For sale is this fantastic double bass made by Wilhelm Erberle in Germany. I bought this bass new in 1996 from Thwaites in Watford. Since then it has been upgraded by Bridgewood & Neitzert in London, who altered the angle of the fingerboard providing a far superior action and making it far easier to play. The bass is equipped with a Bridgewood & Nietzert bridge. Included in the sale is a K&K Sound Bass Max transducer pickup which provides an great amplified and recorded sound. I have used this bass professionally and it is the dominant instrument on tracks UD30 and Pookus Dub

  2. Blimey! Those speaker screws are tight - my DeWalt won't budge them and I can't undo them by hand. I've got an impact driver but am afraid I might damage something if I start bashing the screws. Time for some professional intervention. Can anyone recommend someone who could take a look at my cab in the Faversham area - Kent?

  3. I used a multimeter on a speaker cable (one that I know works) plugged into the cab - the ohm reading stayed at '1'. I did the same with my GK cab to check the multimeter and got a reading close to 8 (it's an 8 ohm cab). Therefore there must be a fault with the cab. Next I'll have to check each speaker.

I don't think there's a fuse in the ABM810, but if there is then it'll be on the reverse side of the connection plate.
If you're going to take a look in there then check to make sure that none of the wires from the jack socket are floating around loose - that could cause the whole thing to stop working...
Yeah thanks, I've had a look in there - no fuse and the wires are all secure.

  5. Thanks for your suggestions. It's not the cable. The amp works thru a different cab. So it must be the cab where the fault lies. What next? Is there a fuse in the cab? I can't see how the speakers could have blown (I was playing very quietly) and the cab is rated at 1200w.

  6. Can anyone suggest a possible cause and solution? I have a 5 year old Ashdown ABM Evo II 900 head going into an ABM 810 cab. Up until yesterday I've never had any problems. However, during a practice session the sound cut out. The power still going to the amp, the VU responding to input etc. I checked the line out signal to another amp and that worked. What should I check? What could be the problem? Thanks, Jamie

  7. Hi, I am considering a Schaller bridge for one of my basses. I then discovered a piezo version which Schaller say can be used in a midi set up. Has anyone any experience of these? I have thought about triggering midi devices with a bass for sometime and this could be the answer!

  8.
This might do the job (see attached - just a quick pen 'n' ink sketch). Does depend on how well the pickups are matched - if one has a significantly different impedance, you may have to put a blend pot between the two pickups to balance the volume. Are both pickups single-coil?

    Also, you'll need a three-way switch - on/on/on with a centre detent.

    HTH, Ian
Wow, thanks Ian. Just what I needed. Both pick ups are the standard Sidewinder Humbucker on an EB0. I've got a multimeter, maybe I can check the impedance of the pick ups with that? Cheers. :)

  9. Hi,
I am adding a second pick up to an EBO bass, but just want to keep the controls simple - using existing volume and tone pots - just adding a 3 way selector for neck / both / bridge. Please can any electrical types help me with a diagram. Thanks.

    Gannet @ 45Hz :)

  11.
Upper mid is usually honk IME :)
Yes!! Honk!! Could use symbols like on Orange amps - a horn with a bulb symbol for honk . Sub could be a submarine etc etc

  12.
IMO Ashdowns are boomy anyway so you might want to rename the amp!

IMO the upper mid and the mid range don't go along nicely with other names you have like clarity, deep etc.

If yo're planning to make a new enclosure for it than good luck, you will need a lot of it with the sliding controls!

    Cheers
    Jack
I'm thinking of replacing the sliding controls with rotary ones. You are right about the upper mid and mid ranges. I can't think of what to call those yet! Cheers :)

  13.
To be fair I think SP has a very good point. The terms you're using are subjective and what you might call one thing, someone else may describe differently. Just look at all the different ways "growl" in presented on this forum
If those are what those frequencies mean to you then go for it
They are terms employed by a mixing engineer - relating generally to the frequency ranges of the Ashdown controls and their effect on the sound of a bass guitar. So if my bass is sounding a bit too boomy - I can cut the 180hz range (boom). If I want more clarity - I can boost the 340hz range (clarity) and so on. So the terms are not in my opinion arbitrary. I think it will be useful for me anyway - like you say. Thanks for your input :)

  14.
Never seen those. They around long?
http://www.giggear.co.uk/p/Jim-Dunlop-Felt-Pick/

Yeah I think so. I read somewhere Macca used them on Sgt Pepper.

  15.
"Yeah, sounding ok, but you need a bit more gannet, and you want to scoop the petrels right out"
    :)
I dialled in some more cormorant - cutting though the mix nicely!

  16. Man these are fat! Fat and fat tone. Using them on my EB0 with flatwounds. Sounds like the bass you get in 60s European art movie soundtracks. Which is thuddy. And fat. I never thought I could get so much joy from a small piece of felt. :)

  17. I have two! The mahogany makes for a great tone. A hipshot supertone bridge and dimarzio model 1 pick up really bring out the best. I also routed 4mm out of the neck pocket to give the EB more of a Gibson set neck feel. Had to modify the bridge a bit. Next will be a fretless neck for one of them and the other I will turn into an EB3 - with an Aguilar preamp. I like them. Use a decent set of flats.

  18.
I think that if you're planning to personalise your amp, then surely asking other people for their opinions kinda defeats the object? Just do what looks good to you. Name the knobs and sliders after varieties of seabird if that's what grabs you.

    S.P.
Yeah thanks :)

What I'm fishing for are any suggestions / opinions / solutions / general discussion / shared experiences / things to look out for / resources etc
Then you come along and wee on my firewirks! lol

  19. Though I'm quite happy with my Ashdown ABM EvoII 900 sound and features. I have grown tired of it's appearance. So I have decided to redesign the case and interface. (Note to readers I have a degree in art so it should look ok!). I will also rename the various functions. In my research on Eqing - I found words that describe what each frequecy does to the sound of a bass. So as there are 7 frequency controls on the amp I decided to give them a name relating to what they do to the sound. I got this far - any comments / suggestions?

    • Bass: ±15dB @ 45Hz Depth
    • Middle: ±15dB @ 660Hz Mid Range
    • Treble: ±15dB @ 7kHz Brilliance
    • Slider 1: ±15dB @ 180Hz Boom
    • Slider 2: ±15dB @ 340Hz Clarity
    • Slider 3: ±15dB @ 1.3kHz Attack
    • Slider 4: ±15dB @ 2.6kHz Upper Mid

I like the appearance of old testing gear / Orange Amps etc. I will create a new case for the chassis to fit in so I can extend the control panel upwards and reconfigure the layout.

  20.
You should ask at http://www.rickresource.com/forum/ - someone will probably have one in their spares box. :)

They'll probably want to see lots of pics of your '73 JG. As do I.
