1. Hello all,

I'll soon be making the short journey from Leeds over to East Yorkshire, so will be available around there to provide lessons in my specialisms, which are:

-- electric bass, all styles, with particular focus on jazz, big band and pop.

-- theory and aural training as applied to the bass or in the abstract.

-- arranging (especially for big band) and technical help with Sibelius.

    -- accordion?? (not a joke)

I've plenty of experience playing in the jazz and function scene around Leeds and Doncaster, have performed in one of the North's top big bands (based at Leeds University) alongside Liane Carroll, recorded for an ITV drama, and will be going over to perform at North Sea Jazz this year. I've also had the considerable benefit of studying with Geoff Chalmers and Scott Devine in Leeds and have a lot of experience teaching both music and physics as a postgraduate researcher in Leeds. I'm an experienced arranger for big band especially, and used to work for Sibelius.

I'm now looking to build up more of a portfolio as an instrumental/theory tutor as I move to E Yorks. so will be charging very reasonable rates for a while. Hit me up if you fancy a lesson or a chat about any of the stuff above :) .

  2. Chaps,

Here's a couple of preliminary clips from some function band demos I took part in recently. Used a Nordy VJ-4 with TI Jazz Flats, beautiful to play and a nice tone for this sort of music I think. Check it out:

  3. thanks everyone for the varied comments -- only just clocked that this got any replies when I went for a lesson with geoff chalmers and he told me. In case anyone's interested, I didn't end up unison-ing this in the recital in the end, it was a bit too much with piano alto and drums already, but here's a recording from it. pretty tight drummer I think you'll agree:

  4. Hi chaps,

I'm currently working on the stupidly fast intro to Cherokee from Nigel Hitchcock's 'Snakeranch Sessions', as played by Laurence Cottle -- a sax player I know has transcribed it for a recital and would probably be happy to pass along the transcription if anyone wants it. Not sure if I'll ever get it to full speed but here it is at 85%:

And here's a video of the man himself doing it much much faster and better:

  5. EDIT: SOLD

    Hi all,

Looking to sell my fretless as all my gigs are on my fretted Jazz nowadays and money is tight in other areas.

It's a Sandberg Bullet Booster in natural finish. Unlined rosewood finerboard, 3-band active pre with passive mode and delano soapbar. Really lovely tone and with the current TI Jazz Rounds, impossibly low action. Great bass to play.

I'll get some pics available on request as soon as, for now here's a link to a slightly different finish:

    http://www.thomann.de/gb/sandberg_bullet_b...fl_bb_satin.htm

edit: the blurb on thomann says 2-band pre, but it's 3.

    EDIT: SOLD

    Cheers

    John

  6. Evening all,

Some strings I no longer need:

    1) TI Jazz Flats - around a year old, nice and worn in. Cut to fit a 34" scale with 2+2 tuners (e.g. warwick style) but probably won't fit a 4 on one side headstock (fender jazz style).

    2) DR Lo Riders - not gigged, a week or so of practise but long life strings, so quite a lot of slap and pop zing left in these. Cut to the same as above.

I'm asking £10 for each of these sets, delivery in a nice sturdy box will be just a few quid (say £4).

    Cheers

    John

  7.
I guess he's thinking because the 4th of C major is an F natural, which could clash with the F# of the key signature. If he's playing a Cmaj7 chord that's not the case though. I can't see it making a big difference to the tonality just tell him its a passing note if he tries to argue. :)

Remember, theory is descriptive, not prescriptive. Its a way of describing what you're doing, not restricting what you can do. Ultimately, if it sounds good, it is good!
it won't sound very normal, and your friend is right. if you're in e minor (of which the relative major is g) then they key signature has an F sharp as opposed to an F in it. Therefore the the Cmaj7 implies the C lydian mode: C D E Fsharp G A B C.

obviously it's not necessary to always stick to signatures, but it will definitely sound distinctive if you put an f natural in.

EDIT: so you can go 3 4 5, but as you're in the lydian mode, the 4th is sharp as I described above.
