  1. I've been looking to try a US G&L for a few weeks now, and am close to giving up because they seem to have almost zero distribution. Yes, their site lists a UK distributor, who in turn lists UK 'outlets',  but few if any of them even have Tribute basses, let alone US models.

This is a real shame because I love the ideas and the execution involved. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

Collected the Eden yesterday and now, thankfully, the only noises it makes are the ones I want to hear 😊  I told Pete I was in no rush so he said he'd work on it in between other more urgent stuff - hence the extended timescale.  He traced the problem to the pre-amp circuitry and, before fault-finding down to component level, checked out the price and availability of a replacement populated pcb with Marshall UK.  This was in stock at such a reasonable price that it was definitely cheaper to go this way.  So, Pete's charge for giving it the once-over, replacing an almost dead master volume pot and supplying/fitting the board was a very reasonable (IMHO) £120.  That's exactly what I paid EMS (plus outward delivery cost) to service and replace a faulty pot on my TE AH300SMC over 10 years ago.  Obviously it significantly increases the cost of this allegedly "mint" WT550 (don't know how the seller can sleep at night - hopefully he can't) but it now works a treat and I feel confident about its future reliability.  Not gigged it yet but this thing sounds totally amazing through one of my BF SCG3 cabs - can't wait to hook it up to both and turn the wick up!!

Very pleased to hear it's sorted. I have a dim sense that one day these will actually become pretty sought-after.

The only time I really use the EQ is as a notch filter - rest of the time it's just flat because the thing is so well voiced. The 'Enhance' knob is pretty much always at minimum on mine,  and the compressor goes largely unused because the valves give such a sweet natural compression if you push them anyway.

Finally, to echo Bill's point, I've bought things on BC described as 'mint' that patently were not, and it is (very occasionally)  a problem. Didn't we used to have a feedback mechanism for this?

  3. I've owned a WT300 (one of the original heads) and a 210XLT for the best part of a decade. Occasionally I think of changing, but nothing gets close to the preamp or the voicing on it for me. The eq is very powerful, but the thing is so well voiced in the first place that I hardly ever use it, unless I need to deal with a room or bass issue.

Agree that it's not a particularly 'valvy' sound, but as with many valve preamps it will give a very sweet compression if pushed, rather than distortion.

  4. I've never played a bad one. There was a time in the mid eighties when the Thunder 1A was the go-to bass for those of us with a certain budget. And they built an unlined fretless which was the ultimate pose machine.

I picked up a Spectrum DX (the twin pup one) a few years ago for 80 quid and then gave it away with a couple of things to lucky BC'ers. Not sure I should have let it go - it was like a poor man's Zon Legacy.

They are a strong candidate for investment, as good ones are still available pretty cheap, while their cachet is increasing.

I've only recently been applying myself to double thumbing as a technique in itself.

I've not yet got it down to my satisfaction but it helps me to get a better feel with some of the lines I practice.  I'd imagine it to be as fast as playing with a plectrum when done by qualified adults under the guidance of the local safety elf just as soon as he receives the risk assessments signed off in triplicate.  I can see why MK uses insulating tape.  It's a technique that requires toughness and stamina when used consistently

It's never going to have the clack attack of a plec but it's good to have the knack never the less.  *Try saying that out loud with a gob full of granola.

*Mild choking hazard and strong expletives to be expected.

I'm not 100% that MK double thumbed, at least in his heyday. That triplet speed is more left hand patting. Could be wrong though...

Personally I learned to play with a pick, but haven't used one for at least 20 years. I was lucky enough about 18 months in to learn fingerstyle with three fingers instead of two, which means that 16ths or even 32nds are not that challenging; whereas I suspect the issue with a pick for me at least would be consistency.

  6. As the buyer of BassBod's WT300 (well...I think I am anyway), it's still sitting here as I type this and I've had no inclination to buy another head. Well worth getting them sorted IMHO, because they are such nice amps, and I've never had a problem with this one.
