So I woke up early and thought why don’t I make a 400 mile round trip up to Glasgow to go see the Reverend bass collection at Merchant City Music - I may have a problem - I’m selling most of my basses but keep seeing the buzz and Reverend - and had day free so hey.

Anyway tried the Decision P which was ok - neck was alright but i can’t get over the extra offsetness of the bodies. Next I tried the Triad and it had 2 really really nice pickup options out of the 5 - the bridge pick up was thin but the neck and middle together was great. But the aesthetics are not for me.

Whilst I was there, the staff were attentive but also let you get in with it. So I tried some more options- JMJ Mustang - yep good 👍 Nate Mendel P - awful set up and just wasn’t feeling it - FGN Jazz - didn’t note model about about £600 - very great playing neck - sounds good but not for me - then the Gold Foil Fender Jazz - WTF is going on with MIM Fender? The neck felt awful- £1300 to feel fret edges under binding - it just felt not worth it. Then at more than 6 times cheaper the SX P £200 - great neck - the pups had less output - but some good pickups and maybe bridge upgrade/ tuners could be a really useful back up. I stupidly didn’t have a go of the anniversary 4005 Ric- can’t afford it anyway.

Had quick drive round the city then drive home £60 petrol and no bass bought but tempted to get an SX and upgrade it

Beenlooking at these as well and Glasgow is just down the road from me! At least you got to try them out and see a bit of the city! A wee day out as they say! Don't know if it's your thing but I recently got hold of a Godin Shifter Classic bass. Made In Canada and pretty rare in this country it seems! I love mine and it has a massive sound and great tones.passive but you would not think so going by the output! Check the reviews online .By the way there is one for sale in Absolute Music and on their e bay page! Well worth it I love mine! Here is a picture of what it looks like!

    Personal, telling little about Ray:

In the beginning, to me personally, Ray first and foremost was a great composer, then one of the people who provided the bridge I needed between my childhood's classical music and rock and jazz music.
Much later I realised that he also was a bass monster.

Gentle Giant's music has been central in my life for 50 years, and the band's tightly knit group of fans and friends for nearly 30. We started meeting up in the mid 90s, alternating between continents, and eventually band members joined and would become friends more than objects of adoration.
Two decades ago, also Ray wanted to join, but his health prevented him.

The news of his death hit me harder than imagined, and harder than similar deaths have done previously.

    Non-personal:
Some of you may know that Ray and his then girlfriend are behind the ingenious lettering on the front cover of "Civilian", where the album's title is visible in red within the words "Gentle Giant" in yellow.
This showed yet another side of Ray's ingeniousness (and it took many fans years or decades to discover this bit).

    A man has gone.
    Requiescat in pace.

Very nice words! As mentioned I have only discovered the music of Gentle Giant in the last few months! Heard the name over the years and never bothered to check them out. To be honest I wouldn't have been able to take it all in! But in my opinion they are up there with the greats!! Check them out if you can! RIP Ray. What a player indeed!

  3. Just heard that bass player from Gentle Giant,Ray Shulman has passed away. I have recently just started to listen to Gentle Giant. It's funny how some bands pass you by. But if you get a chance check out Gentle Giant. Ray was a brilliant all round musician as well as a fantastic bass player.

The cat is more important than a sale and its a perfect fit at the end of the kitchen units.

    Def a keeper.........the cat says so. :laugh1:

The cat seems to like the stuff the cover is made of. He likes to sit on the laptop bag! I tell you what he doesn't like....the bass! As soon as I plug it in he runs off! .....no comment!!

  5. Yes....it is! As mentioned I went to Scarborough to get it but my wife and I wanted a night away anyway! I think it's a buyers market at the moment with lot's of great stuff for not a lot of cash! I think this will be getting removed and stored in our keyboard players studio for a bit! Been thinking about getting a Barefaced 2 x10 after reading a few reviews and speaking to someone who owns one!

Yip. I decided to try a 4 x 10 setup after using the Fender Rumble 1 x 15 's for a good few years. I always used 2 as it made it a bit easier to reach the amp!! Seen these on here a few weeks back and decided to tie in a wee road trip wife the wife which involved going to a place near Scarborough and staying over at a nice wee hotel! Had a nice chat with the chap who sold me these,Chris (SgtD) He told me he had more or less used two at most gigs. Anyway I bought two and tried one out at my next gig! Wow!! what a sound ! Clear, deep and punchy!. Used with my Ampeg PF500 it certainly sounds very loud! Anyway managed to sell the Fenders straight away and I am punting one of these as I really don't need two! We shall see what happens ! The cat loves to sit on it so it will be missed!

  7. Looks real enough to me. Early model used and abused!! Let's see what it goes for!! I suppose someone will buy it and do it up! A few years ago I bought a Wilkes bass from E bay. Some of you might remember they looked very very similar to Jaydee guitars of that era. I got it for £25 on a buy now! That's when real bargains came up every day! It was a horrible matt black but in good nick otherwise! Filthy and dusty......but she's good with the kids!!....lol. Anyway I stripped the body of all paint and it turned out to be a really nice mahogany under the paint!  Can't remember what the pickup was...might have been Dimarzio or something like that! I used it about the house but can't remember gigging it. It wasn't really my thing! It got punted back on e bay and I think it went for something like £250. Ah...the good old days!!!

I always assume we all kinda know each other on here but i guess we're not all as close as we think.

I know a few people on BC that are on my FB friends and know the bands i'm in and would hopefully update BC if anything happened to me.

@theplumber being one of my fav bass type persons.

Don’t actually have too much of a problem with the “all original apart from…” language - I’ve probably used it myself at times!

Other than it being a bit mangled on the grammar front it does seem a fairly straightforward way of referencing what’s what on an instrument.

Nothing really winds me up language-wise musically other than people referring to an instrument as “she”.

Can you refer to anything as ''she'' now? It's a bit of a ''pc'' minefield......
