  1. Hoping someone can help, I replaced the neutrik jack plug on my ibanez btb recently. Being lazy, I took a wire off at a time and replaced it on the new one without checking... guessing they changed the pin layout 🤣, the bass works but is constantly live so the batteries drain. I have a feeling I have the ground and the tip the wrong way round.

Can anyone confirm if it would still make noise if this was the case?

Also, if anyone has a wiring diagram for an ibanez btb 1205e with the bartolini pickups and preamp at all they could share I'd really appreciate it!

Being pedantic, I seem to recall the bass in SYL being tuned down like the guitars - so, the E is tuned down to the C, then the B is dropped to some unearthly frequency.

There are some songs on Alien where you can make out the subsonic rumblings.

This is similar to how I tuned my 5 string when I was touring with a metal band... we were a semi tone lower, my E string was a B and the B string became an F# (F#, B, F#, B, E). When I used the lowest string below 5th fret I usually doubled up with the octave above so the note had a bit of clarity whilst also causing the crowd to empty their bowels.

I can’t decide what I like most about that horror. Is it the extra peg aimlessly plonked on the top of the headstock in such a similar shade to the other pegs that you’d never know it was added or the practically invisible neck shim?

I personally love the random hole in the middle of the headstock, the bridge is also a masterpiece of engineering!

  4. So I contacted the seller on this one and asked for more details, apparently it shows it has power and the fan kicks in. It did sell on ebay but I then got another message from them... Apparently they gave the money back to the winning bidder (£25 and not me) as they wanted to get more than £50 for it... I offered them £15 😆 working examples are selling for around £60 so no way this is worth anywhere near that not working!

IME there are just two ways to ensure that you have as little messing about to should you need to change basses mid-way through the set and not be wanting a different sound.

    1. Have two identical basses, or at least two basses with the same pickups (in the same places) and electronics.

    2. Use so much signal processing down-stream, that the contribution the bass itself makes to the sound is negligible.

Completely agree, it isn't a difference in sound that I'm concerned about, more the versatility and ease of dialling in a sound I want from the jazz and changing that sound quickly and easily as needed. The band I play in plays things from 50's rock and roll, some jazz and then modern pop so versatility of tone is key! The Jazz is not going to sound like the BTB, but I don't want it to, if I want the BTB tone, i'll use that :D! If I can get the output levels similar and then have the versatility to change the tone more without having to resort to pedals, or changing amp settings (usually very flat, let the bass do the talking) then it would be perfect!

IMO I put a Bartolini pickup in a Precision bass and the improvement was 1000%. Spurred on by this great move I added a preamp and got 5% improvement at most. For what that cost It wasn't worth it.

My take on modding is that some things are worth it and many are not. I'd replace the pickups with a good make like Barts or Nordstrands etc, and maybe add a good set of flats and see where you are at that point.

The main thing I like about J Retros is that it gives you versatility - you can get any sound out of a Jazz Bass with it installed.

But it also means, if you are using a FOH PA, you can alter your sound before it gets to the desk. I usually add a lot of low mid to ensure that I keep definition when going into a random mixing desk and through the PA.

It's also really easy to fit as there's no soldering involved.

So a thumbs up from me.

    Edit: I have two

Thank you both, it's interesting to see both sides of the argument! As @gjones says, it adds a lot of versatility with the Jazz and I think that's the main thing I miss when I switch from my BTB, I go from having 3 band EQ with mid sweep on hand to a treble pot and pickup volumes on the Jazz. Definitely less versatile! @chris_b I may play the waiting game until a second hand one comes up nearby and also look at changing the pickups over to a decent set or Barts/Nordstrand with the funds I have put by!

  7. I'm debating getting a John East J Retro pre amp for my Mexican Jazz bass... I mainly play a 5 String Ibanez BTB (one of the old "prestige" models with Barts and 3 band EQ) which has a super modern tone but also very high output. I'm looking at making it simpler to switch to the jazz bass if I need to (string snapped, dead battery any other live quirk) without issue. Are they worth it? I'd love to know what everyone thinks!

    But do your trousers flap?

Not withstanding the fact that the last time wore trousers with enough surplus material to move in the wind was some time in the 70s; even when I was playing rock covers or in a psychobilly punk band with a 1kW rig I have never needed so much on-stage volume that I could feel the air move.

I'm trying to bring the 70's look back and the rest of the band love carrying 2 8x10s in to every gig ;)! Flares are cool right, if you buy them thin enough they flap around quite a lot?!

Used TE gear appears to be cheap as chips. Ridiculous really.

That is the problem tbh, I'm trying to sell an Ashdown 410 for pretty much whatever I can get for it... nobody seems to want something that size at the moment!

Will there be a renaissance one day soon and everyone will switch back to heavy gear? Personally whilst the amp sims etc are great... I still prefer the trouser flapping of a proper amp.

Could be a fun project to fix this Trace Elliott though, not a good financial decision but could be interesting haha

Yamaha are smart. They know that the B string is just a thumb rest and the G string isn't really a “bass” string, with frequencies only audible by dogs and small mammals like lead guitarists.

Pain in the arse though if you want to change it to literally anything else!

Terrible photos plus the description says 'it's been repaired' with zero detail of what that actually means. Personally, I'd swerve it.

Probably not a bad decision especially as the reserve is likely to be close to the buy it now price!

One oddity that has always bugged me on mine... why are the pickups for this 5 string version the size of a 4 string set! They barely extend either side of the B and G stings!
