1. OK then, here goes.......

Decided that the whole Stingray thing really isn't for me.

She's the limited edition 30th Anniversary, with 3 band EQ, Mahogony body, through body stringing, rosewood board, and a lovely glossed flame and birdseye neck. I believe that there were only 800 of these built, and the original retail was a whopping £1800. (please feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

I bought her "new old stock" in the summer, and she was slightly shop soiled, but soon cleaned up pristine
The bass is absolutely mint, apart from some VERY slight scratches on the scratch plate. The sticker will be removed properly as well. I put it on there to help protect the scratch plate! :)

She comes in the correct, and mint burgundy and gold 30th Anniversary hard case, and I even have the original box to help protect that! Unfortunately, the case candy was already missing when I bought her, as she had been in the shop a while.

Looking for £1200 ovno, NO TRADES

Bass is located in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, very close to M1. You are more than welcome to pop round, try her out. I make good tea or coffee
I really would prefer collection only.

The photo's really do not do her justice, and make the grain on the body look a bit funny

  2. Cheers Chaps

The 'Ray I kind of have a love hate relationship with. It's gorgeous, but I find it difficult to play for some reason. I'm starting to think about selling her.... :)

The EB2 I have had for about 8 years now. I don't use her much, as she doesn't really fit with what we do. I got her from Electro in Doncaster, and chopped in a Mex Jazz V for her. She's in remarkably good condition, and has a lovely crazed patina to the original nitro cherry finish. Sadly though, at some point in her past, she has had the usual head stock break, but it's been really well repaired. The sound is absolutely huge and fat. I had her plugged into the SVT last week, and WOW!! A few years back, I had her plugged into my full Trace V-Type rig, and there was plaster falling from the ceiling in the rehearsal room!!!

There seems to be a few sunburst EB2's turn up on evilbay every now and again, but the cherry ones do seem a fair bit rarer.

Nice Thunderbird Alex. She looks like a minter

  3. Mine has a distinct aroma to it. When I first got it, it really did stink the living room out though! :)

I have seen another '09 'bird in a shop, and it is way better than mine  So, maybe mine was just a Friday afternoon job

  4.
In keeping witht he TBird theme

Any views on the new TBird Pro's from Epiphone?

Had a look at them yesterday and They ain't bad but what do I know. Very tempted to get T but not entirely sure should I save a little bit and get a Gib or go for the Epi Pro.

    Views appreciated fella's
I recently had a noodle on an Epiphone Thunderbird Pro, and was very impressed. I didn't plug into an amp though. The set up on it was pretty good, and looked well built too. I like the fact that they are a proper through neck, and not bolt like the cheapy Epi's, or set neck like the Tokai :)

  5.
Just had a noodle with my recently aquired '08....can't see any issues at all but I am a Gibo novice.

Just interested in your thoughts above ref the faults.

    Cheers

In fairness, my 09 'bird plays like a dream, sounds huge, and is well built, but the attention to detail is shocking.........I have a list of 20 faults! They're all fairly minor, and I could forgive the odd thing here and there, but you really don't have to look too hard to find them  I just hope that mine was a one off "Friday afternoon" job :) My overall "Beef" is that it is not worth anywhere near as much as I paid for it, and I would actually feel quite guilty if I tried to pass it on through Ebay, etc.

  6.
Thanks alot I think I'll do that. by the way the best price I can get them for?

    Gee
I think I paid around £80 for mine.

Good point about adjusting the pickups, but I think "you gets what ya pays for" applies here. Budget basses can be well built, but will always have inferior electronics, etc, to keep the price down. IMHO, buying one of the current Squier basses, and loading it with top notch pickups, is actually quite a smart move :)

  7. I have the EMG J Set on my Squier Affinity Jazz. I have also fitted a high mass bridge as well, a bit like the bridge on the new Fenders. The bridge didn't really make a huge difference, but the pickups transformed it. The stock pickups sounded OK, but the EMG's sound awesome. I have found that finger style, near the neck I can get really warm, and rich bass sounds, but if I really dig in with a pick, near the bridge, I can get a really good rock/metal growl from it. The J set I bought had connectors at the pickups, but required soldering at the pots. The kit does come with new pots and jack socket, all pre assembled, and much higher quality than the stock components. I had the kit fitted in about half an hour.

