Most of the songs I love to play are my own ones. I don't mean that in a big headed way at all. If I spend lots of time writing a challenging bassline, I can generally play it better than I could another person's "challenging" bassline. Just feels good to play something that you've written, I guess.

As someone has already stated, you can't avoid having muscle memory. It's all about learning it properly in the first place, practicing slowly to a metronome and getting it impaled into your brain, as that's essentially where the "muscle" memory is.

*edit* maybe you can avoid having muscle memory, but I'm pretty sure that would mean having a stroke or some kind of disease.

Many disagree with me on this one, and it's make me feel very isolated, but I [b]hate[/b] Epiphones. Yes they are cheap... but that's no excuse for them to be insanely crap. And also nearly any Ibanez guitar. I'm not just saying these things to be unique and cool (like indie kids think they are) but I have never seen an Epiphone I've liked the look or sound of. Ibanez have some [url="http://www.noahjames.com/vintagepage/newmodel/rr550-rr150.jpg"]rare exceptions[/url] but I just can't get into the tone or their ridiculous wizard necks. I've tried to like them, I like the guitarists that play them, but the sound just doesn't do it for me.

Listening to a live version of Backlit by Isis on youtube, and as usual it's blowing my mind. The bit where he starts growling gives me shivers every time. I don't think I've heard a more effective use of growls in a song.

A while ago I started writing lyrics and music for myself, for a personal project if anything. My friend came up with a band name which is just perfect, and I think when I've got an EP released I'm gonna get a band together.

Post-rock, doom metal, sludge, jazz, greasy sleazy funk are just a few of the inspirations being brought forward...

Ah they look brilliant but £50 really is my maximum right now.

Did a search but nothing came up so I'm gonna make a thread about it. I apologise for another advice thread, but I would like some help choosing a gig bag for my bass.

For the past year I have been carrying my bass around in my guitar bag, which is obviously too small so I've had to have a drawstring bag cover the headstock. I really could care less about the horrible aesthetics and the distress it causes when you look at it, but I think it's time I got something that protect the bass properly. My price range is £50 max and I want something that fits my Geddy Lee sig perfectly.

I have searched and searched for them online, but to be honest I'm not really sure what's big enough and what isn't... Aesthetically, I don't really want any bright colours or crazy designs, just a simple, durable gig bag for my bass.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, cheers.

For drop c# on a 4 string, I would try some thicker gauge strings. Anything after that is technique problems or hardware.

Maybe, but I'm still lost as to why all these so called guitarists are constantly going out of tune. If a guitarist is insecure about his guitar being perfectly in tune, shouldn't that give him the incentive to splash out on having his guitar setup perfectly and maybe have better tuners installed? Baffles me, my friend has a relatively cheap MIA strat with a professional setup and it just refuses to go out of tune.

That just sounds like a textbook case of hollow shells of human waste.

Get better gear. I have an LP copy with grover tuners, never goes out of tune unless I do it myself. Sometimes the g string goes slightly out after hours of playing, but no ones gonna notice a quick adjustment like that.

An MIJ Squier Jazz, played one in a shop and my friend has one. Really nicely made and gorgeous tone.

I can't help you, but I will agree, it's god damn nasty. That body shape mixed with that neck literally makes me want to puke. I would love to have one though...

After being inspired by the ever-amazing old funk tunes and Jaco Pastorius to pick up the bass, I thought I could attempt them with my already above average guitar skills, and much to my displeasure it turns out bass is on a level of it's own in terms of playing and understanding music. I can't remember the first song I actually played, but I remember my first gig as a bassist I played Fire by Hendrix.

I'll definitely be buying one of their albums, thanks for recommending them! I love any prog rock which has that laid back, jazzy feel, but still manages to tastefully blend in heavy riffs, especially in "time waits for no one".

Hi all, I'm looking to buy my first 6 string bass and would like something comfortable and affordable. Having owned an LTD guitar and falling in love with it's build quality, sound and price, I thought an LTD bass would be the way to go.

I was just wondering, has anyone owned or played the [url="http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/74577"]LTD B-206 SM[/url]? If so, how is it? Comments on the pickups, active EQ and build quality would be appreciated.

I am asking here because I will not get a chance to play before I buy, from this shop or any other shop. I am open to other suggestions, but I don't really wanna be spending over £450.

Not sure if this will help anyone, or if it's appropriate for the thread, but as a n00b musician I found it quite handy myself (considering I've been too lazy to memorise the circle of fifths). My tutor told me a quick way of finding the key, given the key signature. Logically it's already pretty much obvious, but I wouldn't have thought of it by myself.

Here we have the key signatures, for the sharps all you have to remember is to go up a semitone from the last sharp, and you have your key signature. For example:

The last sharp here is A#, go up a semitone and you have your key, B.

For flats, it's just as easy. All you have to remember is that the 2nd from last flat, is the key... Pretty neat.

That's all I wanted to say, not sure if the same can be applied to the bass clef (sorry to blaspheme, but I haven't learned anything about the bass clef yet), but maybe at least one person will get something from this.

I rest my thumb on the neck pup for the E and A strings, and move my thumb onto the E string to play the D and G strings. Usually my thumb rests almost horizontally on the neck pup, whilst my playing fingers are positioned between the neck and bridge. Probably just something to do with being self-taught, but hell, it's comfy.
