  1. Phil, just to confirm, yes it does sound OK as a closed cabinet, however I do thing that is does lack a little "bottom end". I've only been able to try it in the dinning room so far, will be taking it to a jam session on Sunday, and while it does shake the chandelier even at low volume the port will make a difference. Hopefully I'll add the port in the next week or so and will let you know. Thanks again for everything David
  2. Phil, many thanks for the help, it's much appreciated. As I said, for me as I have the ply and no drain pipe it might be simpler. I've now loaded the driver into the cabinet as it is and at low volumes it sound great, although I only completed this today and have only had the chance to try it with my Ashdown Rootmaster 800 (at low volume). I'm ging to see how it sound with the TC Electronic amp later this week. Still waiting for the grill to arrive too. I have a ruminate over which path to take regarding the port and let you know the results. I really appreciate all the work and support you and the others involved in the development of the BC cabinets, thank you. Regards David

Take a piece of paper, or a couple of A4 sheets taped together, draw your circle on one side. Use a pencil in a piece of string if you don't have a compass. On the other side rub the pencil around where the circle is then turn it back over and use like carbon paper. Yoi could also cut a circle out of some light cardboard, a cereal box, put in on your baffle and draw round it. Measure and draw a box where the driver hole should be so you can align your template. Clamp your jigsaw upside down in a vice and rotate the baffle around the saw rather than the other way around
  4. I've completed the basic cabinet and since the picture was taken have fitted the driver. I've posted elsewhere that I'm considering a box/slot port rather than a tube, I have enough ply left to make the box and as I don't have a hole cutter or pipe the correct size for a tubular port thought this might work. I've checked a number of online port calculators, many of which give different answers, however the one that looks most correct, if that is such a phrase, gives dimensions as 4cm x 4cm and a depth of 5cm. Could I ask if this sounds correct. If I get it wrong I can just cut another baffle. Thanks for any help David

That's very kind, of you. I've got plenty of 12mm ply left which I can use. If I get it wrong I can always make another baffle. Thanks again for the very kind offer. David

Thanks for the comments. I probably didn't put the question in the right words. The design calls for a tubular port and as you say I'm looking to have a rectangular port, or box shape for the want of better words. the reason for the change is simply that I'd like to get the cabinet in a useable shape for a jam session this Sunday. To use a tube shape I'd need to have to wait for one to be delivered, whilst I can add the box shape using some wood that I have to hand. If its a simple matter of making the box shape with the same cross section opening and depth then that's something that is easy to do. If I get it wrong I guess I could always cut a new baffle. Thanks again for the help and advice, David

Today at the Mens Shed workshop I had time to cut the BassChat 1x8 driver aperture and all went well, I'm hoping to be able to get it to a testable state Wednesday. I have one question regarding the cabinet design that I'm hoping someone can help with. I'd like to include a slot rather than use a circular port. I've done a bit of web searching and it would appear that, whilst this is a possibility, when it comes to try to calculate the slot dimensions every online calculator I use produces a different answer. My preferred choice would be to use as near to square as possible dimension, and the nearest I get using the online calculators is a 4x4cm slot with a depth of 5cm. Any advice or help would be more than welcomed and appreciated. Thanks, David

Having finished the two BC1x10's I decided that I'd have a go at the BC1x8 which is well under way. At the same time I have also decided to build something to house the 15" Eminence driver that I'd been given a while ago. Both underway and at different stages of completion. I used an opensource plan as the basis for the 1x15 using WinISD to attempt to tune the final design. Only time will tell how it sounds. After these it's on to finishing the two bass guitars that are in the pipeline, a VOX Phantom tribute, planned to be short scale, and a new old stock Dan Armstrong body that I bought recently. It's a good job woodwork was my favorite subject at school.

This is one of the BassChat 110's I've made. I covered it with van carpet. Very red I know but it's different, which is what I wanted.

