1. Hi Guys. Heres some pictures of the guitar and case. As I said the Guitar is a working bass not an ornament so there is some gig wear like swirls in the laquer and a couple of small chips in the binding, but nothing that the camera would pick up. there is a scratch on the underside which did come out in a pic but you couldn't see it if you were playing. the case has a few scratches but thats what its for really.

paste that in and there are 8 reasonable pics

    cheers

  2. Hi, I need to make some space so i'm sellin one of my artcores. It is an AGB140 strung with flats for a super 60s sound.

It is in very good used condition, no damage but a bit of gig wear. I'll try and get some pics if theres any interest. Its at my brothers house as he's recording with it, but it can be done!

Now as anyone who has one of these will tell you - they're great basses but you can't take them out because you can't get a case that fits anywhere and they stick out the top of a gigbag. This one has a proper fitted genuine Ibanez case (TKL) that I got from the States - never seen another in the uk -and even that was a effort!

    Bargain at £250.

    Will post to UK

  3. I owned a 4003 for 12 years as my main player - probably more for the looks than anything else. I sold it because two Ibanez semis
that I paid less than half the cost of the Ric combined (!!), both sounded and played better. No denying that the Ric is a fine instrument and supercool to boot, It's just not worth the money.

Have you thought about trying a Fender Jaguar.

  4. Hi Burrito - it has got a story attached.

The bass was my dad's from new. It was refinished in black in the early 70's as the original red nitro finish was wearing down to the wood, I guess it wasn't a very strong laquer! He replaced it with a Fender Jazz bass in 1976 - which he still plays BTW, but it will be mine someday - Sometime in the late 70s the Hofner was half heartedly stripped down as future project but dissapeared from sight and mind. It turned up a few months back when the loft insulation at my parents house was getting redone. I claimed it and gave it to George Russell, local luthier, and he reckoned it was worth saving and gave me projected cost which was within my means - so he got to work. It is still running the original pickups, but all the other electrics were shot and needed replaced. It still has the original tailpiece too. Replacement parts are repro scratchplate, truss cover and knobs. A set of genuine 1960s tuners and new genuine Hofner bridge
George has re fretted and cleaned up the neck. Added marker dots to the upper neck binding. Refinished the entire guitar with a slightly aged look to match the tarnished original chromework and tobacco stained binding, items that we weren't willing to replace. So it looks like an old guitar in really good order.
Should be getting it this week, the earlier the better - I've a gig in the ABC in Glasgow and I want to give it a whirl then, even just for a couple of songs.

  5. Aye, celestion BL15-250

£60 including UPS postage from www.lean-business.co.uk

Gave it a test tonight, seems pretty good - no appreciable difference in sound, maybe the extra 50w from standard will give it a bit more room - if you know what I mean -

BTW I also checked Ashdown there's VAT on top of that price pushing it to £70

  6.
Arh location Austin,Texas why were these basses not inported? the AGB140 is an excellent bass, such good value for money but the ASB140 is MUCH better looking. One day i will import one/find one for the darkstar treatment. There is one on ebay at the moment but after shipping and tax it's a little expensive :)
I brought one back from holidays once - its my weapon of choice! I have the AGB140 as well

  7.
I know Underwood Road well. I used to walk along there everyday when I was in primary school. If you're ever up in the town during the mornings come into The Wynd Centre (School Wynd) and ask for Hutton. I can offer a cup of coffee and a scone.
Thanks Hutton

  8.
Here's a big welcome from a fellow Buddie! (Buddie = someone from Paisley). I stay in Ralston, it would be too weird if you stayed round the corner. BTW is your sax player Damon Hill?
Hi Hutton - I'm over on Underwood Road - not too far. The Sax players are Tony Finn, He's the guy with all the hair, and Alan Lewis who has nae hair!

  9. In My opinion the AGB 140 is one of the best basses you can get - and not just for the money either.

I have a 51 reissue Pbass so I can compare it with that as the closest reference.

Downsides - or maybe not depending on your playing style !

The Ibanez is MUCH longer, you really need to reach for end of the neck and it is a bit neck heavy as with a lot of
semis. The action is fairly high too. I'm happy with this on all counts, It suits me fine.
There is not much in the way of tonal control - your jag will be coming down with that stuff - vol and tone controls only,
but they work fine and the tone variation is quite noticeable. They're not just as powerful as the Fender. Try and get one with a case, they are outsize and a gigbag is a waste of time - it sticks out the top. Got a case from Thomann for £60

    Upsides

They sound truly excellent. I bought the AGB as a backup to my Rick 4003. I bought the ASB in the states (you cant get them here) a year later on the strength of my experience with the first one and sold the Rick! But as with most thing its a matter of preference on the sound. I play with flats and I'm looking for a 60s vibe, but they're versatile enough for anything.

It is pretty well put together, nice finish and the binding is well done on both my AGB and ASB.
I've been working them pretty hard too, the AGB for 5 years, the ASB for 4 with absolutely no quality control issues, not so much as as a loose nut or crackly pot. Always comes out the case in the same tuning as it went in, and will hold that for a hot gig.

Honestly give it a go - I guarantee you wont get a better instrument for the money

    Check myspace www.myspace.com/thelaynesuk or myspace.com/berrytweedandthechasers

ALL the songs are played on the ASB, just with different tones od played with a pick rather than fingers, - but thats just a matter of preference - it sounds identical to the AGB. There are a couple of youtube vids as well. one of the Berry Tweed ones has a good bass sound on it, its the one about 8 min long.

Theres one on Gumtree Glasgow today for 150 quid - be a devil.

  10. I Use an Ashdown Amp with its own DI out - which is really useful and most sound guys plug it it in without me having to ask. As a result you get to pick your voicing and control on stage volume without upsetting the front of house mix too much.

But then again For The Laynes I usually ask the sound guy to make us sound like the Beatles, but we always end up sounding like the Clash.

  11.
Hey Baxter - welcome. I love that white pickguard on your 51 P-bass. Very cool!
thanks Burrito - It is pearl finish and it is pretty cool!

  12.
hey man! welcome to bass chat! Where abouts in Scotland do you stay!? ... there are some good action pictures in there! :)
Thanks Silky, I stay in Paisley
