4. Dear all Please take a moment to review the following auction for an Epiphone Thunderbird bass. Its being auctioned for a very good charitable cause.I can vouch for the ebayer as he is a very good friend and work colleague. To explain briefly my friends 9yr old daughter Amy began learning to play guitar and her dad put a video of her playing 'Throw down the sword' by Wishbone Ash on Youtube. The band got to hear of it and as Amy always wanted to find ways to raise money for Cancer Research things began to snowball from there and the band generously offered their support. If you are able please make a bid as you know its for an excellent cause. 5.
Would that be Elworth ? I'm truly amazed to see the word Sandbach mentioned on a Bass Guitar forum! I lived on Congleton Road for a fair while. I'll be going to the Bass day, but I'm not in Cheshire anymore. It would be funny to hear tales of modern day Sandbach, to see if it's changed in any way.
Yeah I know if it got out it could bring property values down I actually live 3mls from Elworth in a village nearby. Just send me a pm if you wanna hookup.
6. Im thinking of booking the day off to go but I will be on my billy.I may not bother unless anybody else is looking for a lift and some company.I live in between Sandbach and Middlewich so I could pickup within a reasonable radius of that area.

8. We have Radio One on all day at work just as background noise really.I usually block out all of the dross but just lately there has been one or two tracks coming through with lovely bass lines.Im talking about Duck Sauce by Armand Van Helden/A Trak & also I lost my heart in Tokyo by mini viva.Just ignore the singing in the 2nd song and have a listen.Duck Sauce is just lovely old skool sounding. Im kinda biased though just cos I love that sort of stuff.
I'm currently taking new students in Chester if thats inside your radius
Hi Oscar and thanks for the response. I live near to Sandbach so Chester is a bit of a trek if I wanted to attend lessons after work during the week ? I work 08.30 to 16.30 5 days a week so I was thinking it would be good if I could get lessons in the evening. If possible I want to avoid my lessons impacting on the families weekends.Having said this I know you have to travel a bit and make exceptions for a good teacher Apologies for putting conditions on this and thanks again for the approach.

Im considering taking a few lessons as a self taught beginner thinking that any nasty habits I may have picked up can be corrected. Can anyone recommend anybody in the Cheshire area ? Many thanks.
11.
There are no downsides to playing a 4 or 5 string bass, but it would be a mistake to keep changing back and forth between a 4 and a 5 while you are trying to acclimatise on the 5! Keep playing and getting better on the 5 and you'll be glad you stuck at it! If I can do it anyone can!
Many thanks I do pickup the 5 each time I go up to my room to practice.I dont own a 4 but my brother has loaned me a cheap 4 string. How long have you been playing ? I watched a guy on Youtube and have been chatting with him.He has been playing for 7yrs and I was really impressed by his standard of play.
12.
Seeing your comments about string spacing and catching the wrong string, I wonder if you've just got a 5-string with a narrow neck. I had the same problem with my first 5, which had the same width at the nut as a 4-string P. Since then I've had a MIM Fender Jazz V and a Spector Rebop 5 and they're both much better. (Or yours might be too wide, depends on you.) So you might want to consider trying other 5s to see if you find one that suits you better.
No I dont think it is a narrow neck I think it is purely my lack of experience and that the strings are closer together than a 4 string. Thanks for the thought and for taking the time to post.
13. Driza bone - Real love Incognito - Colibri Oleta Adams - Get Here Jill Scott - The Way John Meyer trio - Who did you think I was
14. I notice when I get to play with my bro that after a while I really start to loosen up and I get more sort of adventurous and imaginative.Im buzzin after a jam with him.I was told that playing with others is an excellent way to improve your playing but unfortunately I dont get to jam with my brother very often and wondered if there was anybody else in the Cheshire area or a group who get together to play. I am a novice player by the way.
15. I tell you what though I keep watching videos of top players like Mark King & Pino Palladino who all play 4 strings and Im thinking if its good enough for them .....
16.
natural ability doesn't mean you needed to play a 5 string tho lol, stick with it tho man! 5 strings rule! as do 6 strings! andy
Kinda wishing I hadnt written that Andy as reading it back it makes me sound like a complete dick Sorry people.
17. Im not a young guy (43) but I just had to answer the calling.Wish I had carried on learning when I was younger, regrets eh.It had to happen eventually as my dad was a drummer, my mum a singer and my bro used to play bass in several local bands. Anyway I hope I havent made it much more difficult and lengthened the time it will take to get something like half decent.Im thinking it could be about 5 or 6yrs before Im ok. Im just doing this for fun and the pleasure it gives but as I was told by a chap in a music store dont discount getting into a band.He went onto say that bass players and drummers are always sought after whereas guitarists are everywhere. He said that they sell 20 guitars for every bass they sell.
18. Thanks guys very encouraging responses.Tait man that was an epic response thanks.I went for the 5 because my brother reckoned I could handle it because in his opinion I have a natural ability .Thinking about it when I play a 4 its only easier because Im transferring what I have learnt on my 5. I love all music but my preference is for jazz, funk & blues and I must admit that low B is pure sex.Im listening to the John Mayer trio and Jill Scott at the moment and almost weeping with joy at the quality of musicianship. I guess I am just in need of some interaction with fellow bass players.
19. I am a new bass player and recently bought a new 5 string bass 2 or 3mths ago.Im fairly happy with my progress but Im concerned that I have perhaps made the wrong choice.I loaned a 4 string from my brother and I can really feel the difference. The space between the strings is great and I seem to be able to move around the fretboard a lot more easily without catching the wrong string. The missus will cutoff my nads if I suggest changing to a 4 string which will probably cost me money ? So do I stick at it or try to make the change to a 4 ? Many thanks.
20. Hi guys Been playing along on my 5 string for a couple of months now and enjoying it although I think I should have started on a 4 string (another story).Anyway Im more than ready for some kind of amplification but dont know whether to go for something like a VOX headphone amp or go straight for small practice amp.I like making up my own riffs but I would like to play along to something too. What thoughts or advice do you guys have ? Thankyou in advance.

Newbie

Good evening all Newbie here from cheshire.A bit about myself im (ahem) 42yrs old married with 1 child.I took up bass many years ago not seriously though and sadly I gave it up shortly after when I discovered drink and women. Not sure which order though. My music tastes extend all over the place but my first love would have to be soul/funk. So here I am several years on feeling inspired and wanting to take it up again.Im not expecting to get into a band but Im doing this for my own pleasure at the moment.I dont want to think too deeply about this but can I ask the forum there opinion on whether I should go for a 4, 5 or 6 string bass.I dont want to spend anymore than £150 to £200. My brother is a bass player and has just bought a Shine 6 string. He reckons after seeing me tinkering with his 6 string that I could comfortably go for one myself. He himself says that playing a 6 string over a 4 string has been a revelation for him and he wishes he had done it sooner. Thanks for reading and hopefully replying.
