  1. Dating it from the serial number it is a 2005 mim which quality wise should be fine given what I have looked up online.
  2. Thanks again for all the advice. Sound to me is more important than looks our band looks authentic due to lights, lasers and projections more than having right looking gear. Our drummers kit is nothing like nick masons for example. Just seen this on gumtree and I've asked seller for more photos serial number. At that price this baby could be the one. http://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/fender-classic-series-50-s-precision-bass-black-maple-rrp-£909-/1120196751 If it's genuine ad I'll be very pleased with this.
  3. From what I've read and looked into online and in books its the combination of rotosound flats a bright maple fingerboard and playing with a pick that produces the classic RW clanky sound on the seventies live shows. I could be wrong though! Thanks for all the advice. I've been driving myself mad with what to get. The major problem is can look at lots of basses online but trying things out is a different matter as my local shop in Lichfield has no fenders other than squires and even pmt in Birmingham are unlikely to have a Precision set with flats for me to experiment with. Given what people have said I'll definitely get in contact with classic and cool guitars as the stuff seems well priced for second hand. Much better value than Bass Direct which is my closest large bass shop.
  4. Thanks that's good advice. The look isn't too important as the band is more about sound than having the right looking instrument. I used to play a MIM but that was from 1995 I think. I loved it at the time but it has developed neck and pick up problems over the years and is now neglected in my cupboard. It has a rosewood fingerboard anyway. Be interesting to try a newer MIM before shelling out more on a MIA. Glad you agree about Roger Waters Sig specs just don't seem right for 70s sound.
  5. Hi Chaps Wondered if I could get some advice re which fender precision to purchase. I play in a pink floyd tribute who gig all over the UK and haven't had the funds to invest in a new bass until recently. Obviously a P bass with a maple fingerboard is the way to go. I currently mostly use my Musicman Stingray which I LOVE to death it just feels so right to play but sound wise for that classic roger waters sound it has to be a p bass with flats on a maple fingerboard. My budget is around 600ish Of course there is the MIM roger waters sig but from reviews and listening to tests online although it looks like a good bass I don't think the pick up (quarter pounder) sound is the classic P Bass sound I'm after. Would a 50s MIM p bass be better? I've heard good things about MIJ 57 reissues and there is a duck Dunn model for sale second hand near me in budget (unfortunately modded with an active humbucker pick up that I'd never use) I've also seen this 2007 MIA five string for £695 http://classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses/usafender5stringp.htm This appeals as I am using a separate five string (Ibanez BTB775pb) at present so alongside a Frakenfender J Davey fretless. I have three basses onstage be nice to only need two. What do you chaps think? Any advice gratefully received! Mike
  6. Just open it with vlc or a media player. I uploaded it on here using the forum so it went wierd. It's an MP3 so if you rename it or put .mp3 on the end it should work.
  7. [attachment=193357:OOTD.mp3] Hey all, Here's a bit of twin bass action from Saturday nights gig with Darkside The Pink Floyd Show at the guildhall in Derby. I play a Musicman stingray through a delay and a tremolo for the middle section. Our keyboard player marko joins me on a four string Fender Squire Precision laying down some extra bottom end. It all ends a bit abruptly but hey it's live people...
  8. Yes the guitar shop does have cheap guitars for the teenager first instrument market. But they are nice guys and do good set ups on my basses for a great price

  10. Thanks Chaps. I look forward to oggling gear I can't afford and wasting time I don't have!
  11. I agree you have to be thick skinned to do the function band lark. And I enjoyed it in the main. But some places just make it hard for you to do your job. Caterers would expect the kitchen to be opened in time for them to cook in and to have significant space and time to do their job in. I love to entertain people regardless of musical knowledge, but was more making the point that backing track artists killed the jobbing live scene dead in pubs/clubs/holiday camps for most musicians. Many people will enjoy recorded music as much as live TBH. Its also happening in west end shows as well, which removes work for the dedicated pit bass players. The 'respect' for the jobbing musician is just not there in the way it was in the past, when they were necessary for live entertainment. When I was gigging with a very talented boogie woogie piano player in the nineties he stated fees had stayed stagnant since the early eighties. He ended up doing most backing tracks and just did band gigs for the company every now and again. Can't really go out solo with a bass guitar though! Playing in my Pink Floyd tribute I get lots of respect from both the venues and punters, who give lots of lovely compliments and great response from crowds. They've paid their money to enjoy the gig. Given the costs of running the show we don't make any money though! But I do enjoy it a lot more...
  12. Having previously played in a function band for a number of years. I was constantly amazed at the lack of respect payed by the venue management to the band. Managers saying 'Oh you don't have drums do you. This venue isn't good for drums' - "Well you booked a band with drums". The haven holiday camps were dreadful for it. The would constantly see the band as an inconvience, we were asked if we could pack down between sets as they usually do 'a game show on stage' at 10pm for 15 minutes. Being told to arrive for 4pm to set up and then having to spend ages hunting down someone to let us in. Years ago you would get accomodation paid and a breakfast. Then they gave you subsidised acommodation and a reduced price for breakfast and in recent years they expected the band to book accodomation at the standard rate with no discount on food. Last summer on a holiday at one myself I saw Heatwave play a cracking set at a Haven with a phenomenal bass player only for the compare to be pretty rude that people could now get back to having fun as he cranked up YMCA out of the DJ booth. I just felt so embarassed that a band who had performed their socks off got treated in such a fashion. Or the venue that had a DJ box taking up 2/3rds of the stage, when we asked to have some of the equipment moved so the 4 piece band they had hired could set up retorted "Well we had Rod Stewart last week and he didn't have a problem" said Rod Stewart was two chaps (one singer and a guitarist) with backing tracks. Also go to agree Bilbo - backing tracks and Jazz is a dreadful combination, but the publics understand of the music is poor. Loads of weddings I've played have had a chap in suit doing a very mediocre sinatra impression over some stiff limping backing track with keyboard horns FFS and people lap it up. In terms of earning from a live music situation - one chap with some backing tracks is going to earn a lot more than a band and only people with interest in the music, which is the minority, will care.
  13. Hello all, Been playing bass for around 22 years (gulp). I play in Wolverhampton based Pick Floyd Tribute Darkside The Pink Floyd Show Here's me with me Musicman Stingray which I use alongside an Ibanez BTB775pb and a J Davey P Bass fretless. (A maple fingerboard precision is on the cards for purchase in the near future) I used to use Ashdown ABM stuff but have since moved to Mark Bass to keep the weight down. Anyway hiya one and all!
