  1. The Carlo Robelli looks nice enough if you can find one in the UK. shipping & import costs will push the price up considerably, and if it's got any woods that are covered by the CITES regulations that will add moe expense again.

    Same here. 52 & retired on health grounds.
    I haven't got much money but I'd much rather be skint & happy than doing a job I hate.

They usually book a time slot with the organiser and perform two or three numbers. It's an opportunity for the budding solo singer songwriter to air their works to an audience.     Jam Sessions are run by an Organiser and his House Band. This could be an established band or a group of musician friends. They provide the PA, drums and back-line and in most cases get paid by the pub. Usually the designated singer will suggest the numbers and a short discussion ensues. Who knows it, what are the chords, etc. it's all very light-hearted and off we go. If you are a regular then you get to know the other musicians and their favourite numbers. Often you get to play something that you might have heard but have never actually played. It makes you think on your feet, watch the others and most importantly listen. If you get hit with a number that you'd like to play better next time then go home and learn it. There are musicians of all levels and one must be tolerant of the novices. We all had to start somewhere but it does get a bit frustrating if they don't know what a 12-bar is, or they try to slap a Blues. There are also those magic moments when the grouping clicks and it all comes together to the great appreciation of the audience.

    This is how I'd describe them too. Open mics tend to be for solo performers (or duos or whatever, but not a full band as such) and more often than not original songs are played rather than covers.

    Jam nights/sessions, in my experience, tend to be little more than a bunch of musos playing blues and rock covers. I've done a few over the years & always found them incredibly tedious from a bass playing perspective, but then I'm really not a fan of blues stuff.

    I wish I could say that the music was as entertaining as the titles but unfortunately it's just pretty standard early/mid 70s self satisfied hippy pish.

    I'm the same.
    I started playing solo guitar stuff so I wouldn't have to bother with a band & then I started getting hassled by people at open mics to let me play with them.
    Can't bloody win. :D

  6. How can it be "in unmarked condition with light player wear"? It's either unmarked or it has light player wear, it can't be both.

    If it was carbon fibre or finished in a nice bright colour or something I think it would look pretty good. What I never understand is when luthiers make something unconventional/modern looking & then build it with woods that makes it look like a Victorian roll top desk.

  7. I paid £200 each for my secondhand Rickenbacker 4001's in 1980/81, one of them was a checkerbound/horseshoe/toaster pickup model. In the mid 80s I nearly bought a mint condition used Wal twin neck with case in a music shop in Birmingham for £399.
    That's what the prices were back then, comparing them to what the same things sell for now is just masochistic.
