I would also keep in mind that the EHB1005MS is a multi-scale bass with fanned frets, I personally wouldn't feel that confident picking up a multi-scale 5 strings as first bass, I'd be spending 90% of the time figuring out how to mute the B string when not in use and getting used to the different fret positions.

I hate lines and dots, they make me look down when I'm playing. If I don't have either I use my ears and maintain far better visual contact with the band and audience. Changes the complexity of what I play at times, but that's no bad thing 🤔
That’s true, but the MC I found seems to have the same configuration…

This this this........
Unfortunately I can’t get that one from where I am but there is a similar one I found. Is it heavy? Does it balance ok?

I’ve been looking for a while to get myself a sub 1k unlined fretless bass.
All in all, Ibanez seems to be a happy middle with a few interesting options in the price range I have in mind.
I have found 3 basses that I could get, but as I’ve never owned one before, I was hoping to get some advice on the difference between their vintage and modern offers from people who have tried one or more of these.
From the cheapest to the most expensive I found:
- a 1979 passive Roadster RS800
- an SRF700 Portamento
- a 1978 Musician MC940
Each one is about 200eur more expensive than the previous, the Portamento is near me so I could go pick it up and try it, but the others are a bit far.
My other basses are a Warwick Thumb and a P Bass for context.
Thanks in advance!

Or if you’re short 3k you could settle for his P bass

Took the liberty of running the search:

Having acquired an ‘88 Thumb after going through several more modern iterations I can only echo what’s already been said, these are worth the money and the neck is a joy to play.

They just announced two tribute concerts for him, one of which will be in London on the 3rd of September. It's bound to be a really emotional moment for the band and the fans...

that's what I reckon it is. It's just missing the last digit, which would be the day of the week.
Can we see the headstock and tuners too please
Now that you mention that, there is some glare on the right hand side that seems to hide a red spot - maybe the last digit?

I have looked into similarly stamped necks recently and all I could think it's '79 (unless it could be '69)?
The way to look at it should be
01 = Precision01 = Rosewood
4 = Week 4
9 = 79?
4 = Thursday.
Would be similar to this - https://www.talkbass.com/threads/fender-neck-date.1484719/

88 thumb will have lovely solid brass hardwear made by Schaller compared to the cheaper alloys they used later - (change in early 90s) ild keep them as they are
True that, plus I found out the old Schaller bridges are smaller than the newer ones, so they don’t actually fit. Currently on the lookout for an old black bridge if any comes up for sale…

Really want to try one.
One on reverb with ebony fretboard and the EMGs mentioned above (stock in the limited edition)
On the watchlist
What are the necks like?
It really depends on the year. The early necks are slim and fast, the later ones get chunkier and then I think they switched back recently, it really needs to be tried. Generally speaking the lower notes feel quite far given the size of the body.

The neck is an Allparts (10’ radius I think) but I can measure it when I get back home next week

Good question. The Fender went last week so in theory this could now come on my next trip to London for a collection there. I don’t have a date at this stage, but may be able to squeeze a trip in May or else in June.

Back on due to a timewaster who didn't turn up... (not a BCer, from another forum)

Lozz bought a bass from me today. He drove to London to pick it up and we ended up having a very nice chat over a cup of coffee while getting the transaction sorted. Great guy to deal with, recommended!

Just came up on Bassbros, no photos of the parts but decent price

The thinning of the herd continues...
Selling my Limelight Precision in Olympic White over Candy Apple Red, with Precision neck (42m nut width). I bought this from Mark at Classic & Cool Guitars in 2021, but I need to sell it to finance a recent purchase. It had some small adjustments done as you can read below but it plays a dream now.
Specs as follows, including some changes.
1963 Precision Bass Specs
Olympic White over Candy Apple Red with silver base coat
Medium/heavy relic
Rosewood P width neck with Clay dots
Tortoiseshell scratchplate -> I have replaced the original scratchplate with a Fender vintage series (darker) one. In the process, I realised there was a small issue with the earthing / shielding. The bass has been looked at by Joseph Kaye who went through earthing and shielding again. He also added a small shim which could probably be done without. Both scratchplates are included in the sale
All metal work just lightly tarnished -> When I tried to lower the action recently, I realised the grub screws were completely stuck. I tried to fix them but I broke two in the process. I decided to replace the entire bridge with a Gotoh VTB-4 Aged Chrome bridge, it still looks aged but everything moves freely now. The original bridge is included in the sale.
Gotoh Reverse Resolite Tuners
Strap button on reverse of headstock
Alder body
Alnico pick ups
Vintage wired
CTS pots and Spraque cap
Switchcraft Jack
Thumb rest below strings
Weight is 8.3lb / 3.7kg on Mark's scale.
The bass comes with a tweed hard case and it's currently strung with LaBella 760FL DT flats.
Please note I am based in France. I strongly prefer collection but can also look into shipping within the EU. Given my Fender is being sold to the UK and I only have two hands, for the time being no UK sales on this one.
Price is EUR 1,150 (GBP950)Price is EUR 1,050 (GBP900)
Note - the first two photos show the current scratchplate, the rest the original one

Awesome, these are great basses (I have one and another on the way) good luck with the sale.
Why not get a third to replace the trio of Limelights

A bit gutted to sell this, but I just bought a 71 P that needs financing and 3 Precisions are a bit too much, so this one has to go.
Not much to say I think, it's a 2013 American Standard Precision, the series is very well regarded and it comes with the stock Custom Shop pickup (from what I can tell, it's the CS62 but please correct me if I'm wrong).
The bass is in great condition, it only has one ding and one-two scratches as shown in the photos. Nut width is 41mm, action around 2-2.5m at the 17th fret and it weighs 3.9kg on the bathroom scale
It comes with original hard case as well as case candy, mostly untouched. The case has a couple of scratches shown in the photos. I also include the original white scratchplate, the one currently on is a Fender replacement.
Please note I am based in France. I prefer collection or I can look into shipping within the EU. Sale in the UK is in theory possible as I travel back to London regularly (once every 1-2 months) but it would need to be done as collection when I am there.
Price is EUR 1,150 (GBP950)

Just bought a bass from Clarky. Top guy to deal with, couldn’t have had a smoother transaction. Quick communication and he even delivered the bass himself to help me with the logistics. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. I got a similar reply about how they use different supplies and are not sure about what screws my bass mounts so it’s not possible to send replacements, so I’ll get going with the wd-40 and/or the drill and try a few options, I should have some Gotoh parts in the drawer so hopefully those fit my bass too

After a week down with Covid, last night I found the time to drive down to try the Portamento, and I ended up taking it back with me. The MC940 was already gone so that made my choice a bit easier. I’m still not fully convinced by the pick-ups, but the piezo + playing on the board gives a very nice upright sound that works well for me! Just need to find the right strings now…
