1. I have a Phil Jones Bass Cub up for trade/sale if anyone is interested? I bought it from here over a year ago (I think?) and paid £300 for it. New they retail anywhere between £370 to £470 or there abouts. A fantastic quality amp that's really well built, superb sound quality and has a gig bag too. The unit is in fantastic condition, the gig bag is missing one foot but otherwise great condition as well. Has the manual somewhere too.

I'm looking for a trade on this one ideally. I really need a compact 1x12 cabinet at 8ohm to go with my Promethean combo. As the Promethean is already compact, I can't justify two small amps when the Promethean can do everything I need. I just need that extra *umph* from an extension speaker, and I think 1x12 would be just the ticket.

Not sure which 1x12 to be honest, but I'd prefer not be offered Ashdown or Trace Elliot cabs. Just not my thing I'm afraid, though there's nothing wrong with them. I'm also not interested in the Promethean 1x10 to go with the combo. I want that flexibility of using the combo on it's own, or the head with the 1x12, or both units together.

So what do people have? If it comes down to a sale, then I think £260 inclusive of a fully insured courier service or £250 cash collected would do it.

    PM me any questions. Cheers.

  2. Hey guys, thought you might appreciate this. I've just uploaded the Yolanda Charles gig I attended way back in march of 2010. It was at the Mad Ferret in Preston with her husband on drums and was like a music workshop. Full details are listed on the Soundcloud page. Hopefully Yolanda won't mind, but it was a corking set, and it seems a shame not to share it.

    Enjoy :)

That I do understand. Many people are completely unappreciative of the effort it takes to get up on stage with a band and try to entertain.

Agreed. It's weird though how the same set, same effort, same performance gets such wildly differing responses. Just part and parcel of the deal I guess ;)

  4. I'm by no means an expert myself, but I was given some good advice quite a few years ago. When trying out a bass I always try to play it acoustically first with no amp. Shop sellers know lots of tricks to big up the first impression of an instrument, when trying to get sales. This will include tried and tested chops and licks that sound impressive played through the best bass amp making unsuspecting buyers go wow!

Playing a bass acoustically if you can first gives you a reasonable measure of how it actually sounds without coloration from an amp. It's by no means fool proof, but I've found it very helpful in the past. Plus, asking a shop seller to go somewhere quiet to try out an instrument probably says more about your professionalism than any number of fancy chops you could play.

Shop owners/assistants are probably not bothered if you're a good a bad player, just whether you're a good or bad payer!

  5. Hells bells, have you read the spec of the combo, 500 watts at 8 ohms! ;)

Anyhow, three hundred noughts for a 500 watt combo is great value. £240 just for the head makes it a viable option as a backup unit too. I wonder it they're planning cabs too?

  6. Spotted this and thought that anyone interested in a uBass might want to consider a new range of uke basses by Kamoa. The bass bit is around 4.50. Not much else to go off yet and no real sound clips, but this looks really nice with proper strings etc.

  7. If you're looking for a better practice amp, maybe look at something like the Roland Cube amps. Still perfect for practice as they're not too loud, but offer good tone for their size and will crank a bit if needed, as and when you decide to join a band. They also have headphone sockets out too, so you can be even quieter if required.

Failing that, have a look around on the forum for sale section, or put up a 'wanted' advert on here. Must BC-ers are very generous and willing to help out if they can.

  8. Not really, but I do often wonder who has it now. It was a Hohner P-bass with fretless neck in sunburst finish. It weighed a bloody tonne, and if there was a ever a nuclear war that thing would of survived. It was built to last, and no matter how many times it got dropped, pranged or dinged it never once gave up. I'm sure a lot of my current back problems are due to that bass and my then poor skill and posture ;)

  9. I believe Kala's are known for taking several weeks for the strings to settle in, especially as the strings are very stretchy. I don't own a Kala, but I've been following several Youtube posters avidly as I do want to buy one eventually. Any how, a video you may find useful:

Failing that, there's a great uBass player on Youtube called Magnus, and he's super helpful to boot. Maybe email him if you don't find the answers here: http://www.youtube.com/user/bassMAGics?feature=watch

I've got their albums at home, and haven't listened to them in bloody ages. I'm so digging these out tonight :)

  11. Yeah Bilbo you're right, and I don't blame performers for taking the easy route. It's all too easy not to see the bigger picture of why we seem to get head-solo-head jazz. And of course, a thrown together band for a one-off gig for beer money is not going to be rehearsed. I guess it's just frustrating to see a legend like Gary Boyle of a fusion super group Isotope just doing the rounds. There were moments though when you could hear the fire of fusion trying to break out, but he had to hold it in ;)