  11. I promised I'd add some photographs of what I'm building, so here goes: Lightweight, compact ported 1x15 with an Eminence 150W speaker One of two BassChat 110's using Eminence 10" speakers VOX Phantom Bass Tibute build in progress. It started off intended to be a short scale but I also have a 34" scale Jazz style neck so still contemplating which. Or even if it may end up as a Bass VI? I'm not up to building my own neck's, yet, but am working on it. I'm hoping the body will work out as I had to lay it out myself. I'm not sure about the headstock shape at the moment. Could be 2x2 or I've also designed somthing similar to the VOX. Twin locking footswitch for the effects on an Ashdown Rootmaster 800 1x12 cabinet using an un-branded bass speaker. Made this just for something to do and in order to prevent the speaker getting damaged kicking around the home studio. The "Home Studio", which is a room above the garage. There's been a few changes since this was taken, and a few more to come. The Peavey has been sold, and the Laney Richter RB8 will hopefully go as well. The 1x15 will come up and be used with a TC bass head, with one of the 1x10's and the Ashdown head as my travel rig and the other one left at my playing patners home studio. As I mentioned earlier, I've just bought a Fane 8" and will be building that into a BassChat eight inch cab which will probably replace the 1x10 used in the travelling rig making it even more portable. Hope I've not bored you too much with all of this, thanks for looking. David
  12. Having been a member for some years (15), and posted a few time, I know I've never really introduced myself, so here goes. I started playing bass in the 60's, playing for quite a few years till family and work took over. I played in cover bands in and around Essex and East London and for a while I became a pro. As some may have seen from my previous posts, I recently returned to playing bass in my seventh decade and found that the the world of amps and cabs had changed since the time of my Hiwatt and 4x12 cabs. Being bereft of gear, with little income aside from my pension, I set about sorting out something to play, and play through. I'd sold my early Mustang some years ago but still had a no name bass that I'd done some work on. However having been a short scale player in the past I set about looking for something reasonable in both quality and cost to use. As far as guitars went, my first new, to me, purchase was an Ibanez Talman TMB30, an OK bass but a little too heavy for my damaged shoulder, so I bought a secondhand Hofner Shorty, then a Gretsch G2220 Junior Jet whilst at the same time putting together a custom (homemade) short scale P style bass. More recently I've added a Squier Bronco and swapped out the PU for a 9.5K one from Toltec. I've recently crossed over to the dark side and picked up a Squier Jazz bass, which I have found that, even with my arthritic left hand, I can play OK and have decided that I'll stay with it. The Ibanez and Hofner have gone and the Bronco will go, leaving just the Gretsch and Jazz, along with the homemade P. I also have a Squier Base VI. I also have a couple of Yamaha acoustics, an FG335 from the 70's that I bought new and an FG 12 string I picked up recently. These sit alongside a Squier Strat which I've swapped the PU's on. I'm also part was through building a Vox Phantom tribute bass. Amp wise, along the way I picked up a couple of Laney Richter combos, an RB5 and an RB8, not realising that in the intervening years since I last played either amps have got heavier or I've got weaker, so a rethink was needed if I was going to continue to play. The RB5 will sit under the desk in my home studio but the RB8 has to go. For cabinets I've recently built 2 Basschat 110 cab's using Eminence drivers from an old Ashdown 210 cab, these have impressed me with both their capabilities and light weight. Not wanting to give up old school totally I've also built a 1x15, again with an Eminence driver, based on a compact ported design. I've yet to finish this so not sure how it will sound. Finally today a Fane 8" driver arrived so I can build a 1x8 Basschat cab. My thanks to Phill Starr and everyone else for the designs, support and advice that you all have provided and offered. I'll add some images later. David
  13. Thanks everyone for the help. We think that we have come to a reasonable price and the charity shop has it up for sale. Not yet on their eBay site as shipping for guitars is sometimes a challenge for the, Thanks again. David
  14. I volunteer for a local charity shop, I PAT and repair the electrical items and sort out any musical instruments that get donated, and we had this come in recently. The truss rod cover say Edge and it looks right, but none of the examples I can find on the web quite match up. Either the headsock logo is different, or they are single PU models or active. This one is passive. I've looked at a couple of Dean serial number reference sites but nothing comes out for this one. The reason I'm trying so hard to get a difinitve model is so I can price it. Prices for Dean's vary so much and as it's to raise money for the charity it needs to be priced right. Any advice is much welcomed. Just to confirm, this is NOT for sale here. It will be sold by the charity either out of the charity shop or on their eBay site.
  15. It looks like a clean sweep for the Ashdown, which was my thought. Hopefully there's no problems either way with the exchange.
