  1. Love that :)

It's odd, but having now spent the last 2-3 years looking at Maruszczyks [including having one made], I think they are at their most handsome in "plain old" Ash with a trans finish.

I don't know whether it's because they have access to particularly nicely grained Ash, or that it's bookmatched or what... but I prefer the look of them over their more exotic-faced burls etc. Particularly when it comes to their F-style models.

Looks like Fralin is experiencing long delays on getting pickups made and sent so Jon will source them elsewhere (BD).

Did he not suggest a set of Oz's custom pickups [like the ones he uses in the JJB sig]? I would have thought Oz would wind them to your spec/requirements.

    (And if you've been to the workshop, you'll know that supply/delivery wouldn't be a problem :D  )

[...] had a friend spray the metal flake - all nitro - black base coat, flake in clear nitro, clear nitro to initial level, black tinted clear to burst and then more clear - need a lot to bury the flake fully (I've done quite a few nitro refins but don't have the equipment for flake plus it is a huge, huge mess and gets everywhere) [...]

Lots of prep, but worth every second spent on it. Absolutely gorgeous 😍

I've got a Bass VI project in the pipeline that will be having a similar refin job soon. Not nitro, though - I don't have the patience :D Seeing this is confirmation that it's going to be well worth doing.

The IN-5 could be a step better for bass than the LP-6 because the woofer is freed up for the bass and the mids are handled by a dedicated speaker.

As an owner of some IN-5s, I can't see how any other monitor in that price bracket comes anywhere close.

In fact, I was about to sing their praises based on the mistaken memory that I paid about £800 for a pair. To discover that I must have paid only £560 - going by Thomann's current prices - just makes them even more of a steal.

They can be extended with a Kali subwoofer too, if required.

They're a bit bulky, mind, so check desk space first.

  5. Yes, it is mentioned. I don't think it's mentioned strenuously enough, of course. "Who reads the manual for a BASS?!" etc.

Also, used ones don't always come with all the paperwork.

I wonder if the reversed truss rod has its roots in Eastern European traditional instrument making? I can't think of much else it could be for it to be a consistent feature of Maruszczyks.

  6. As an owner of an MK1-equipped Cort 5er that came with a proper Bartolini NTMB-F preamp, I'd suggest trying the MK1s with a preamp upgrade first. They're not as "cheap made in China copy" as you may be led to believe ;)

If new pickups are definitely going to happen no matter what, then I'd consider Delano SBC 5 HE/S Drivers or Times Squares: https://www.delano.de/pickup_overview/sbc_5/sbc_5_listing.html

Not only are they top class drop-in replacements that are string-spacing agnostic, but their German origin means you'll probably be able to get your hands on them much more quickly than most US pickups in the current supply climate.

  7. I received mine yesterday. It's insane, the quality that £180 gets you. Other than needing a setup [and decent strings], all the fundamentals are pretty solid. Nice straight satin neck, no sharp frets :)

Which is quite handy, as I bought it to see if it's a good platform for serious modification. And yeah, I'd say it definitely is.

It's not light - certainly not basswood, if my memories of a Precision Lyte in the 90s are anything to go by - but other than that, I couldn't be happier.

    Let the modding begin! 😁

...are both basses 'on' all the time?

Judging by the fact that the controls look standard and there are two pickups, my edumacated guess is that the pickup blend pot determines how 'on' each pickup is.

Been told it will take 4 months to receive, is the quality good as I noticed a few complaints in older posts.

The Elwood I've just received [the purple one above] is top quality, with no niggles. My concerns about the remedial work that was required were completely unfounded - they did a perfect job.

I'll post later with my thoughts and findings about my Maruszczyk experience in more detail... but suffice to say that it's 100% praise so far :)

  10. As someone that has recently been very fortunate to finally acquire a medium-scale ACG after years of distant admiration, I have to say that this is a great price for - let's not forget this - a hand-crafted unique instrument by a master craftsman.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have to pay the remaining 50% of a bespoke Maruszczyk this month, I'd be snapping ead's virtual hand off.

    GLWTS - shouldn't be long now :)

  11. After a smidge over 6 months, I finally have my proper sofa shot:

    maruszczyk-elwood4a-2tonepurple-sofashot

Yes, I may have previously exhibited all the patience of a 5-year-old in Hamleys. But that's all in the past and forgotten now, of course. I am nothing if not a very predictable manchild.

Because, boy... I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it's a bit of a looker, right? I mean, just gaze in dumbstruck awe at the chatoyance on that neck 🧐

Alas, not all is totally perfect. The sofa shot revealed that:

    • The nut is the wrong colour - I wanted white to match the binding. This has already been fixed by Adrian and crew during the "choose your string retainer" phase, however, so that's all good 🙂
    • I ordered string-through-body, and as you can see, that's been missed. Adrian immediately told me they'd fix this, but I am slightly concerned given the less-than-stellar post-build corrective experience of some others [as reported way back in this thread]
    • Separate battery compartments - I guess I should have asked for one dual-battery compartment, but you'd have thought they'd have worked out by now that two single-battery compartments is aesthetically lacking, and incorporated a dual without anyone needing to ask. Is there another reason that I may have overlooked? Balance, perhaps?
    •

So while my experience hasn't been faultless - and I want to stress that Adrian has been lightning fast when it comes to responding to my emails - I'm still optimistic that once I get my mitts on this, it'll be bloody awesome.

Did I point out the gorgeous neck already? Oh.

Obviously, I'll post an update when it arrives.

Sorry - I didn't mean to imply that I'm blaming anyone, or getting poor service!

I've emailed Adrian twice asking for updates, and each time he's replied quickly and with explanation :)

Those of us quoting our old build times (mine were 10 & 12 weeks I think) are pre the B word, Suez and Covid. Sadly, it’s a different world now.

On the one hand: Yeah, of course. Everyone else in this thread ordered their Frogs and Elwoods from atop their radium-powered velocipedes while holding back Wat Tyler and his pangolins. I get it.

On the other hand: TK in Vegas' Jake - as seen on this very page! - was ordered in September, and he's currently spanking the derrière off it[*] as we speak.

Frankly, I'd quite like my sofa shot just to stop daydreaming about the bloody thing 😛

EDIT: Anyway, point is... Like Pierre says, assume 20 weeks. That way, you'll be delighted if/when it probably turns up earlier :)

[*] I imagine. It's hard to tell, given Vegas' famously tight reins on local happenstance.

  14. Ah, right. That'll teach me to daytime drink!

I've never played one, but I've always thought that Tobias basses were some of the more handsome designs. Really well proportioned; the headstock is a particular highlight.

    Enjoy!
