1.
Hi guys,

I'd really like to start recording some bass covers for youtube, but unsure as to how to do it.

I'm thinking of getting a Korg Pandora PX5D - which is quite pricy (£150) but has had great reviews, sounds great in demos and has a USB line out connection, so I'm tempted.

Any other cheaper or alternative options?

    Thanks,

    Carl
I started out just playing live over the tracks and videoing it.... very cheap!

  2. My good friend in Germany, Mr. Oliver Baauman, is selling his Alembic Dragon Wing - this is truly a one off bass guitar and would add pure class to any collection.
Oliver is the bass guitarist in 'Who Are You' in Germany and while the bass has been gigged, it is in immaculate condition.

He has asked me to post it on here to see if there is any interest. He is asking an incredibly reasonable £4500 + PnP and insurance from Germany - no tax to pay on this one! Oliver would also consider trades + cash from a potential buyer.

Retail for this orginally was £8000 - goodness knows what it would cost now!

This link takes you to the Alembic Forum where pics and description can be found:

Any questions or offers etc etc can be directed to Oliver:

    Thanks for looking.

thats why its cabaret.flogging a dead horse in my opinion.
2006 with a new album on the way.... quite the norm for groups nowadays.

  4.
Mark Knopfler toured and recorded as Dire Straits with only 2 of the originals and no one bothered to complain, Tower of Power toured for years without Francis Rocco Prestia, Pink Floyd have been as just good for more than 25 years without Roger Waters, Genesis survived the loss of Peter Gabriel, Queen are out there successfully gigging without Freddie, the Blockheads don't have Ian Dury and Little Feat don't have Lowell George so why should The Who need anyone other than their singer and songwriter? All these guys are out there making good live music. Thank God for that!

What an irritating thread this is turning into!!!!
Amen to that!

The Who are my favourite band and I've seen them countless times. It is amazing how, by watching one stage managed show on TV, (which was by no means indicitive of a typical Who concert) many have an opinion on why they should stop.

Age has nothing to do with it AT ALL. The Who are about fire, passion, belief and power - something they still possess in spades. When Townshend hits that guitar after nearly 50 years of playing and his fingernails fly off - it means he has passion and belief and that he gives everything to the audience and to his performance. Likewise Roger. Christ, Who songs have to be amongst the most difficult to sing EVER and he still does it, wants to do it and gives everything. At the IndigO2 concerts a year or so ago I witnessed grown men weeping during 'Tea and Theatre' - such was the power and emotion Roger put into that song.

In the days of sh*te Factor and manufactured pop and rock, The Who are still refreshing to watch in concert and I think references to them being no better than a 'pub rock band' are more than a little insulting and provacative for comments sake.

I'll be at the Royal Albert Hall on March 30th to watch the greatest live band ever to grace the stage play Quadrophenia and I can't wait.

Paypals draconian new rules mean that sellers (again) are automatically in the wrong until they have a certain number of transactions under their belts, and yes, they do hold funds from the seller until positive feedback is left, or several weeks have passed without any claims being made against the seller. This means until you leave feedback, or let weeks pass, the seller will NOT receive any money from the transaction. Paypal protecting the buyer at the cost of the sellers rights, as usual. GO FOR CASH IN HAND EVERY TIME!
They have shot themselves in the foot.... who in their right mind would send an item to a stranger without getting the money first? And that stranger can put a claim in against you, and eBay will immediately debit your account and give the buyer their money back! And who would leave feedback before receiving said item? Idiots.....

Also you CANNOT advertise an item on eBay without offering Paypal as an option. I did and got an email telling me I had to offer it or they'd pull the ad. Idiots.....

I agree try to get cash, but buyers are so over protected now that to not use Paypal doesn't make sense. BTW don't eBay own Paypal or have a major interest in it? They get to charge the seller about three times for selling an item!

  6.
Thought they could've spelt Entwistle :)
Yep, it'd have been nice!

Tried locating this bass in the Sotheby's catalogue and in Bass Culture - nowhere to be seen. That doesn't mean it's not right though - he did often have two of everything.

In Bass Culture there is a Charvel Ltd Edt P Bass that was custom made by Charvel, but it has a white/cream scratchplate; the thumb rest is below the G string and it doesn't say 'Fender' on the headstock. I'd be interested in seeing the provenance they have.......

  7.
Garethox, I don't believe Entwistle actually had the 2120 and the Ashdown RPM-1 hooked up together. I think the "Who Gear" website says he did but I don't think that's correct. From everything I've heard from 1999-2002 it really sounds like he was running the 2120 into one set of amplifiers and cabinets for distortion and the Ashdown into another set of amplifiers and cabinets for a complete, full-range clean sound.

Here's an interview where he describes how his system is set up: http://gc.guitarcenter.com/interview/thewho/ He says here the Ashdown RPM-1 and Digitech/Line 6 stuff were sent to different amplifiers for complete seperation of distortion and cleans.

We all know the sound he had for the 5:15 solo from the Royal Albert Hall DVD and how much distortion and chorus it has, but if you listen to that track from the CD, it's just the clean signal that got recorded but it's definitely full-range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ-dDg59I-Q
Thanks for that. I pretty much got it sorted. I biamp using a Morley aby - My 2120 goes into the Ashdown Mag300 then into a Hartke 4x10. This setup has the highs running through it and that signal is the signal I add different effects settings to. The low side I put through a TE 300W 15" combo and I run that clean.

Sounds great. I use different styles of distortion for different era's of The Who.

I look forward to reading the article..... cheers!

  8.
Didn't he do some of the string arrangements as well as being the musical director on tour? I'm sure I read that in some blurb next to a transcription in Bassist mag years ago. A great bass player, and surprising that he's not more well-known, considering the number of hits he played on.
I was guilty of thinking that Bjorn or Benny played bass on the tracks.

He is a producer and arranger as well - I'm sure I read that he arranged stuff for B&B's folk group in the late 60's.

Err... look at his friends page, :)

    A few notables on there!

Read a great comment from him. Mentions the basses he plays (Jazz, Musicman) then says 'don't ask me about strings though - I have had them on for about 5 years!'

  10.
For me, "My Generation" is an absolute milestone in the evolution of the electric bass. He completely shook off the whole I/V bass style that was typical of the time, and threw the bass to the front of the mix, and in a hit single, no less.
Absolutely. Have you ever heard Townshend's demo? That is really interesting... can be found on YT as well. The stutter is there and the spaces for the bass solo.
