  1. I've got a Yamaha NP11 (which I could be talked into parking with for about a ton, incidentally ;)) which ticks the boxes; not the BEST feeling keyboard I've ever used, but the sounds are good. You'd get a secondhand NP30 or 31 as well, which is the same sounds with a bigger (and slightly nicer-feeling) keyboard

my experience with T shirts is it's hard to make money, you always finish with a load of one size

We did quite well on that front, did a bit of back-of-a-fag-packet maths and ordered a mixture of sizes based on who we thought would buy 'em - go easy on mens' small, about equal amounts of medium and extra-large mens' and small and large womens', and about equal (slightly larger) numbers of mens' large and womens' medium. Worked for a rock band when most of our sales were to larger-proportioned men and medium-sized women, anyway...

Only down the road from me, may drift down - I'm not the world's biggest SD fan, mind, so £20 to get me and the better half in might not fly :( if you fancy blowing the froth off one beforehand though...

  4. For SLIGHTLY more modern (and I don't think anyone else has posted 'em yet, apologies if they have), Foo Fighters' or Feeder's rockier stuff seems to go over well (I've seen cracking audience responses to Monkey Wrench/The Pretender/No Way Back and Buck Rogers/Just A Day). \

From my own personal preference, there's some awesome 90s British rock that never seems to make it into cover bands' setlists - there's probably a reason as it might be a bit obscure, but with a late 20s/early 30s rock crowd slipping in a Wildhearts/Terrorvision/Skunk Anansie/Almighty number might push the right buttons.

Dammit, now I want to start a covers band :P

Yes Paul and I went to school together (still see him 'infrequently' when he pops back ooop North) and I recall seeing various pics and vids of him with various 'Vintage' guitars.

Ossum, small world; I interviewed him a couple of weeks ago, top bloke :)

And yes, it's an Iron Gear Hot Slag pickup, which are great, and worth an extra twenty quid alone; £120 for that's a lot of guitar for bugger-all money B)

Anything with Squier on the headstock (apart from the original JV series).

So easy to get a used version of the 'real thing', why bother with cheap copies.

Bit like Japanese versions of a Harley - never taken very seriously :(

I like Squiers, and my Yamaha Virago ;)

  7. Loves my Macs (mostly), me - I used a Powerbook G4 for live location recording for years and it never once let me down. If you can keep it as 'just' a recording machine (i.e. keep it off the web as much as possible, leave the Airport modem turned off, only install what you actually need for making music) you should find that it doesn't fall down, will run quickly and easily with any peripherals you see fit to connect to it, and has the added bonus of a sh!t-hot built-in audio engine.

You'd get one of the last generation of Firewire-equipped Macs (personally a must to leave your outboard options open) relatively cheaply, max out the RAM and it should do you sterling service for years to come.
