I used an SVT Pro-3 for years with one or two 8 ohm cabs, depending on the gig. IME always a good sound.

    excellent, thank you.

im picking up an Ashdown 2x12 tonight which one day i may pair with a 2x10 for a bit of punch.

im looking forward to carrying a 15kg cab instead of the 40kg cab i currently have

  2. As the title says, I am looking at getting a 2 x 12 cabinet rated to run 300 watt at 8 ohm.

My ampeg says it runs 450 watt at 4 ohm, 275 at 8 ohm.

Does this mean that i would be able to use a single 8 ohm cabinet just with a reduced out put? or would the ampeg fry it?

im assuming the former but there is just no switch to select between ohmage.

any help would be great. cheers

Not really. @Bilbo points are well made and rational. Originals bands don't get paid much because people don't know the songs. Covers bands do for the reason people do.

Like many people here, I'm not going to do cover bands. Not because I think I'm above that, but because I have no interest in it, even for money. To me, the writing and performance of something original is the fun. Now, you can make a comment about me going back to my bedroom to write things nobody else cares about. Hopefully not though! ?

In truth, my disinterest in covers is so great that I wouldn't play any even if they were songs I loved by my favourite bands. Even if I was going to be paid for it. It just doesn't work for me on any creative level.

    Everyone's different though.

    that's basically were i stand.

no issues with people who do love playing covers but it doesn't flick my switch as much as the writing and performance of my own/my bands own stuff.

we're all different and play for different reasons, that's ok in my book.

THat's good. . . . but no one creates out of "thin air".

Every player has a library of influences, lines and sounds in his head which have been accumulated from years of listening and assimilating the music of others.

in fairness you could argue that very little is "original" these days with the vast amount of music available.

i don't deny that my stuff is influenced by other artists, i just don't want to spend my time playing their songs, regardless of how creative i can be with them.

Why do you think you can't be creative in a cover band.

I play in one if Milwaukee"s finest blues rock cover bands.

I never play anything the same twice and we perform a lot of our material in different tempos, keys and grooves at the drop of a hat. Much more creative than many originals bands. It's fantastic.

Plus we have to CDs of original  material mixed into our set list.

My point, all cover bands are not the same.

    Blue

never said they are, and i never said you can't be creative in a covers band. there are lots of people who do it and love it. i don't.

i'm a song writer, my reason for playing music is to write songs. this also means that i go through periods where i don't play (currently haven't played live in 3 years). but i'm okay with that.

i've said before to you, fair play for being in a position where you are in a band you enjoy.

i have no issue with people who are in your boat, or who want to do covers, but honestly, if i did 4 hour cover gigs 3 nights on the bounce then i would get bored quickly.

  6. this is a tough one, ive got a number of bands i would consider "my band" in the way they have inspired me to make music, and honestly i draw my influences from all over the place.

feeder - the band that showed me you don't have to a be a virtuoso to make music people want to rock out to to

angels & airwaves - showed me that any pop punk musician can have dreams beyond their imagination

black stone cherry - for showing me that even fat blokes can be rock front men.

the who - for having the balls to do things other people didn't.

People think my head is so far up The Beatles arse nobody takes me seriously.

As for Ringo, do drums even matter when you have songs that great?

    Blue

i agree with this, drums should form the basis of a good song not be the song.

ringo for his faults provided the base for the others to do their thing, and it worked. nothing wrong with that at all.

Any 112 cab would do for home use. Every manufacturer has one but, depending on the make, maybe 1 wouldn't be enough.

The only single 112 cab I'd try to gig with would be a Barefaced.

Could you keep the 410 in the garage and get a BF One10 for the house?

to be honest, the 410 already sits in the garage.

my main reasoning is that i am starting to return to the band scene and have discovered that i want to travel more lightweight than I have in the past

  9. I currently have an Ampeg SVT 3 pro and a 410HLF cab to go with it, and whilst it has served me well i don't gig or play all that often, so looking to downsize.

Rather than replace everything, i'm considering keeping the head, but replacing the cab with something smaller, perhaps a 2x10 (maybe a 2x12 but not sure i would save much space).

I am looking for a good cab to pair with it for not a massive amount of money.

    Any recommendations?

