Last set was £75 for 5 string TI Jazz flats . £50 odd for Labella originals for the Yamaha . All the others have Roto 88 tapes . Just under £50 . The longer I play them the better value they seem . Can't see me changing them in the next 20 years . Long term investment .

+1 for the Hotone nano , I love mine . But the best you will get in my opinion is the Phil Jones bass Bighead . Expensive but an absolute gem .

I use Labella original 54s on my Yamaha BB . Love them . Fortunately I am a heavy handed ( ham fisted?) player so the tendon snapping tension is never a problem . Never liked rounds since day one of playing the bass . To each their own .....

But then no records should anything go wrong.
Even better deal with them face to face . I have found over the years that I get a lot more progress , and a whole lot less bulls**t when dealing with folks face to face . I have had all sorts of fob offs , lies , mistruths and even threats of bodily harm over email and telephone , that mysteriously disappear and are resolved when I front up in person . None of this from the lovely folk at BD by the way , I am referring to life in general .
If I have a customer in the shop in front of me , they are , at that moment the priority . I will not make them wait while I answer a phone call or an email . It is just common good manners . So to get to the front of the queue , front up . If you want to do a deal via the phone or email , take your place in the queue .

Pick up the phone . Its a lot easier to actually speak to someone .

Had an Xvive U2 for years . Never had a drop out or any other problem . Battery lasted for 5 hours on sunday and still going . Active/passive all good .
-
I have a Hipshot supertone on my JC . Love it for the looks and adjustability . Not a huge fan of the 3 point bridge but its not a dealbreaker for such a fantastic bass.
-
Alright , I'll give it a go . I'm not too familiar with their options but ...... White ash body with a wax finish , 66 slab with no contours , maple neck and fingerboard , unlined fretless , Hipshot tuners .
-
The Geezers are passive . But the same would apply to the active set up . I would have to check but I think the tone caps are the same , but the pots are 25k .
-
I've played a few gigs with mine but not mega loud stage volume . I had to really try to get it to feedback . Like standing in front of the cab and letting a note ring out . You'll be fine . (probably)

Not sure if its allowed to post a link to the other forum , but this is exactly how I did exactly what the OP is asking about . Its a lot easier than posting it all over here .

A coat of wax and I think it would look OK . Better than a lot of relic jobs anyway .

So buy it . Or buy the pickups . Or don't . I don't get the point .

Well go on then .

Red oxide primer . It actually looks the mutts nuts .

Sorry Sir, you appear to have stumbled unwittingly into an Internet forum rather than the sensible and rational destination you were headed for. If you'd just turn the light off on your way out we can resume our endless circular pointless arguments until Mum brings us jelly and squash.Light turned off . Dogs let out . Off to bed . I'll let mum sort breakfast out 😃

You would enjoy the air guitar YouTube guy. He started off with changing guitar body for no name body then lump of 4x2, then literal air by stretching strings between two solid workbenches and propping the pickups underneath.
Oh good grief . Here we go again ....................................................................................
Does anybody actually get the joy of just playing the bass with some like minded idiots for the hell of it . Instead of just pointlessly arguing about the minutiae of stuff that literally nobody other than us cares about . We will all end up in the same place eventually . Enjoy the ride while we can .

That's a very cool micro-rig.
Do you offer a build service? 😉
No mate . Life is too busy . If you can solder a jack plug together and drill a hole it is not beyond you .

So it would be possible to fit a USB-C power bank, one of these boards, and a TPA3118 into a micro cab, with a USB connector and a jack socket on the back panel, and have a portable powered speaker. And a switch to allow switching between active and passive.
I do have a plan for the future that is similar to this . I was going to build a micro version of my Markbass 801 , using a 6in speaker , DIY rear ported cabinet and a class D board . I was going to stick with the power tool battery as they can be changed quickly , are easily replaced and I have a load of them . A spare can be tucked in a pocket . I reckon 4 of them would do you for 24 hrs play time .
I fed the original into a high efficiency 12in 4ohm cab and was astounded by the volume . I think a 4ohm 6in driver with 95dB at 1W/m would be more than loud enough .
Regarding the active/passive switch , I have found it to be unnecessary . The amp will work fine with a passive . If active overloads it , which it didn't when I tried it , just back off the volume on the bass .

Original build was with TDA8932 . Mk2 was built with TPA3118 which is 60W at 24v into 4ohm . I think it was 35w at 18v into 8ohm . On recommendation from contributors , mk2 was built with fused power supply . Output is bridge tied load so needs to be an insulated jack . I used my PJB HA1 as a preamp and later the Hotone nano bass . Now I use it straight from the bass as it appears not to need a preamp .
Here are a few photos .

I am using , when needed , a 35W class D module from ebay for a fiver , from an 18v power tool battery , intlo a PJB C2 cabinet . I bought a Hotone nano bass to use as a preamp but there was no need . A fine sounding little amp that is easily transportable . A 2000mah battery has been tested and was still working 4 hours later . To change the battery takes seconds . This has nowhere near the power of the Briefcase but the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer . This was designed to play a gig that is about an hours walk from the public highway , so the fact that it is a quarter of the weight of the Briefcase is a bonus . I will see if I can dig out some photos and post them here if I find them .

Looking for Flats recommendations.

I have used Roto 77s on a EMG equipped P bass and loved them . Quite bright for the time I had them on but they will mellow out in time . I have Jamerson 54 originals on a Yamaha BB bass and love the sound and feel of them , but the BB is active so I have a lot more control over the EQ . Also a set of TI jass flats on a Sire P5R 5 string . Loving them , but completely different to both the rotos and the LaBellas . Quite low tension and easy to play .
The only way to find out what suits is to try them and see what suits you . Start with the Rotos as you have them already and see how you get on . There is huge variety in the sound and feel of flats .
