The Fat Fighters - you must do this. Love it

It's what they're called in our house, my 5 year old saw to that.

I was trying to think of some stage names for the band members, as per The Rutles. So far I've got Dave Gross, Taylor Porkins and Fat Smear - there's also Chris Chips-eat, and Cake Mendel. Needs some work though I think.

  2. I was watching the Foo Fighters doc 'Back and Forth' last night, and thinking it would be good fun to be in a Foo's tribute ( despite the fact there already is a very successful one - Foo Fighters UK), as they have some great material, and it's pretty straightforward stuff. Plus you get to play some nice P basses!

The trouble is of course, whilst I could easily manage the gingery-ness of Nate Mendel, I'm too old and frankly too well upholstered to carry it off. Then... brainwave : why not have a Foo's tribute full of overweight/old blokes, and we could go out as the Fat Fighters - " the same, but heavier......".

This of course then led to a train of thought about overweight/old bloke tribute bands. I know there is someone on here who plays in a funk band, made up of somewhat larger chaps, who use the frankly genius "Above Average Weight Band".

    Any more?

I remember them well! Just shows how the price of vintage MIJ stuff has plummeted - a few years back this would've been £200+, this one's been relisted a few times with ever-decreasing prices.

I do love these mad old Westies, I've always hankered a little over the Dynasty (sort of a deranged Flying V) in 2-tone glitter. Love the bottle-opener headstock on this one though.

A very bad part of me would like to turn up for a Jazz gig with one of these. :D

Like your style, and it be worth it just to see the faces, particularly on a dep!

  4. I'm sure I've posted about this before, but when I was at school in the 70s, the school's bass and guitar were two Hofner semis - the bass being a mint condition 60s President, but of course, we jam fingered oiks weren't allowed to actually touch them, let alone play them, so they sat in the locked music cupboard, in pristine condition, untouched.

My old school amalgamated with another in the early 80s, and I sometimes wonder if they were 'lost' in transit to the new site!

Wham, "Make It Big." I have been widely ridiculed for this choice since I bought it in 1984, but I still love it and reckon that there isn't a duff track on the album. It sold about 10 million copies, so I can't be alone in owning it but I think everyone else denies it!

I think they were unfairly dismissed as Pretty Boy Pop by the musical fraternity and they always had a pretty decent band with them. If nothing else, the (not on this album) Club Tropicana bass line is fearsome.

Deon Estus on bass I think...... I agree, great line, and 'I'm your man' is a fantastic party track. It has the added attraction of offering your singer the chance to play some tambourine!!

  6. I bought this from a BC member about 2 years ago, with the intention of modding it, but since then I've moved houses and jobs, and its not going to happen : but it's taking up room....... so, if you fancy a winter project on a classic style of guitar, with thousands of freely available parts, here you go.

It's a lovely bit of wood : made in China I believe, and from what I can tell, imported by a company in the west country, and sold on ebay. Really nice guitar for the money, and frankly, hundreds of times better than the 'egg slicer' I started on!

Price is for cash on collection, and I'm in Staffordshire - just off the M6. Happy to discuss other payment methods/posting at cost (your choice of carrier), and subject to the purchaser accepting liability for loss etc. It will be very well packaged. I will need to source a box though!

(Cheeky) Link to the original thread. I'll get some current pics up shortly, but its been on a stand in my office for 2 years, so no change in condition.

  7. I was listening to Planet Rock this afternoon and heard some Black Sabbath, and was musing on what a great track I think "Never say die" is, but its from an album that was made as Ozzy was in and out of the band before quitting to go solo I believe.

I remember when it came out, I thought it was a good album, but my mates thought otherwise.

Which set me thinking about other albums from my youth, where I thought they were really good, and others thought they were, frankly, sh*te!

And that brought to mind 'Harder Faster' by April Wine - the Canadian band, from which the video comes. It looks like it was filmed in Le Studio in Quebec - beloved of Rush in their heyday.

Probably their biggest hit : "I like to rock"

I had this on vinyl, and vaguely remember one of the sleeve pics was of the guitarist's frankly Nigel Tufnell-esque collection of about 40 Les Paul's : all on stands, out in the studio, and him standing in the centre like some squire with his prize herd! Can't find the pic though, and my vinyl is in a storage unit currently.

    What's your "Seriously?" album?

  8. Amazing insight into the making of Harmony guitars - beloved of Sears & Roebuck, and the likes of Jack White. A mail order guitar, retailing for $19, and made entirely by hand. Predictably, that couldn't last, and they went bust in 1975 : fascinating pictures.

Great read - thanks for posting.

Dare I suggest "Lars was right".......

The tipping point has to come, when being a musician ceases to be the (albeit limited) opportunity for a full time career, that it is is now. If established artists like Iggy can't make a living, albeit, he's possibly doing pretty well by normal standards, but I doubt he's lighting cigars with $100 bills.

