If you play cover songs with specific bass lines, do you think the majority of the audience would notice or care if you just root-noted everything?

It's my first gig back.

Nearly Dan make their debut gig at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth on February 7. Doors 7.30pm.

I expect a fair few of you have heard of this player. For those that haven't, I recommend you check him out. He's rarely mentioned in lists of top players, but he is a serious virtuoso. If you think you've seen every technique, then you might be surprised. He's also a monster groover. Search him on YouTube and you'll see lots of performances, plus a breakdown of his technique.

I can't seem to embed this on here from my laptop. If you search ZUM F.U.N.K on Youtube (not the remix), there's a track I recorded with a band in the early 90s. I came up with the bass part, which was played on a Tobias Classic 5 straight into the desk. The brass parts are from an album George Clinton released, allowing people to use his samples for free.

They do an amazing version of 'Stayin' Alive'.

I'm not sure if this band has been mentioned before, but for anyone who likes their music and bass funky, you should seriously check out this band. Loads of stuff on YouTube.

I've had some personal problems lately. Because of these, I've been told to have a break from Nearly Dan. I'm gutted, of course. If anyone is thinking of going to see the band from now until January/February, I won't be on the gig. I'm not sure if I'll get the gig back, even though the band was originally my idea. 17 years and I've never missed a gig.

Apologies, but this gig has been cancelled due to our singer having a throat infection. Rescheduled to January 2015.
