Guzzigaga

The strings have been on for about a month but I haven't been playing it much because of the problem. I have in the meantime taken some advice and really given the E string a brutal stretch, it was a one eye shut job. I am quite used to setting up basses and guitars and have never had to be quite so harsh with a string. It does seem to be working, not fixed but getting there. I'll keep doing it every time I play hopefully it will settle down.

Thanks for all your replies. I've done all of the above with no change. I am just going to refit the round wound I took off. Just the E, this has now put me off buying roto's in the future.

I have a squier musicmaster Vista series. I've always used round wounds but thought I would try flats. A, D and G strings are fine, the E sounds like I'm playing in a bin. I've done the intonation, string height, pickup height. When I fret the string it sounds out of tune, doesn't matter if I press hard or soft. They are rotosound short scale flats. I contacted them thinking it could be a dead string and they sent me a replacement straight away. Thanks rotosound, nice customer care👍. But alas it's the same story, aahhhh. any suggestions? Maybe it just doesn't like them😭.

I just picked up a 5 string for £100. It was absolutely filthy so I've had it in bits thoroughly cleaned and now waiting for me to set up. Been looking for one of these for a while. They seem to be a very well made instrument.

I think I will keep an eye out for a second hand older one. I've had to watch a few go on eBay as they were just too far away. I prefer the older worn look, much nicer than a new shiny one, I don't care about a few dings and scrapes. Thanks for the advice. I set up guitars as a bit of a sideline/ hobby so I should be able to do a decent setup.

I would like to give the double bass a go but finding information on what's good and what's not is difficult. So what's the opinion out there. I don't have a great deal of money to spend so I'm looking at the student / beginner level stuff. So far I have found, forenza, sotendo, stentor, thomman (I heard it's not cheap buying from Europe Any more due to the split). Does anyone have any experience with these brands, am I missing a decent brand. Basically are any cheap double basses worth buying. There isn't much info on this stuff out there, could only find a few vids on YouTube

Just found this site whilst looking for information on affordable double basses. I play an 80's charvel fusion 4 and a squier MusicMaster Vista series short scale. Looking forward to some chats about those. Cheers.
