1. Look at New Moon music insurance. I have thankfully never had to claim, but their policy is simple and far reaching, small print minimal and premiums very fair. They are part of Hiscox Insurance who are a great company when it comes to claims (I was a loss adjuster for 30+ years till I retired so know who to spend my insurance money with), and great to talk to on the phone.

  2. Is it possible to buy the part of a Dunlop strap lock that fits on the strap, without buying the bit that goes on the guitar as well (which I dont need)? I have bought both parts several times in the past when I didnt need to, and the thought has just occurred to me that they may be available individually somewhere (I cant find anywhere on line, I admit).

  3. I have bought many things from Mark over the years since he first opened for business, and have never had anything other than first class service and the very best customer care. Mark has even refused to sell me a bass he knew wouldnt suit what I do (he was right, I just liked the colour!). He has done things beyond the call of duty to help me, and spent hours talking to me whilst I tried out everything in the shop, and has agreed very acceptable deals for purchases that make me reticent to even think of going elsewhere for any bass equipment. I can only think that it must have been a different Mark in the shop that day, the real Mark having been bound and gagged in the back room.......

  4. Wedding gig last night. Anything up to 500 people there, so we expected a really good night. Wrong! The first set was punctuated by the odd small child playing tennis on the dance floor, and whilst the second set was a lot better and quite a few people got up to dance, it was a huge hall and they looked lost. The most annoying thing though was that when the dj came on in the interval and after we finished, he played all the old wedding standards (Hi Ho Silver Lining, Tiger Feet, Shang a Lang, etc, and they went wild for it! We are seriously thinking of having an "A" setlist for weddings with a "B" setlist containing nothing but the old standards as an emergency measure for gigs that prefer them. Does anyone else do this? Its not just a case of slipping the odd old one in, but I think this is the second gig recently where the patrons really didnt want anything else but oldies.

Just to make things worse, I was suffering from a chest infection all night so didnt really enjoy the experience, and woke up this morning with severe conjunctivitis! One of the band said "why are you always ill Bob?" How do I know?? Is it possible to have the same fluctuating infection for 2 years? In the past, the Doc said it would get better of its own accord, and tested me just to make sure I hadnt had a heart attack!

  5. Is there anyone on the lovely Isle of Wight, preferably around the Ryde area who may be able to help me out with a really tricky problem I have?

In a nutshell, I sent a bass to a fellow Basschatter back in September to have leds fitted, after he advertized his services on the forum. My cheque for the work was cashed, but after a brief exchange of correspondance, it all went very quiet. Eventually, I sent him a letter threatening legal action if my bass was not returned, and he then contacted me to say that it was nearly ready, just some laquering to do. That was 3 months ago, since when I have heard nothing, and none of my latest letters or messages are being answered.

I was advised to report it to the Police as a theft which I have done, but the Isle of Wight Police say I have to visit the address I have for this person to see if he still lives there but might have been having some kind of problem which has caused the work to be delayed, and also make my own enquiries elsewhere to see what the chaps current situation is. Only then, if I get nowhere will they become involved, and at that time will treat it as a proper crime and do their own investigations. Basically, its a civil matter until all lines of enquiry are exhausted.

I fully understand this, as its quite possible some personal tragedy may have happened in the guys life, but living in Gloucestershire, its going to be difficult for me to play the amateur detective! Can anyone please help who may know the chap (he is well know to the IOW bass fraternity I believe), or be able to check his whereabouts more easily than me? I would be really grateful for any assistance at all thanks, or even any ideas how I might do it myself.

Oo - Er! Where can you get these facially unadorned small persons from, and isnt it politically correct to call them "vertically challenged people"?

  7. After reading a post from SpaceChick, who gigged for the first time only 10 1/2 months after picking a bass up for the first time, I wondered how long it took the rest of us, and what the record is?

I'll start things off. I first held a bass in December 1999, and played my first gig a week and a half later. I had no idea what I was doing, and had everything written down on sheets of paper on a music stand. We started off with "Rocking all over the world", which was thankfully easy, and the "stage" was in the (huge) dining room of a country house in Herefordshire, where we were playing to about 80 totally stoned guests. As the 11 song set progressed, I moved nearer and nearer to the downstairs toilet door, untill eventually I was hiding behind the door so people couldnt see me shaking! In hindsight, I think I could have got away with anything that night, as the clientele were on another planet........

  8. Each to their own, and I respect everyones opinion as its personal to them, but both of these pieces are far removed from what I consider a bass should be doing. Just my opinion of course, and no criticism intended, variety being the spice of life etc.

I did think the guy in the second vid's face looked like his colleague was farting on a fairly regular basis though..........

  9. I've just got back from seeing Steeleye play at the Roses in Tewkesbury, having been a fan of theirs since the 70s, and whilst they have slowed down appreciably (they are getting on, to be fair!), and the gig didnt really get going like their gigs used to in the olden days, Rick Kemp on bass was still absolutely superb. He has, for ages championed Overwater basses, but why he hasnt got an Overwater Signature bass is beyond me, as I would have thought he deserves it (and perhaps sadly, I would buy one......).
He can do all the new fangled slappy stuff if the song calls for it, is incredibly melodic and a total rock type genius. A real "unsung" super star!

  10. I cant believe this bass has come up for sale again! It was mine originally, and is quite the most sublime bass you could possibly come across with every tone in there, as well as being light, comfortable to play and (imho) one of the best looking basses on the planet. It cost a huge amount more than £1,000, so qualifies as possibly the best bargain on this site!

Best of luck with the sale. Whoever buys it shouldnt be at all disappointed.

  11. Mike came round yesterday to collect the Kala bass he bought from me, and we had a real good chinwag! Great guy, super transaction, no problems whatsoever. I look forward to maybe selling him something else in the future!

  12. Mint, spruce Kala U bass now SOLD subject to the usual, and red solid bodied Kala S U B bass, mint, with replacement Aquila Thundergut strings.

Brilliant pair of basses, both in gig bags, only used a couple of times at acoustic nights with the band. It just seems a shame to have them sat there doing nothing. The S U B bass improved a great deal when I swapped the strings on the recommendation of a fellow BassChatter to the Thunderguts, the sound now being tighter (and louder!). The spec for the cool little solid body is as follows:

    Gloss Red

    •Fretted

    •Poplar body

•Bolt-on Maple neck with rosewood fretboard

    •HIPSHOT licensed tuning machines

    •Rosewood nut

•SHADOW active pickup system with volume control and 2-band EQ

    •U-Bass logo gig bag included

The U bass is NOW SOLD.I would like £260 for the S U B Bass please.

  13. I dont know if anyone is aware of the recent problems surrounding the Dr Bass cab building operation in the States (fabulous cabs, great prices but huge failures by the company to fulfill orders/avoid massive delays in manufacture, resulting in serious allegations being made against the proprietor),but upon checking their web site, I noticed the following "apology":

"And we offer our sincerest apologies for the trouble and inconvienence we have had in the past couple years."

Am I missing the point, as surely, if it was an apology it should have said "the trouble and inconvenience we have CAUSED" ?

Have you used yours at a live gig yet? I haven't but I will do soon.

Many, many times, and I have recently lent it to my friend who has now ordered his own. I tried one of the Mackies as well and didnt really like it (too complicated!!). I genuinely think its one of the best things I have ever bought for live use, and so much more convenient than the floor monitor I used before.
