Yeah, I think it was some sort of epoxy and really randomly applied. Not really potted, just haphazardly sploged. That is what caused my luthier friend so much work.

Well, I didn't feel like doing the work, just exchanged this bass for a Squier Precision that I then sold :D

Got to state my vested interest up front, I am selling mine in the Basses for Sale listings. The reason it is dark is that  the pickup is wired in series as standard. I have got more tones out of it by wiring it to have a series/single coil/parallel switch. Single coil and parallel have a brighter top end. The FSR version has a 4 conductor pickup as standard but they just wired it in series for some reason . I had to get a luthier to rewire my pickup to 4 conductor (standard Affinity version). I guess if you give it 500K pots it will make it louder and brighter too.

Yes, the Jag body shape does cause it to neck dive but so do quite a few Jazz style basses (in my experience ). At least the Jag H is quite light.

I would've rewired mine if it wasn't potted in some kind of hard goop (epoxy?)

Indeed they are - I love mine although it's cosmetically pretty rough and doesn't have the original bridge, knobs or tuners.

There's a red one on Ebay at the moment, seems like decent value if anyone is looking for one.

There was a bassist who subbed for me in a big band I’ve been playing with sometime back, he had this bass. It sounded fabulous (granted, this guy could play too)

I just had a rush of blood to the head and bought a Maruszczyk medium scale off eBay, which means I need to sell my Jaguar H. I am going to be listing it pretty soon, just need to get a moment to take the photos and write the blurb. I have had the pickup rewired to give 4 conductors and potted to cut the noise. I wired it up with a 3 way switch to give series/single coil/parallel switching. That gives you two less bassy options than the standard series wiring. Also shielded and Fender high mass bridge.

    Good choice

My Squier Mustang has Fender Flats on it, which are the only flats I use* (that I kept) and also the only time I used fender strings!

I wanted flats for the AGB, as it tends to be the one I play acoustically these days as it is the loudest acoustic.

The chromes were too anaemic, they didn't sound good at all, which is why i thought I would go for the original gauge. It probably isn't a bass I would be gigging much (I took it to a gig, it was so boomy) so not so important.

    * by that I mean, the only bass I use that has flats on!

Yeah, I use Fender Flats on everything when I need flats. They can be cut to shorter scale just fine too - people say it will destroy the flatwound strings but I've done this since 30+ years, never had any problem. I have one of the basses strung with a shortened 9050 ML set since 2005 and these strings will live longer than I will.

On strings I wanted new strings for my AGB 205 as I think they may be the original, and it has to be a decade old. After measuring I realised that although it is short scale, it has so much gap behind the bridge that it uses long scale strings I had some old chromes, thought they would work but the are way smaller than the strings on the original.
looked up the original sizes and they are 55 - 145, so couldn't find flats.

couldn't actually find a t string set either, so got a 4 string set and an individual

You don't have to keep the same sizes, anything will work just fine

  7. In the meantime, my Guild Starfire is 1 year old now. This bass has been perfect so far: great finish, fretwork, electronics, comfort and sound!
can’t think of anything to upgrade, apart from probably its thin plastic volume and tone knobs

Because I want to get more into understanding how it all works and I have half a dozen stripboards sat around.

stripboards make the circuit understanding more difficult most of the time because of the weird routing imposed by the parallel strips.

Now that is a very tasty upgrade, it looks fantastic and I'm sure it sounds great. I really like the individual string bridges and the subtle three position Pup switch neatly mounted between the V & T controls. Well done.

I’m very pleased with the result indeed, it looks much more upscale this way and plays great.

The new gold foil jazz seems to come with a misplaced bridge as standard.

    Is QC taking a hit?

Look at the bridge, the string placement is ridiculous and this is their official marketing photo!!!