And just out of interest, how many other people upon being instructed by the dentist, to book another appointment with the receptionist on their way out, walk up to the reception desk, and immediately ask for the receptionists name? Really?
i went to a meeting the other day and was greeted by a male and female receptionist, i didn't ask either of them for their names... they didn't ask me mine either, i'd like to think there is a receptionists forum somewhere discussing whether i was reduced to something less than my worth, but i'm not going to get hung up about it.

I'd wager that some people, subconsciously or otherwise, would have focused on her looks first as a result of having read the first thing given to them in the title...."stunning girl". It's something that is completely irrelevant to her musical output and so therefore the OP has, probably unwittingly, reduced what she's about.
but the thing here as to whether the OP was "reducing her", comes down to intent surely?

his intention wasn't to put the video up here to start a conversation about her looks, he put it up here to display her ability and composition to a bunch of musicians, the fact she is attractive (or not) has only become relevant because he had an opinion that she was.

have we really got to a point where we can't voice our own opinion for fear of offending someone who is never likely to even read this post? the guy is copping flack for bringing us this girl's music, and i think that is unfair.

ok, maybe i escalated it. my point is, that if no one had mentioned the way he had titled it, we wouldn't be talking about it, we would be discussing the music. yes people may have thought wow she's pretty whilst watching it, but that doesn't mean they see her as an object.

What first attracted me to my wife was her looks , is that bad ?

20 years on she's my best friend and I love her as a person

None of us can judge the OPs comment unless they know him and his underlying character.
i don't doubt that the OP was doing anything other than complimenting a woman on her skills and looks, apparently its the ordering of his words that make him a sexist pig.

id wager peoples focus wasn't on her looks until the first "OMG THATS SEXIST!!" comment was made, now we have had 4 pages about it.

a lot of you are acting as if he put the video up and shouted "look at this woman playing a bass, woman are only good for cooking and child rearing", and its quite unfair

  13. sexism - prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.
Misogyny is the hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women or girls

i don't see how the guy posting a video of a skilled female player and complimenting her appearance is any of the above.

lets also be honest, if a video of tom hardy playing guitar was posted amongst a mostly female audience base, do you think they would instantly compliment his guitar playing? would they f***

OP, you haven't done anything wrong, we live in a world were people are so quick to find offence in everything on other peoples behalf you are not allowed to have an opinion.

I haven't gigged for 6-7 years now, since the band i was in then imploded.
Just havnt really found another band since then. I've jammed with a few people but nothing's really kicked off, so i'm mostly a bedroom worrior now.
this is where i am, only mine is only a 3 year break thus far.
that said, i don't even play at home anymore. my only reason for playing is to gig, so if i'm not doing it then i don't bother playing.

  15.
Interesting, as I am the complete opposite. I feel that rehearsing is a necessary evil in order to gig. For me, all the joy of playing is performing in front of an audience. My current band haven't rehearsed for months, we just gig, and if we want to try a new song, circulate it amongst ourselves then refine it over a few gigs.
i agree, i hate practicing.
i only join bands that want to gig. don't see the point otherwise.

  16. Location/Venue: Norwich, cant remember the venue name, but it was like a loading bay painted black with a small stage.

    Your age: 24

    Your bass: Ibanez EDB 600

Your amp: Behringer BXH450 (which i still have) and Harley Benton 4x10

The set list (some of it): a set list of pop punk originals

Anything else that might be funny/interesting/embarrassing: I had been in the band for a week, we were called This Is My Honesty and we had a pretty decent following around Cambridge. we eventually imploded because we had an argument about how the band should progress.

    Pah! That's nothing!

I've played to zero people. Literally. There were no punters at all, so both the bar staff went outside for a fag.

There was no one at all in the entire pub except the band.

    We just kept playing ...
i've had that, it becomes a stage set up practice session then

can be annoying if its 2 and a half hours drive away tho....

Actually my thread title should have read "For Those Who Like To Gig A lot"

I really think, based on BC data we're the minority.
It's a hobby for most, most have full time traditional jobs and families. Some are just indifferent to gigging.
i have a full time traditional job, but would gig every night if i could.
having other things doesn't always mean we become indifferent to gigging.

i crave the stage, but i haven't played live for 3 years because i haven't found a band i considered to be anywhere near a gigging band (and in all cases i turned out to be correct).
