1.
I work with a vocalist/guitarist. Sometimes he brings an idea for a vocal or guitar part & other times I bring a bassline or a melody & we work on things from there.
I have other instruments to hand, but I tend not to use them much for writing unless I plan on playing it instead of bass or for the occasional melody idea.

The songs formed from basslines are my favourites as they're usually the most melodic & intricate with the vocals often in unison with the bassline (not every case tho).

I'll try & find a decentish recording of something to give an idea of what I mean.
My favourite song to date that I've written was written on my acoustic bass with singing.
It makes me upset listening the recording it tho because when it gets to the bridge my bass is over powered and thats my favourite bassline on the whole album!
+ we never play it live because my guitarist/singer brother is never happy with his harmony. I do all the vocals on the track and he can't sing that high.
Rage haha

The song is called 'Seen Not Heard' and it's on our myspace if you'd like to hear it :)

2. When do you feel you're up for writing songs most?

for example: I write my bass lines intoxicated most of the time and then perfect them from there on out.
and I write lyrics just whenever the words come to my head.

How do you guys like to create?

(PC version haha)

3.
No a friend took my bass last night to take it to the man who does all the technical stuff for us.
He is on holiday so i will pick it up tomorroe night and give it a good inspection. hopefully just be a tweak on truss rod
and all back to normal. Then to fix the singer, it might take more than a little tweak.
Guitar Guitar in glasgow does set ups. Don't know how well, but it's not that far away from you!

4. Apart from sweating sheer alcohol, my a string not being long enough and detuning itself forcing me to change basses

It was an awesome gig

the AWAS boys are absolute gems to work and play with!

Can't wait til next week :)

(My girlfriend broke up with me the night before to explain the semi hungoverness. Still played like a champ tho

There's always space for a BassChatter at a Hostiles gig
So If you can, come and party!

Chris

5. Yeah! It's gunna be tough, but if it comes down to it... Let's just hope it doesn't!

hahahaha :)

You live a bit far away sorry! We try to keep to a 40 mile radius haha. But I'll keep you in mind for future

I actually knew about the sig thing already, but I thought i'd taken it out because I have no idea how to fix it, oops!

6.
Sounded Like they don't have parts.
Are you expecting them to just play the right thing in the right places without a plan? That's tough for hornies to do.
Unlike guitarists and bass players Horn players usually learn to play in ensembles where someone tells them exactly what to play. Sounds like your people need to sit down and work out the notes, runs and harmonies to do, in that song at least.
They had parts and a plan which we rehearsed several times and even just before the show which is why we're annoyed at them! My brother the guitarist and myself write all the songs and the horn parts which we teach them and tell them to play and practice with them. So really they don't have any excuses.

The only band both of the players have ever been in is ours. I think it's a personal issue.

Mr Trombone player has been with us since the start so nearly a decade and his problem is that he's just lazy and doesn't practice, which conflicts with his vain persona. He's always up for playing but he doesn't practice on his own? He should be at home doing scales and stuff but admittedly he doesn't.

The saxophonist (I'm going to try and be nice here because in fact, I despise her but we try to keep the band a democracy and it's a 2/2 vote so theres nothing I can do and I don't want to moan too much) is too big for her boots playing and as a band member! She's only been in the band for little over a year and she too doesn't practice, does unrehearsed stuff a little too often and generally doesn't know her place. Singing and speaking into the mic when she's not meant to and silly things like that.

We've sat both of them down and explained the situation giving them the chance to improve on their attitudes. But I still fear for the worse. In the end, it's really going to come to the point where it's going to be 'you didn't get better, so you have to get out'. Which is sad (in the trombone players case) because he's an old friend (find me a male saxophone player that's good and the girl is out without a second thought on my part). They've had their warnings. We are in the running to tour with some of the biggest bands in our genre in the world! I'll reveal those details when the time is right :) My point being tho, I don't want to go on that stage fearing for my life that the horns are going to ruin everything. I have my own playing and singing to worry about.

A bad horn section is just as noticeable as bad singing and I'm just sick of it!

I say this all not implying that I am perfect all of the time, but knowing that I practice and take the time out because I don't want to suck, and knowing that they don't practice and can and do suck 85% of the time.

As a section they actually make me question how much longer I want to be/am willing to be in the band and in my opinion NOTHING accept maybe taking time out for a child or illness (something on that grand of a scale) should get in the way of doing what I love.

7. Don't know if this works for an iPhone but it does work for an iPod

11. USA ASHDOWN 4x10. 1050w @ 4ohm. Tweeter. 2 x Speakon and 1/4 jack inputs. Doesn't have a metal grille which is a downfall but at the same time it looks stunning, beautiful sound, and it's lightweight. £499.99 I've had mine for about 2 months and I love it!

12.
Also,to add some possible controversy..... Lower tuning does not make the music heavy.
Some of the heaviest music ever has been played in standard tunings.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it did! A good majority of bands in my genre (Ska/Punk/Hardcore/Metaliska) are a prime example that you don't. I just meant that there is a certain sound you get only when you have the looseness of a detuned allot of kids go for that these days.

Chris

13. The easiness of a 5th chord is a total technicality! A technicality that only works if you assume the vast majority of guitarist actually know their theory. I play a 5 string bass so I have the use of a low B without detuning. You'd need a seven string guitar to make a low d without detuning. How many kids have you met at the ages of between 13 and 21 had 7 string guitars? Any of the kids I've ever met use drop D tuning use it so can get the low notes and make a nice rink gink gink gink sound haha. If anything it's a 60/40 split with the majority vote for making heavier sounding music

The debate is on... We might need a thread :)

14. Our first ever wedding next month

Check the set:

Streetlight manifesto - keesbey nights
reel big fish - Beer
less than jake - all my best friends.....
goldfinger - superman
madness - one step beyond
jesse james - shoes
the specials - little bitch
spunge - kickin pigeons

Check the lyrics to 'Shoes' hehe... I'm still stumped as why you'd want that played at your wedding tho

I'm looking forward to playing. Hopefully we'll get some more Ska/Punk rocker weddings to do out of it if we play well!

15.
Drop D is purely there for lazy guitarists to play riffs with one finger
+1 on that statement being a total farce lol

16.
Man I LOVE Hi Standard. Nice to find more fat wreck punk fans!

Are you going to Groezrock?
A HI STANDARD FAN! I think a miracle just happened somewhere! I too love those crazy japs. I was sad to hear when they split :)

I didn't actually know this festival existed! I'm paying for a new bass and all sorts of other stuff at the moment so nahh
But hearing that the Bosstones are playing kind of makes me want to drop everything and escape to belgium haha.
You goin'?
