gives a DI into the PA type sound and those which have a midrange peak (like some Eminence and Celestion) which will give a more lively and punchy sound but more coloured and characterful. You will need to also consider the bass resonance which will define the bottom frequencies you can reach Celestions bass speakers for example go nowhere near bottom E and speakers that go really low are usually less efficient because of the heavier cones. at the top you need to go to at least 4000Hz unless you use a tweeter/horn and speakers that go to 10,000 Hz sound noticeably cleaner to my ears.

Magnet size: a big magnet allows you to do two things well. It improves the control of the speaker cone or damping and it lets you have a combination of more speaker excursion and/or efficiency. It also allows you to use as smaller cab. Look at the figure for Qts to judge this, a Qts of around 0.4 is a useful figure to aim for. Above this means a smaller magnet and usually a bigger cab, below this means a bigger magnet but below 0.3 you are getting to a very tight bass which is not to everyones taste.

Excursion: how far the cone will travel before the coil comes out of the magnet. Most speakers run out of puff at low frequencies and high power because the cone is asked to do too much and this varies from one speaker to the next. The critical figure is Xmax, the bigger the better. Beware, Eminence use a different way of measuring this from Fane and Celestion who are more conservative. Multiply their figures by 1.5 to roughly compare with Eminence.

I've recently used Fane 15's and 10's in my designs and they are the bargain of the moment. They are of very similar quality to Eminence and look like they could be made next to each other. Eminence are the market leaders and their range is second to none. Celestion's look a little odd to me; their bass speakers have very high resonance figures (well above bottom E for their 10's) and Xmax is poor even allowing for their conservative rating system but some people swear by them.

One speaker you might consider is the Beyma SM212. Their price has gone up in the UK because of the exchange rate (they are made in Spain) but I built two PA speakers using these and I use them for small gigs for bass. They are beautifully made, quite loud (98dB for 1W), quite light and sound gorgeous for bass. mine are in a 40l cab tuned to 40 hZ.
12. Like quite a few other people on the forum, I'm currently building my own lightweight bass cab. I picked up an Eminence Deltalite 12" driver off eBay, which seems to fit the bill & I'm playing around with cab designs - small, lightweight, powerful & suitable for BG & EUB are the criteria (no real challenge then)! Should have it completed over the next couple of weekends.

But it got me thinking about what drivers are used by some of the other manufacturers. My Schroeder Mini 12+ is fitted with a Fane Soveriegn 12-300 & sounds really sweet (the tweeter has been disconnected). And I'm thinking the Sovereign 12-500LF could be a good choice (if weight isn't an issue).

I believe that EA & Hartke use their own proprietary drivers, and Aguilar & Bergantino use Eminence (but are these the same drivers that are available to us regular punters)? But what do other speaker cabs use? G-K, Eden, Ashdown, Trace, Barefaced, Mark Bass etc?

In the end it comes down to personal preference, but I'd be interested in anyone else's thoughts/knowledge/experience.

Cheers!
