1.
I also have a similar Dean 6-string from around 1995/1996, picture below;

It was my main bass for over a decade, great sound and great neck. I still have it, and indeed it does suffer from the bent bridge effect you've also noticed.

It's been in the wars a bit since that photo was taken, but is still a great instrument. Model is "Dean DB96".

Jennifer
Wonder if that makes mine a DB95?

2.
quick question for you. I've just got mine out for the first time in ages and noticed the back of the bridge isn't sitting on the body. Like the strings are bending it forward.

Is yours like that or does the whole thing sit flat on the body??
I've just checked mine & the bridge is sitting flat on the body. It's still almost in tune too!!. My gold hardware is looking a bit worse for wear now & it looks nowhere near as nice in black. Just picked it up for the first time in about 3 years & it brought back memories of bands & gigs from the past - sigh! It was my main bass for a long time - Still love it.

I'll check mine tonight for you. I'm never sure whether it's best to store them with the strings tuned to concert pitch or release the tension on them.
Mine's still tuned.

4.
I have a 6 string version of that, got mine 98ish, it had been in the shop for a few years before I got it at a heedy discount. I' Also trying to find out what model it is and mine does indeed say made in Korea .

From what I can gather they were basically the same as some of the washburns of the same era. Only differences were in the headstock and the body contouring. The washburn having a more traditional contour.

I tried the dean forum but the only info forthcoming was 'they were from the tropical years' a period it seems that many Dean aficionados look down on .
They probably look down on them because they're made in Korea & are not as flamboyant as other Deans. The headstock is very understated compared to other models but I prefer that. I love the neck on mine & the only thing wrong with the bass is that someone removed the active electronics so it's passive only now. Still sounds good though. Nice to know someone else on this forum has one!

Does anyone know what model bass this is as I've got one (in solid black) & I've never been able to find out much about it.
Notice the cut out for your forearm. I think these were manufactured in Korea probably mid 90's as I bought mine secondhand in early 2000.
For a five string the string spacing is quite narrow which is good for me as I've got smallish hands.

Any info would be welcome.

Cheers!

6.
The minute I saw the word 'Douchebag', I thought "Aha! Must be the rebarbative Mr tune-o-matic, e-bay's happiest seller".

It would almost be worth destroying an e-bay account just to mail him: "thjt is A squire Mike Durnt yo hav stript i have one lik it u Nzi LOLZ, Com 2 iowa i kick yore ass, Kenny bass god" and wait for the detonation.
That made me chuckle - Yeah please please do it & post his comments back here. Go on go on go on go on.

7.
Why do we, as a country, insist on still importing the cheap cr*p just because the factories still make it? You can get decent inexpensive which won't put beginners off so WHY? :)
Yes you're right there is no excuse these days with a good choice of decent quality inexpensive instruments - there are even schemes to help young kids or their parents buy them. I well remember when I started playing the awful guitars & basses that were the only ones we could afford (even then we relied on a friendly shop owner to allow us illegal credit - if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be playing now!). Things like Jedsons & Zentas where you used to cut your fingers on the bridge adjustment screws & the fret ends & you could never set the intonation on them or keep them in tune. Now those same Jedsons & Zentas are increasing in price - madness. If you were lucky you eventually got hold of a third or fouth hand Antoria or Kimbara. Wish I still had my Antoria SG!!

8. Hi,
I've got an Ashdown Perfect Ten Mini Rig on Ebay at the moment SOLD

I've also got a rare Westfield Explorer 6 string guitar (ever seen another one?) in classic black with a white pickguard. It's a copy of the 50's Gibson Explorer with chrome pickup covers rather than the later open type pickups.
It has a set neck & plays really nicely (if anyone is interested in this I'll try to get it out of storage & take some pics). There are a few marks from use but on the whole everything is in very good condition. I'm looking to trade one or both items for a lined fretless bass.

If anyone is interested please PM me.

9.
As the owner of a "Shine" bass, can I point out that this is a "Swift" bass, distributed by "Swift Music of London". It clearly says Swift on the headstock. Shine basses get better reviews than Swifts, and I think my Shine six string is well worth the £60 I paid for it. It's the same bass as has been sold as the Harley Benton six string.
I was recently watching a Shine Telecaster style bass on the Bay which sold really cheaply - it looked really nice & I wish I'd had a punt on it now.
I was given a Swift fretless electro-accoustic bass by someone who had bought it for their lad as a starter bass & the "setup" was truly awful.
It's been sitting in my garage with a heavy weight on it to get the horrific bow out of the neck but I'm not holding out much hope (I don't think the truss rod works!).

10.
Up for sale is this No-name Precision Bass in Sunburst with a Maple Neck. Don't know alot about it other than its solid wood is unbranded apart from a sticker on the rear of the headstock saying "Made in GDR" which I assume is German Democratic Republic. Despite its cheapness its actually very playable after I shimmed the neck and added a Gotoh 201 bridge. I'm only selling as I have too many basses still! The bass does have a few dings but nothing too serious which is reflected in the price.

