Geezer has mentioned in other interviews he used a Tychobrahe 'wah'.

I'm a bit late here, but I'd say the Sterling range is really aimed at competing with G&L Tribute. Once used Sterlings start filtering through, I'd imagine we'd be talking £300 - £400 for a decent Musicman. I probably will get one.

That's what I was responding to.

What this guy's playing is fairly run of the mill chord melody guitar played on a bass. It doesn't sound (to me) at all like Gypsy Jazz, but that might be because I studied it for a couple of years. It does sound quite a bit like Chet Atkins style fingerpicking. Mind you, Chet was influenced by Django...

It's not a whole lot like anything Django did.

I'd buy Mark Latimour's Sadowsky (check out the for sale section)

Online retailers (or mail order, etc.) are legally obliged to give you a seven day cancellation period on completion of the contract (ie. getting the item) in which you can return the item for a full refund. I can't remember if that's seven working days or just seven days.

Small world... I bought that very same bass. It was an absolute pig at first, but plays great now that I defretted it and swapped out the horrible old flatwounds for rotosounds. I'm thinking about routing it for a Kahler.

For what it's worth, I would be going for something that looked a bit like this:



with four strings, ebony board with no fret markers, black hardware, Nordstrand dual coils with a ramp in between. No idea at the moment about which preamp I'd use.

I pretty much know exactly what I want, but after a great deal of thought, I'm going to sit on the idea for the time being.

I probably could afford to order one a bit of financial juggling, but there's enough doubt to make me want to wait until I'm a little more certain.

I still have difficulties with the idea of 70s Fenders being vintage instruments...

They're old, right enough, but in the 1980s you couldn't shift them... the perception being that they were awful instruments, not just compared to pre-CBS instruments, but also in comparison with new ones.

When did they suddenly get 'good'?

I've come across it, but never had to use it other than in solfege classes (so not in the last 20 years).

The German system was also fun, where Bb becomes B and B becomes H, and sharps and flats got their own names (Cis, Dis, Fis, Es, As, etc). Never needed to use it, just saw it in dual language clarinet study books.

Pick up in person for sure... and only if you really know what to look for.

I don't see any holes for the finger rest or for the pickup and bridge covers.

If I were you, I'd do a saved search, so Ebay emails you when someone puts a kit up for sale.

They stopped installing the springs in the mid 90s due to litigation risks (people were cutting their fingers on the springs).

They can be retrofitted, and EB sold kits for a while, but they're not so easy to get nowadays. They appear on ebay from time to time.
