Never thought about black on it, off to google to find an example.

I have a Pearl white which I always pair with a black pickup cover when I fancy a change.

This is my 2000 Stingray, I have had this about 6 years now. I have mixed feelings about this bass, it plays so well and just feels so comfortable, but I have never been thrilled by the colour. I just can’t seem to bring myself to sell or trade it for fear of not getting another quite so good.

That looks amazing! Where do you source your necks and bodies from? (That’s a weird question in any other context). Do you buy them finished or do you do them yourself?

I really fancy building my own bass.

Yeah I agree, their prices seem to have rocketed recently, and seem a bit ridiculous for what is still essentially a basic mass produced instrument.

I love my Stingray, I got it 6 years ago for a very good price, but I could barely afford a secondhand one these days.

The new BFR bass has been announced and it’s a full blown replica of a 76 Stingray. Too rich for me at £4200 but looks nice.

I watched this interview last night. I like Rick a lot and Robert DeLeo was a huge influence when I was younger.

He comes across as such a nice guy and a very capable guitarist and songwriter as well. I loved hearing some of those Stone Temple Pilots songs again.

Thanks for the feedback, if I decided to order something, it would likely only be a 1x12 or 2x10 if they were happy to make it. 
 

I am not overly bothered by weight as I don’t gig much and it would be more to have a nice cab at home. My main betters was sound quality as they really don’t seem overly popular with us bass players.

A very good friend of mine has just ordered a custom cab from Zilla and is blown away with the customer service and quality.

I know they make cabs but I have seen very few of them and even less mention of them on here. Does anyone own one or have any experience?

I really fancy having them make me something custom and a bit nicer than the usual carpet covering.

I have been keeping my eyes out for an early Stingray for a gift to myself for my 40th. Can’t believe there are two white 83 Stingrays on basschat, and I have never come across one for sale. Must look harder! 😄

I have had 3 Stingrays over the years and my current one for 6 years. I think I adjusted it once after it had been in the case for over a year but that’s it.

In relation to the figured wood discussion, I seem to remember an interview with Roger Sadowsky where he said he wouldn’t use it in his basses because of its instability and inconsistency. I think he only started using figured necks when the whole roasted revolution started.

I don’t have any direct experience as all the maple fretboards I have had, have been finished.

I have heard people use wet wipes, Ernie Ball wonder wipes, Murphy’s Oil Soap (I think Ernie Ball recommend that as well).

I have seen steel wool work well or even super fine sandpaper to get the worst out as well.

There were a few songs decent songs, but it’s hard to follow up in the meantime. I always like ‘space is the place’ and ‘carry on’.

I honestly don’t know if it’s heavy, I don’t think it’s any heavier than my Stingray, but I have never weighed that either 😆.

I will try and pop it on the scales, because I have been looking at a new bass and thought it was heavy, but it might actually be less than my two.

I got given one by a friend of mine who was upgrading and didn’t have the space for it, and I have to say it’s an incredibly solid bass.

There were two small issues with mine, the pickups were wonky and rattled around, and there was terrible buzz/hum from the pickups. Easily sorted for about £15 and some time, I put a load of conductive copper tape in the cavity and shielded it to the best of my abilities, and I put new foam and springs underneath the pickups.

I have a 2001 USA Stingray but have been taking the HB to the last few practices and it sounds bloody great and plays well after a minor set up.

I’m tempted by the new roasted necked ones they have just released.

Personally I would be looking to replace him, life is too short to put up with rude unhelpful and unwilling people.

If you find a half decent vocalist you should be up and running after a couple of rehearsals if you give them a detailed list of what needs to be sung. Even more so if you allow them a music stand, it’s not like you are asking them to remember a long set of lyrics.

I went to my first rehearsal in ages last night, and I was asked to try some new songs which I had never sung before and wasn’t familiar with. 2 listens to the songs while everyone had a loo break and I was pretty much able to get through them problem free with lyrics on my phone.

My point is that you can achieve a lot with a positive attitude and some willing, so try and find someone like that.

I’ve used these guys a few times, great cables, loads of options for colour and types of jacks. I had a bright red cable made with a silent Jack that I have been using for years.

Just think of slightly outdated, tired, overplayed songs that people call ‘classics’, that you loathe the thought of having to play to other human beings. That will make up the majority of any function band set.

Can you tell I how much I have loved playing in function bands over the past 20 years.

Watched a couple of sets last night and still need to check out some of the headliners.

TLC had a slick band but there was something weird going on with the vocals that was distracting me, maybe a vocal effect or something on the backing track? 
 

Skunk Anansie are always worth a look, there’s a few songs of theirs I will always love as they drag out memories of being a teenager. Pretty good, wasn’t blown away.

Watched a few other bits I can’t recall but highlight for me so far was Sigrid. Her band were superb, her bass player was great, some nice lines and flicking back and forth between synth and great vocalist on top.

Guitarist held it down nicely and let rip on a couple of occasions in a classy way. I just love Sigrid, she writes some great catchy song, great singer, and huge energy.

I will check some more out today and this evening. Really want to check out Olivia Rodrigo and Jessie Ware.

I played one of these in Andertons a few years back as I was drawn to the amazing colour, as you say there’s almost a burnt orange tint in there, lovely colour.

I played a lot of fenders that day, including a very expensive Adam Clayton signature, and this was the star of the day. Great build, lovely neck, light and just a joy to play as it was set up well out of the box.

I still need to buy one at some point.

I think I am more critical of the people with all the expensive kit these days. That’s no better though because I shouldn’t judge people on how much they spend on something they love.

I felt my most liberated as a player when I had a Squier 5 sting Precision. Didn’t give a monkeys if it fell over or got a ding, got compliments about its looks and sound and I just enjoyed it.

Thinking about it now I am smiling so definitely got more than 10 seconds. He deserved it (he was not a pleasant fellow) but I hate being the ‘my kit costs this much’ Guy.