I'm looking for £75 and would prefer collection, however postage can be arranged.
I think that looks like a Marlin Slammer (although there is no Marlin on the fretboard so it could have been made after they were taken over) . They were produced for a company in Wales (I think it was called British Music Strings) which was eventually taken over by Hohner & then closed down. They were mainly sold through catalogue companies such as Marshall Ward etc. I've just sold a Marlin strat which also had a "Made in GDR" on sticker on it (although I don't think they actually were, probably just assembled there) & had the truss rod adjustment at the heel end of the neck like your bass - hence the recess in the pickguard. My Strat had a nice flat fretboard which I preferred as I found it easier to play.

11. How about this then - anyone tempted?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bass-guitar-Fretless...=item2a0542e4d9

Must be a steal considering how rare three string basses are.
To add to the rarity it's fretless too!!

"The guitar comes with three strings as the fourth string is optionally used. The seller is not responsible for any damages that may occur during postage. None refundable." - I think he's covering all bases (sorry for the pun) just in case the postman re-strings it with a full set on his rounds.

12.
so basically i bought this bass a year ago intending to spruce it up and have it as a back up bass. but then my grants came through and i got a p bass.

im not gonna like. this bass looks like its been in the wars. sticker residue, dents, chips. its pretty beaten up looking. as far as im aware it still works. i used it a few months ago and it seemed to be ok.

im looking to get rid of this because im slowly being over run with gear. either whole bass or could more than likely split for various bits and bobs.
will get pics up as soon as i can.

now adding a westfield p bass copy neck. a few dents and scratches

£40 for the vintage
£15 for the westy neck

open to offers of course
I might be interested in the Vintage - is it active or passive?

Would you post it?

13.
Pmd by mistake , apologies
No problem! - I think they are great basses which make a good P Bass type sound even with the stock pickups, they just get a bit muddy with the treble rolled off. Good basis for building a great bass on the cheap.
I used mine on a lot of my bands recordings even before I fitted the EMG's.

Go for it!

14.
I have an Encore Precision in white. Good guitar, the nut has gone walkabout and the electrics could do with a re-solder, but it's a good project for someone.

See a good picture here. The knobs and everything are pretty good and it should be a useful guitar if you need one.

I'm getting rid of tons of stuff, so check out the other stuff I have for sale. This is for sale at £35.

Cheers, L
That looks like one of the better early Indian built ones with the solid ash body, looks like the one I've got (the special edition they did in a kind of pearlescent white). I've changed the pickups to EMG's & it sounds fantastic!! Sooo heavy though, my back aches after a long gig. I bought mine new around 1992/93.

15.
It's a nice bass, might be up for trading for a smallish combo
Hi,
Really interested in the bass - you say you may be interested in a trade for a smallish combo, what about a straight exchange for an Ashdown Mini rig?
It's a 65 Watt head with two mini cabs with 10" speakers so very light & easy to transport & has a very good sound. The beauty of it is that it can be used in small rooms (house etc.) also so it's quite versatile - for bigger gigs you could mike it up & put it through the PA as I have done a couple of times. It's in very good condition - if you're interested heres a link to it on the Ashdown site:
http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=144

If you do want to trade I would consider delivering/collecting to avoid posting depending on where you are based

Let me know
Steve

16. Just found this forum & thought I'd add a list of some of the basses I've owned. I've been playing for 35 years now on & off. I started as a guitarist but wasn't very good at playing chords. Life changed when I walked into the local music shop & spotted a big black bass on the wall!! It turned out to be a Columbus Grabber copy (& was pretty awful I discovered afterwards but as I'd never even touched a bass I didn't know any different). It was fitted with black strings which totally sold it to me. And so began my dalliance with the dark side.......

Following this in as near chronological order as I can remember:

1972 Gibson EB3
1975 No Name Jap Jazz copy*
Hohner Steinberger headless copy
1987 Aria SB1000
Early 90's Encore Precision copy* (Solid Ash body + EMG's)
80's Jap Squier Precision
Jap Fender Jazz 1975 re-issue
Vester 5 string
Early 90's Dean 5 string*
Late 90's Epiphone EB0
1989 Signature Jazz Bass Export model (home built using NOS Signature body & neck from the States)
Early 70's Jap Kasuga EB3 copy
2007 Adam Black Titan prototype
2007 Swift Fretless Electro Acoustic*
2008 Acepro Electro Acoustic
2009 Dean EVO XM short scale*
2007 Wesley (not sure which model but has Prec/Jazz configuration)*

*= still owned

Think there are probably others I've forgotten!! - I'm barred from entering music shops unless accompanied by my better half (doesn't stop me though - I just buy off Ebay haha)
