1.
I didn't know there was a Vintage Modified P bass...everyone seems to talk about the VM jazz (I have one!) any reason why, is the CVP that much better?
That VMP is brand new, only brought it out at the same time as the Jag, so that might be why you haven't seen it? Also same time as they brought out this VMJ

The VMP that came out at the same time as the natural VMJ that everyone loves was actually white, with a black pickguard and rosewood fretboard, and I seem to remember at least one member on here having one, but probably more. Original VMP-

Also, Circle Of Fifths, there's a CVP that is the current precision shape as opposed to the '54 shape.

Anyway, here's a link to all the Vintage Modified Series, it really is a cool series of basses!

  2. Precision pickup in the middle, MM in the bridge position for me!
I always thought the configuration on some Warrior basses was pretty good. A big MM style humbucker with a jazz bar at the bridge beneath it. As a Warrior owner once said to me "just think, when do you ever solo the neck pickup on a jazz bass?".

Made perfect sense to me and I'm surprised more people don't use this configuration!
Whenever I play a jazz with a pick? Ok, technically not entirely solo'd, as I'll put a little of the bridge pickup in, but mostly neck pickup.

  3.
? :)
I did say it doesn't always make sense! For me there definitely isn't a specific definition for what I'd call a Jazz Bass. Although I've realised the title actually says "proper" Jazz Bass, in which case it either has to be a Fender or a good copy, passive, two single coil "Jazz" pickups, proper jazz neck, and pickguard etc.

  4.
How hard is it to assemble one?
i think im going to use emg for the electronics and they dont need soldering so that shouldent be too bad.
But what about bolting the neck on, how hard it that to do?
easy! i don't know if warmoth drill the holes, but if they don't thats the most difficult job, but even then its a half hour job tops. if they do, which i expect they probably will, then its a five minute job, just whack the plate on (if you're having one), and then screw the four/however many screws you like screws in. if you've got any bolt on neck basses give it a go, take the neck off and put it back on, its not a difficult job at all. make sure it sits in the pocket tightly, which it should with warmoth, and make sure you screw it in tightly.

  5.
I thought the hoppus basses had the P pickup 'reversed' if that makes sense? I thought that looked really funky and sweet. When did they stop that?
Like this?

I think they're foul. I normally prefer the reverse P pickup, that's what I've got on my Taitycaster, but it just looks wrong on these. They've not started yet, anyway, I think it said they start in 2011.

Oh, and Wayne, if I buy this blame my dad Simon1964, he knows I've been after one and has offered to pay half for my 18th birthday! Mind you, he also promised to buy me a Ford Mustang too, but I think that might have been a lie :)

  6.
I'm afraid matching coils wired in parallel do not measure 'one quarter resistance'. In resistance terms, much like putting two 8 ohms speakers in parallel to each other, the resistance is halved to 4 Ohms.
I thought this, but then I went on to assume he could only mean when he has two dual coil soapbar pickups also wired in parallel, resulting in four coils, all wired in parallel. I'm not sure if thats right though, or even if you would wire all four coils in parallel as opposed to each coil in a pickup being in parallel, but the two pickups being wired in series, which would be my first instinct on how to do it.

  7. In my book, the Electric Bass, or acoustic basses that resemble an acoustic guitar, you know what I mean, they're all part of the guitar family. The double bass, however, is part of the Violin family (or whatever that family of instruments is called). But for the sake of the poll, I've put that it is a guitar, because I'm assuming by Bass we're talking about Fenders, Musicmans, etc.

  8. The biggest problem with this, and most new things Squier seems to be bringing out, is that there is only one choice of colour scheme. I'm also not quite sure why it's part of the VM range, it's not based on any sort of vintage bass, if IIRC the Jaguar bass only came out in the 2000's.

  9.
Seriously I hope that's not the case. Because if it is, that's just bollocks. There are so many downright offensive and/or insulting posts in the rather wilder OT threads which are allowed to run and run .... As I say I hope that's not the case.

Ps happy to delete this post if it's completely barking up the wrong tree
+1, I was wondering if it was because of the "time to be a man" comment. I can't imagine it is, but if it is because of that I think it's a bit silly when you look at some of the posts in Off Topic. But I don't think it will be because of that, the mods aren't that strict.

  10. Personally, I'm not bothered by the length of them, or even images when they're something small, like MythSte's doesn't bother me at all. What annoys me are the signatures that are written in massive bold writing. I don't know why, and it doesn't bother me enough to have complained about it before now, but thats just my 2 pence!

  11. I don't really know what to vote for. When they need changing, which depends completely on how much I've been playing recently, and what bass I've been playing. I change the strings on my Taitycaster more than I do on my Ibanez, but thats because I play my Taitycaster more than my Ibanez.

  12.
I've had a couple of alleged GP5 tabs from 911Tabs.com that my copy of GP5 refuses to open, claiming I "need to upgrade" or some such nonsense. TuxGuit opens 'em just fine & it's a whole heap easier to use.

Tux is now on my list of essential software, & I reckon it's Big Red Lever Time for GP.

    Pete
I had this problem, too! Not so much with 911tabs, but with any GP5 file that the guitarist in my band sent me. Even if it was a GP5 file I'd written myself, sent to him, and he'd made a change and sent it back to me, it still wouldn't work for me. No idea why. But that's exactly why I downloaded TuxGuitar.

  13. i do like angels and airwaves, and i do have the cash, and i've been thinking about getting a precision for a little while! i'll have to have a think about this one. mind you, at this price, no doubt it'll be gone right away.

when you say its signed, is it only that john lennon quote on the back of the neck, or have the band signed their autographs, too?

  14.
I go to ulitmate-guitar.

Although since I updated to ubuntu 10.04 it hasn't worked :)

The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't transpose tabs properly if you want to play a song in the original key but with funny tuning on your bass.
ever thought of 911tabs.com? its a group of tab sites, including ultimate-guitar. i origionally used ultimate-guitar when someone put me onto 911tabs. you get all of the tabs on ultimate-guitar, but you also get tabs from other sites.

and to answer the OP, if you hadn't already guessed, i use 911tabs.com

  15.
I'd recon so, as Squier has a better name these days, and as the build quality is gettin better, why not make it a middle of the road, almost MiM Fender?
Almost MIM Fender? Having played some of the higher end Squiers, VM, CV, and even some of the standard series, I'd say that a hell of a lot of the MIM Fenders are almost a Squier. I know which I'd rather buy without playing.

  16.
So, I could use it but chamber it out to help with the weight! Or use some maple that is kickinh about somewhere.

    g
use the maple for the neck maybe? thats what i'd do, ash body, maple neck.