I would do the pickups first, and worry about the bridge later :)

  8. Yeah, twas the expensive one :)

My 2009 'bird, despite all it's faults, does a pretty good job of shaking the house apart.

Good idea to start a Gibson porn thread. I'll have to get some decent pictures of my '67 EB2C too

I'm no expert, but as far as I know, the Bicentennial Thunderbird was the relaunch of the Thunderbird, after they were discontinued in '69, and built to the same through neck specification as the original bird. The Bicentennial ran from '76, through to '79, and although they all had the red, white, and blue bird on the scratch plate, only the '76 had "76" as part of the bird logo. Although the majority of '76 Bicentennial's appear to have been built in '77! The first two numbers of the serial number give the game away; 00 for '76, 06 for '77.

I think they were all Thunderbird IV's, meaning two pickups. Think they all had chrome hardwear. Current 'birds all have black hardwear, and black plastic pickup covers. Some of the original '60's Thunderbirds were Thunderbird II, denoting single pickup.

Like I said, I'm no expert

  9. I use one of the original ColourSound ToneBenders. The one with the silver enamel case. Think it's 60's?? Using that with my old Ricky, and the SVT gives a huge, phat, fuzz

If you live anywhere near Derbyshire, your welcome to pop by, and try it out :)

  10.
Was it that 76 bicentennial one?
Yeap! :) I was having a major GAS attack over it, drool pouring out both sides of the mouth..........The Mrs told me to load up ebay and have a look in our watch list.......She'd bid on it, and won it!!!!

It's one of the 76 Bicentennials that was actually built in '77, going by the serial number. the bicentennial 'bird is my all time favourite bass!! Don't know that I would be brave enough to gig it though.....

  11. That white 'bird looks lovely

Speaking of ebay, I too am waiting for a 'bird to turn up in the post......Whoops, had a massive GAS attack, and have seriously hurt the savings account!!! It is my all time favourite 'bird though :)

  12. Looks solid, and straight enough to me, but I think the asking price is a bit steep.

The installation of that neck pickup looks a bit of a bodge to me, and looking at the wear on the front of the body, it's been played a lot.

Me personally, I'd wait for another to come up :)

  13. Personally, I am well used to gloss necks. I guess that comes from playing a Ric, and Gibbo's. The satin finish always feels a bit weird at first on Fendery type stuff, but it doesn't take too long to go shiny!

My 'Ray is a weighty beast, as it has the Mahogony body. the wood on the neck is a really gorgeous mix of flame and birdseye. It really is drool worthy

Dunno, if someone offered me a swap for a tidy Ric I would be more than tempted  Or a 70's Tbird for that matter :)

  14. It would have to be my old Rickenbacker for me

The one I have a bit of a love hate relationship with is my 30th Anniversary Stingray...... Build quality is sublime, but sometimes I enjoy playing it, other times it just feels wrong....... Good example of this is I played it at band practice earlier this week, and it sounded, and felt horrible! :) But went away, rechecked and adjusted all the setup, used it at an all day band practice yesterday, and it felt good, and sounded awesome

I'm starting to think about buying another Ric that I'm not sentimentally attached to

Also took the old EB2 along yesterday, and while the others went off for lunch, I hatched the old beasty out......Wow! HOW MUCH LOW END??

Still have my first bass, and Aria Legend P bass clone. Jap Crap at its finest. Plywood body, but it has a really nice neck, and the tuners are really nice too. Plays nice, and will never part with it. I pick it up at least twice a week

  15. I find my beloved 1980 Jetglo 4001 an absolute dream to play. I semi retired it due to sentimental value/ increasing values/ rarity, but everytime I pick it up, it just feels so right........Plays itself almost....

Hatched it out for yesterdays band practice, and had it hooked up to my SVT rig..... In fact, stuff it, I'm gonna use it at tonights gig! :)

  16.
it keeps distorting a clean signal (in a Bad way)and losing power.....phwwwww
If it's any help, I've had a similar experience with two Trace amps; an AH300, and a V-Type AH600. Both amps started distorting badly, and losing power, then completely quit, and filled the rehearsal room with choking smoke! :)

On both amps, the power amp board was completely fried, and needed complete new boards. The tech who repaired my V-Type said that there was a complete lack of protection in the power amp board, and when one component blue, it took everything out with it!

Might be something completely different on your amp, thats just the experiences that I have had
