1.
The recent bad weather has made me want to sort out a decent amp cover for a Trace Elliot 1215 (my old one of a few rubble sacks gaffer taped together was ok, but not 100% rain-proof :) ). Does anyone have any recommendations for where to get one from?

Thanks!
Roqsolid amplifier covers via the net are good , strong and made to measure at a fair price.

I have one for my Markbass Traveler 15" and one for my Epifani 10" cabinet - approx £34 each(average).

Cheers

2. Fingerstyle all the time - varying which finger(s) to use and where to pluck the string.

Plectrum players usually sound like Joe Loss's Band, Arthur Greenslade & The G Men, or any Mecca hous eband.

Notable exceptions? Carol Kaye, Joe Osborne, John Paul Jones and Jim Rodford.

3. I was fortunate enough to see him on his recent PJB endorsement tour and it was an education.

He's been one of my major influences since I was 15, and to see and hear him live, telling stories about his life, answering questions and then demonstrating how he played various parts on Steely Dan albums was an experience.

When asked about what he thought of Steely Dan's music he replied " It will still be fresh a thousand years from now"

He also said that he would have liked to have been a drummer, naming Bernard Purdie as his inspiration.

He spoke highly of James Jamerson as a friend and influence and when asked what were his favourite "live" gigs over the years, replied "Two and a half years with Aretha Franklin's band, three years with King Curtis' band, and two years with Harry Belafonte's band"

If he comes over to the Uk again, try not to miss him!

4. At long last I have managed to lay my hands upon one of these highly sought after bass amps.
It is as good as "they" say - loud, approx 220 watts at 4 ohms, tonally very flexible, and lightweight.

I have tried it with a varity of basses, my 4 string aerodyne jazz, my son's 4 string Musicman Stingray and his Fender 1978 Musicmaster bass, a Wal fretless 5 string and a £3000 Czech upright bass. Each has it's own sound without colouration from the amp.
Channel 1 I believe to be for upright basses as it has the "in/out phase" switch which cancels out feedback and has a slightly deeper frequency on the bass control
Channel 2's Eq is slightly different, more lower mid and upper mid, and has a "1 mix 2" switch which gives the oppportunity of using both EQ settings for either channel.
I use the EQ at flat, add the bass & treble boost and run with the master volume at full and the channel volume wherever.
I am using a Markbass Traveler 1 x 15" cab and an Epifani 1 x 10" and horn cabinet. I could not wish for a better sound, it's clean , punchy, loud enough and cuts through guitars, drums, and Hammond organs without any problem.

I'm fortunate in that I work from home, which means I can (and do) spend countless hours practising and playing along with whatever is available and as the neighbours are all out , there's no complaints about volume!

6. Electromusic - Doncaster - Dave Ryan - 9/10

Bass Gallery - London - Alex - 9/10

Overwater basses - Carlisle - Laurence - 9/10

Rock Steady Music - Harrogate - Phil - 9/10

All four have been extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. (Consequently I have spent a lot of money with all four!)

Please reply here or PM phatmonkey if you have any feedback/problems or find any bugs, especially if you are using a browser we haven't tested.

10. I regularly try to minimise the amount of gear to carry, but common sense prevails and I put them back in the bag.

Details as follows:

Bass, amp., 2 cabinets, stand, 2 speaker cables - guitar lead, 4 way mains unit, spare set of strings, spare lead, extra long mains extension cable, roadie wrench, gaffa tape, spare strap, spare mains lead, gloves (particularly in winter) and anything else that may
be lying around.
I like the idea of a Di box - I'll get one.

Rhino.

11. Favourite band ever?

King Curtis & Kingpins - bassist Jerry Jemmot; Tower of Power - bassist Rocco Prestia; Little Feat - bassist Kenny Gradney;
Steely Dan - bassist Chuck Rainey.

Which one? Any - depending on mood, time of day, etc., etc.,

12.
Well I was not sure how the donation banner would go down, but I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated so far. It really is extremely kind, and every penny will be useful in helping build the site.

