  1. With the eminently sensible suggestion of the sharpening thread becoming a sticky, and a couple more threads/discussions within threads cropping up about various techniques, would it perhaps be handy to have a subforum for techniques etc? There's loads of really good advice that is squirrelled away within particular build threads, and it might be good to have somewhere to feature it...

Just a thought.... feel free to shoot me down/delete.

...actually - the repairs and technical forum already exists doesn't it - doh!

I still think the Genz Benz 2x12 is the best vertical neo 2x12 when you consider the price and weight.

Particularly when you can pick them up for £350 or even less if you're lucky.

I like the quality of their parts but delivery can be quite long (8 weeks last time).

    Cheers

I think it can depend on whether they have stock or are in the midst of having a new batch made.

  4. There's a magic roundabout in Hemel Hempstead as well, though having used both, I think the Swindon one takes the biscuit....

  5. You've got me excited about table saws now, Phil. However, I REALLY shouldn't be buying tools when we are expecting to move house in the near future. I checked Screwfix, and they actually have one for £109 - 1500W rather than 2000W, but it's comforting to know that it's possible to get something for not much more £££ than the LIdi special, so I really shouldn't rush in ;)

  6. I used a strap handle on my 25kg 1x12 I made ages ago (18mm baltic birch, using the EV TL806 plans). I used teenuts for the strap bolts though - not just a screw into the cab timber. It was absolutely fine.

  7. Not sure which model you're being offered the use of, but I played through one of these a little while ago.

    ...in fact this very one.
The 1x15 was very deep and a touch boomy on stage, but the amp sounded great - loads of headroom, had the Zoot sounding very nice indeed.

Glad I don't have to carry it around though!

The design is staying as it is :)

I agree - it will be the right way round when the basses are being played, which surely is when it it meant to be seen.

  9. Master is the main volume control - i.e. the volume for the power amp section. So you adjust the overall volume with that. If you look at it, you will see the master is labelled at approximate power output levels, with 0W, 40W, 160W etc marked on the dial.

Gain is the preamp volume control - so that allows you to set the input to suit the level coming from yout bass/DI box to prevent the pre being overdriven (unless you want it to be).

The Alpha 12 weighs 2.4 kg, the Deltalite II  2512 2.3 kg, so neo doesn't always mean lighter weight. A Delta Pro 12 is 7.4 kg, so that's the price/performance range where neo would save weight. Still, the most weight savings come from using well braced 12mm plywood, rather than sparsely, if braced at all, 18mm.

I'd forgotten the speaker was an Alpha.

Couldn't resist it I've modelled your cab tuned to 55Hz and compared to my 30l cab It will give you just over 2dB more bass from 100hz down to 40hz (fundamental of bottom E). That extra box volume will give you noticeably more bass in other words, at the cost of a little power handling but power handling is still good, there's a dip to 300W at 90Hz and it handles 180w at bottom E which is pretty good, way better than the Eminence you started looking at. In practice you don't get a lot of fundamental from the pickups so unless you start using stupid power and an octaver you won't have problems at all in any normal use. There's still a bit of extra 'punch' at 120Hz but it's not a bad frequency response at all.

Use one port of 110mm (plastic waste pipe) 15.5cm long or two 64mm (guttering downpipe) vents at 11.2 cm long. (or 3 at 19.2cm) You'll get a little wind noise at full power but you probably won't notice it in practice.

Phil, out of interest I tried firing up WinISD to see the graph you get with these numbers (46l box, 55Hz tuning). To get the same port length I needed to take the box volume down to just over 40l - so I assume the 6l difference is you taking account of the driver and port volume?
