1. Damb it I hit the delete button by mistake DOH!

    this is what I wrote:

Please dont take this the wrong was as I really love the Low End bass and have been after one for ages, but everyone seems to say the bass is fantastic and its well made etc, but it seems to have been through 4 owners since september.

Why do people not like it and keep moving it on? As I said I am not trying to make out there is a fault with it or imply anything dodgy is going on, I am just curious as to why people did not get on with it? is it just not the right neck profile or is the sound not all that? Just curious! My Roscoe beck had been around the forum for a while and passed through a few hands but I love it to bits and its perfect condition wise, just was not right for a few other folk, mostly the sound and neck profile I seem to remember.

As I said pure curiosity, In fact I am tempted to try and sell the roscoe for this bass as I really want something active and it is stunning with those blocks.

I do wish you the best of luck with the sale.

Edit: I did see your reason which is cool, it took me two attempts at five string to finally love it, it really is not for everyone and I would love an old 70s Jazz

  2. So wish I had the money and/or a 4 string to trade, these things look and sound fantastic and I know this is a bargain price as I have been GAS-ing over these for a while now. Check out youtube for videos of some Lowend players demonstrating their abilities. Anyone who gets their hands on this will be getting a lot of bass.

Good luck, just wish I could take it off your hands.

  3.
Hi

My band need to get together this week to rehearse and for the first time in years we don't have our rehearsal space available. Does anyone know of somewhere we could try maybe for Wednesday this week.

Contact number and name much appreciated by PM.

    Newport/Cardiff/Pontypridd would be ideal.

    Cheers

    Hello,

This is the place my band use in cardiff, tidy enough and they are improving it all the time, Its used by some big welsh rock bands but they charge £10 an hour at the weekends (may be cheaper mid week) and there is a discount after 3 hours. Great rooms with good PA and free kit and amp hire so no need to lug your cabs if you dont want to but i always take my head.

  4. +4

I have a thread on here"I bought a new bass...." I have just taken delivery of one of these and it is simply brilliant! I cannot sing its praises enough. Great bass great neck well assembled but could do with a new bridge and machine heads if you picky like I am.

The neck is wide with full 19mm spacing but it is comfortable to play and the neck is flay but wide. I would seriously recommend trying one. It may also be worth visiting talkbass, there is a huge thread there about them and loads of people singing their praises!

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know, I can talk all day about this bass.

  5. I have to say I was originally all up for black everything but then had the same thought as Ped.....would it be tooooo Black? After looking at the talkbass forum one again though I think Black will be the way to go, and yes i will be looking for a black switch, in fact you get a free black swith with the aguilar pre I have been looking at......

I will be ordering the new parts as soon as possible, the bass is great in every way but the tiny tiny issue I have is that it does neck dive a tiny bit so some black hipshot lights are the solution.

Thanks for all the comments, some more playing this evening has confimed how great this bass is and the EQ is nowhere near as bad as some on TB have made out, in fact i was all up for changing it but i am not going to bother. I have to say I do fancy some Nordstrand big singles or fat stacks but that is way off, hardware is whats needed.

Black it is then! watch this space, I will do another "build/mod" thread like I did with my warwick as soon as i get my hands on the bass.

  6.
Sexy :^0 ...is that an ebony board?
No its "ebanol" I dont know what that is but it has a very nice feel to it and it adds to the look because it is very black!

(quick google) its phenolic, so plastic to cut away the rubbish but it feels good and very snappy sounding great slap ton eon this thing.

  7.
That is very sexy (probably the sexiest Squire I’ve seen in a long time), and you’ve not got long to wait till you're allowed to play it  I'd sneak a couple of cheeky minutes here and there when the missus wasn't looking though
I was not too worried when the missus said I wasnt allowed to play because I thought " how can she stop me, its in the house" yup she outsmarted me! she is giving it to my Dad who is visiting, to take back to Wales with him until we both go back there for Christmas. NOT FAIR :) there is no icon for stroppy!!

Squier really have upped their game a lot in the past year or so, I hope Fender are watching, Imagine If they made a MIM or MIJ special like this, they would have their hands bitten of up to the elbows!

Anyway some pictures in the mod thread as soon as possible it does need some hipshot upgrades.....STAY CHROME or GO BLACK WITH THE HARDWARE.....I CANT DECIDE!!!!

  8. Well its not groundbreaking and its not a £5000 custom fodera or anything like that but I am happy.

I bought a Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V from a fellow "chatter" who was extremely kind and delivered it to Cheltenham all the way from Wigan.

For those not in the know its this bass:

I have to say i have had it for 30 minutes and its absolutely cracking. I cannot believe more people do not own these it is simply brilliant! I have been reading some write ups on talkbass from our cousins across the pond and thought they were over dooing it a bit, but it is seriously good. The hardware as expected is not all that but a few quid will sort that out. The neck and the frets are brilliant and the profile feels just like my Roscoe Beck V but without the slight thinning towards the treble side of the neck. Its flat and quick and I love the spacing.