So, on behalf of everyone at BC towers,

THANK YOU!!!!

Hi,
Are you still "open" for donations? If so, what's the procedure?

13.
Thanks for the advice, thankfully I live close do a guy who is wise in `all things valve' and will ask him to look at the amp and make any modifications. I'm not even sure if I'll use it, the bone player in the band had it `lying about' in his garage and just wanted to give it a home.

Cheers

Hi,
If it's of any interest, the guy who designed Simms Watts, Pete Tulett, designed and produced Peterson combos.

14.
Hi Rhino,
Nice gear list, and the first time ever I've heard of anyone but me using an AC50 head for bass. Bloody good it was, too! And the Bassman 50/2x15 is one of the best rigs I've ever heard if you like it big and deep. Although these days, it would barely make a good bedroom rig!
Hi Telebass,

Yeah, the AC50 through my Wallace 2 x 18" cab was impressive, in fact whilst I was working in Italy during 1969, a local bass player offered to exchange his black front Bassman amp and two cabinets for the Vox /Wallace rig.
I was talked out of the deal by our guitarist, (tsk, tsk,) who said that the voltage difference would mean that it was unusable in the UK.

A better version of the Vox/Wallace combination was using a friend's black face Showman amp (85 watts) but he wouldn't swap the Vox for the Fender. He still has the Fender. (tight Yorkshireman).

Cheers,

Rhino

15.
Hey Rhino,
I remember seeing this amp of yours, and yes the cas is a bit tatty, but I wouldn't call it very rough.
I'm sure it could be tidied up without too much trouble.

I know it is on the heavy side and wondered if it would fit in an SKB type rack. That would save on weight and the need to resfurbish the case.

I also remember the Dynacord rig you had back in the seventies. Quality!
Hi, a good idea - lighter than wood and probably less costly - I'll look into it.

Cheers,

Rhino

16.
In case anyone out there is wondering what a BA300 is like, here's a link to download a PDF with pictures and technical data (it's in German, BTW). Nice amp!

Dynacord BA300 datasheet

Good luck with the sale, rhino. :)
Guten tag, mein freint, (that's enough!) thanks for the info & pic., they look German, don't they.

Rhino.

17. I have a Dynacord BA300 200 watt valve bass amp which I have no further use for - it needs renovating as the amp box is very rough.
It works OK - a few crackles here and there but nothing serious as far as I know. I used Dynacord during the early '70's and discounting the weight of the stuff it was an excellent rig.
It's too costly to move via courier etc., so pickup would be favourable but I would consider delivering within the North of England in return for a contribution towards fuel costs.

How much for this wonderful thing ?- make me an offer around £200.00 .

18.
Hi Rhino

Why are you called Rhino? :)

Hamster
Because, according to a previous band member, I am thick skinned, dangerous and unstoppable.

19. Weird gigs - I worked with a country band in the early 80's and did a gig in Horncastle (I think).

The audience were rowdy and the only thing that shut them up was when the drummer told them that Sooty would appear if they were quiet. (He had his arm behind the drapes at the rear of the stage and was moving the drapes with a drum stick.)

This did work for a short while until the concert secretary informed us, and the crowd, that he had not booked Sooty.

When asked about the gig, all we could say was that the audience were "with us all the way" but we shook them off at Doncaster!

Rhino. (don't ask)

Update : I now have two PJB 4B cabinets linked to the Walter Woods amp - impressive.
I'm looking for a Wal Pro 1E (preferably) as I sold the one I used to have some 12 years ago to a bass player from the Wakefield area, Mick Close, I think he was called. It was in red and the serial number was PB1151 - anybody seen or heard of it ?

Update: January 2008 - bought PJB Suitcase combo so now have two workable rigs.
I've also found a Wal Pro 1 passive bass - I think I now have everything I ever wanted (except Nigella Lawson).
