  1. Peavey alpha bass head. Made in USA. Rare valve head from the 90's. 180w of goodness, in working order but carries the scars of a full life. Comes in carry flight case. Sounds amazing. I can't believe these are not more widely known about. Loads of depth and dirt if you want it. Equally has great top end for those pop punk pick sounds. Bought from a fellow BC member. Collection only for this one really but happy for you to arrange a courier at own risk etc. Open to reasonable offers.

  2. Curious about the construction of these cabs i.e. Is it separately chambered for each 15 or combined for both? Suppose I'm really asking if it has a deeper sound than two separate trace 1153's? Also be interested in any thoughts from those that have owned? Thanks

fwiw I’ve had four of them and just sold one to help out someone after their first USA MusicMan. Upshot is he loves it and I’m Sterling-less again. Great basses, can’t speak about playing with a pick so much but really rated it for finger style. The USA Sterling has the signature MM tone but with a little bit of extra grind and a couple of extra options via the three way switch.

It’s your left hand that gets all the love though. The neck shape and feel is fantastic imo. I’ve yet to play a better neck

Most helpful Keir! Thanks for the links also!

  4. Any EB Musicman Sterling 4H users out there want to tell me about the qualities and dislikes for this bass for fingered and pick usage? Currently have a EB Musicmsn Sub and thinking about a move etc

    Sorry....

I have high jacked this thread.

    Very sorry again.

Not at all I've followed with interest as I too had spotted that amp and was seriously tempted at the price! I hope you get a satisfactory resolution.

Depends, you have a high and low input. on the high input you can barely get the preamp to overdrive at all. In the low input you can, but in normal use it just basically makes the sound thicker.

Obviously it is just 100 watts, so you can get the power amp to overdrive pretty easily.

I love the sound, I just don't like the weight and TBH, I have got an ABM600 now which makes a lovely sound with a bit more volume.

That's good the hear regards drive, weight to be expected I suppose! ABM heads do seem to be an absolute bargain at the moment! I'm certainly not ruling out hybrids, but drawn to all valve just because :)

Not my experience at all. I'd say for rock/indie you won't go far wrong. It depends on your cabs, of course, but I felt the sound was beautifully fat and thick, and at volume whilst it would tip over the edge it was controllable. Perhaps depends how loud your band is too but I was playing with a very hard hitting drummer with my CTM100 and it was lovely and creamy and thick.

That sounds absolutely perfect for my needs. Looks great too. I'll have check one out. Thanks for the response!

I have one I would sell but there is no way I am posting it, so I hadn't bothered putting an ad up!

How do you find it? I'm imagining alot of middle clack and more preamp overdrive than you could use at volume?

    Selmer treble and bass 100.

    Hiwatt or Mywatt

    Simms Watt AP 100

    Marshall Superbass 100

    The list goes on.

Any views on the above? Particularly interested in hearing about a superbass if you played one?

I have a quite lovely Burman Powerpak 100 with separate mixer that has yet to see any serious action... I wait with baited breath...

Did Burman ever do a dedicated bass amp head? I might be getting confused but didn't Burman share similarities with old Laney amps? Once recorded through a Laney VA50 amp into a sealed 15 and was hands down best bass sound I've ever got!

Had a Selmer Treble n Bass 50, a few years ago, sounded great but broke up at (relatively) low volume. Better for guitar for sure.

Now gone to Ampeg 300W monster.

Always fancied the Marshall 400 VBA

Handbox seem to tick a lot of boxes, but they 'aint cheap.

For modern, The Laney Nexus Tube could be a real bargain second hand.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on the Selmer. Prices seem ok but you've confirmed my fear regarding usable volume! Thanks for commenting!

  12. Interested in recommendations for reasonably priced secondhand valve bass heads. Previously owned the Ampeg and Soundcity 100/120 offerings and enjoyed them greatly, but looking to try something new. Thinking Selmer, Trace Twin, Fender Bassman, Ashdown CTM, Hiwatt, Marshall perhaps etc. I generally play pick, simple root note stuff through fender or musicman type basses. Like just a touch of drive to thicken things up, certainly not looking for loads of overdrive however. Reliability and modern features a bonus. Somthing to be heard in an indie band. Any views from those that have? Thanks

USA fender Highway One body secondhand- 120

Seymout Duncan Rickenbacker pick ups - under 100 (cant remember exact price!)

    Schaller 3D bridge - about 50

    Hipshot tuners about 40

Stellartone tonestyler duo 6 plate - under 100

Thats a status P neck, but its off now and i may pop a Maple with black blocks or get a status Jazz - decent neck £1-300

Routing and body work - free coz i did it!

It’s the nuts and i really need to pop a neck on it again - you can do real quality very reasonable

This was an early run of the CV’s great value if you can find one at a good price. I’ve seen lots of the P’s selling above the original price. I guess they were that good?

I think probably the one I particularly loved was considered not a great era for squire, being Korean made, I think. I thought it sounded great however. Got to say I've played a few of the recent squires and I've been seriously impressed!

I have a CV Squier I bought locally for £120. Already a good bass. Added the split 51 pick ups and it’s a great bass! Refin’d it myself with a cab if £14 sherwood green paint. All in it was under £400 and it’s a solid go to bass for me. I look at ‘better on paper’ jazz basses but ultimately I know my limitations as a player and few folk would tell the difference in my jazz and a ‘real’ fender or other brand.

Cool looking bass that! I've had many a squire. Great basses. Particularly loved an early year precision I had for my first bass. Late eighties or early nineties made. Kept going back to it over much more expensive fenders for gigs!

Hoppus used a jazz body with a p pick up  (as I’m sure you know) The other option is nab a cheapie jazz fill the bridge route, refin and add a neck pick up to suit.

You know that just didn't occur to me?!! It's a tempting option that. Self build I'm probably looking at £5-600 min if going with a fender neck and half decent pickups