So anyway its my christmas present from the missus and I am not allowed to play with it til christmas but in the meantime I am planning the "mods"

What does everyone think, new chrome hardware, or go black across the board?

here is one from talkbass which has gone all black:

  9. Hello, I have a book by Stuart Clayton which is fantastic, its not preachy its friendly to read and is to the point and helpful. I think its called "100 tips for bass guitar you should have"

I found it great for the basics and some good hand excercises, Massive thumbs up from me.

  10. MINE! thanks to my lovely girlfriend, hope I dont have an argument before I get it.

Just a quick one as i noticed you were after a Squier VMJ. There is one on the board for sale link: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31657

Its in Cheltenham and comes ready to rock with a Badass bridge. Just thought I would mention it as you were heading down this way.

Thanks again and see you tomorrow, will have the kettle on.

  11.
Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones, IMO best value for money at that price. Going in a slightly different direction tone wise, I think the Marcus Miller jazz is right up there too.
How could we forget that, the Marcus is a stonking piece of kit, really great bass and lovely sound. They also go for a very good price on ebay etc. Well worth a look and they outplay basses double the price.

  12.
+1 on the Sandbergs. But if i was spendng that sort of money on a Jazz I would be on the phone to Jon Shuker about one of his stock J types here:

    http://www.shukerbass.co.uk/
Hey, I tak eit the GB did not blow you away in the end?

I agree with what most have said above, and I must say that Mr Shuker has some awesome looking Jazz basses for sale and they are less than you are looking to spend. I just had a look in the for sale and would suggest any of the following:

Lakland DJ4 £700, couple this with and East preamp, or stay passive if thats your thing, either way a stonking bass and it looks great and they certainly do growl.

Fender Roscoe Beck 4 £700, AWESOME bass, I have a five string and it is extremely well built and has massive flexibility in sound, and mine certainly growls like a jazz. i can not reccomend these enough, well if its good enough for Roscoe Beck.....

Also it may not growl but if you liked teh GB there is a standard (pretty much a spitfire I think) on the forum for just under 1K.

The lakland JO is a great bass too and I slightly preferred it to the DJ, but that was just neck and body shape, nothing else. My experience of Sandberg is very positive as well, but definately check out the shuker site.

  13.
The GB shots of that bass. Snakewood fingerboard by the looks of things... talking really exotic wood on that particular spitifire then...
Yeah it has a snakewood fingerboard and the top is just beautiful, it really is a very special instrument. The owner is only selling because he has a cluster of vintage fenders and musicman as well I believe. Got to say I would choose this over any fender any day of the week, but thats just me.

  14. Hey,

Cool you will have a fun afternoon with this bad boy. When I tried it it needed a clean and some new string but it was still awesome! They have Eden amps in stock now so you will get a brilliant idea of how it sounds.

I personally thought that £1700 was a weenie bit high but I don't know a huge amount about New GB prices. I would say £1500 or somewhere close would be a great price. Don't get me wrong though I still think it is worth the money, and you will not be thinking I got ripped off if you buy at this price. It is simply fantastic, but maybe if you threw some cash their way they could do you a deal and get the numbers down.

Good luck and i hope you like it. let us all know how you get on.

    Cheers,

    Nathan

  15. Hello,

looking at your location I am going to make a pretty big guess and say that it it is the spitfire for sale in Aroundabout sound in Cheltenham.

If this is the bass in question it is mind blowing. I was so near to buying this bass and the only thing that stopped me was the fact that I really wanted a 5er.

It is apparently a rare beast and Bernie apparently made 2-3 with the same piece of wood (not exactly the same piece) for a show of some kind. 2 were sold and this one was left. I think that was the story behind it.

It is very punchy and very clean and harmonics just ring out on this thing. I was in the shop for at leats an hour playing it. I would say it doesnt growl like a standard Jazz, but it has so much more. I have played a lot of high end basses and this just puts everything else to shame in terms of build quality and sound. It is smooth responsive and the EQ is very powerful. You would never have a problem cutting through with this.

All this is of course if we are talking about the same bass. This is the one in cheltenham:

EDIT: just read previous thread properly it is this bass. IT IS FABULOUS and they will most liekly do you a deal they are by far the best guitar shop I have ever been to.

  16. i would say go for a Squier VMJ but seriously look into the Classic Vibe, in my opinion it is a better feeling bass and I nearly bought it on the spot when I picked it up. I have not had a feeling of joy like that since I picked up my Roscoe Beck V for the first time. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of a string!

  17.
I understand, as far as Western conceptions allow, what he was going for but poor execution is poor excution regardless of cultural heritage.

This kind of world fusion is much more up my street; metal and traditional Japaneese instrumentation together at last. :)

Interesting to see everyones views, but not a patch on these guys INHO, I loved the playing in this thread, well spotted, loved it!

  18. I apologize if this has been posted before but check out this video, I think it has to be the worst bass video I have ever seen. Excuse me if this is supposed to be clever but this just looks like Fodera abuse, should we report him?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ThpNwJtIyE...feature=related

See what you guys and gals think.