It does make me wonder how an artist of the likes of Neil Young will ever come through again : his career has been fascinating, and is built on runs of outstanding albums, punctuated with utterly unlistenable stuff like 'Trans' - but he's never dull. However, these days, he'd be dropped after a couple of albums, because even the great albums wouldnt sell in the numbers seen for the likes of Harvest and After the Gold Rush, and one duff album, and he'd be dropped. Equally, he wouldn't make a living out of the royalties paid by the likes of Spotify, if he'd only had a big album, and a poor performing follow up.

There seems to be a disconnect between the music public's desire for great new artists and material, and their willingness to pay for it. Music can't be free if we want it to be made by people who have a long running artistic career of highs and lows, which is interesting.

  10. Fascinating transcript of Iggy Pop's speech, during which he shares that if he didn't have the car insurance adverts and the BBC show, he'd be tending bar between sets.

Certainly he's not what we might call a mainstream star, but I certainly imagined he'd be comfortably off, given his back catalogue.

  11. An old friend of mine had one of these, which he bought new in 1963, and it was a fabulous bass. It had been repaired, after a fall from the stand took the head off in about 1975(!), but the luthier made a fantastic job of it, and you'd be hard pushed to know. He played it through a 1960s Vox AC50, and a Vox 1x 18. Not a man looking for sparkling high end tones, as you can imagine. Sounded awesome - a real trouser flapper and perfect for Beatles and Stones stuff.

I wish I had the cash.

GLWTS - great basses, and a collectors item for the future I'm sure.

  12. The most bizarre request for a tab Ive seen related to the segment of the film 'It might get loud', where Jack White is demonstrating with a plank, a pickup a bottle and some nails, how easy it is to make a diddley bow.

He then connects up to an overdriven amp, and proceeds to play some one string slide riffs.

A kid had posted in the comments action in the youtube excerpt, asking for a tab for the guitar part!

As a turgid young teen, I'd favour the shower section. Usually a bit of bare leg and a tantalising glimpse of side-boob on offer. Kids today have it so easy, don't they? Reverse cowboy, teabagging, Arabian goggles, dirty Sanchez, pearl necklaces and Boston pancakes, all at the click of a mouse!

    Aye - you were lucky.........

We had to make do with torn up mags, caught in hedges when we were kids......

This is actually a fairly accurate description of my bass...
That's a beautiful piece of wood, but I'd be petrified of catching the knobs on something and shearing one off. Oh - and it has 2 more strings than I need, but a fabulous piece of craftsman ship by the look of it. Your pride and joy no doubt.

And the fact that so many 'standard' basses come up for sale must surely bring into question the validity of the thought process of buying one.
Not quite the same thing though, in the sense that with a mass produced instrument, the decision is about what best suits from a range of fairly limited and 'stock' options, with their own manufacturing variables - and consequently, over time, the aspect that is least 'perfect' may grate to a point where the player wants to move it on. By definition, a custom made instrument should involve no compromises, or the need to accept 'near enough', as you are paying for a bespoke instrument.

In sense, it's rather like buying a suit. You can get something get that fits pretty well from M&S, but a Saville Row bespoke suit will fit perfectly, but only the person for whom it's made, and that process will have taken note of all their tastes and fitting needs. You'll get more for a second hand Saville Riw suit, but not proportionally to what was paid for it, as much of the premium when new is in the quality of the work and the fit - which doesn't transfer at the same value to the second owner.

  16. I hadn't looked at ACG, so googled them, and sadly it confirmed my worst fears about custom basses : I couldn't find a design I liked at all, and they look like the kind of things I've only ever seen being wielded by jazzers and slap addicts, and usually with more strings than I like. No problem with that, and its all about beauty being in the eye of the beholder - but - the issue with holding value, is that they are by definition, one person's 'ideal', and as a consequence of human nature, and no two of us liking exactly the same things, they will only ever ''fit' the commissioning player (hopefully).

It's rather like 'custom cars', (which appear to be a passe thing now) : one man's orgasmic dream ride - Ford Escort MkII with a V8, and 'Dirty Harry' airbrushed custom paint, is somebody else's Chavvy pile of cack.

The fact that so many 'custom' basses come up for sale must surely bring into question the validity of the thought process of ordering one - if so many people buy one, and then sell it, surely (barring financially necessary clear outs) that's because it didn't live up to the dream? The problem is of course, unlike going to a retailer and trying a number of P basses (for example) until you find 'the one', you get what you are given when the Luthier's work is done.

There's also the image issue : if you are auditioning for a new band and you pull out a 'coffee table' 6 string, its likely to scare the natives - people like what they know, and you'll go a long way to find anyone more conservative than guitar players.

    Are Motorhead still selling wine?

Looks like it - plus beer, and whiskey.....

Some of the articles I've read suggest that whilst he's very happy with the money, to the point where he is making more than he ever has, Lemmy has some reservations about some of the choices being made by the management - not least the sex toy range! It's such a strong brand image though - why not use it as his pension? I can't imagine anyone is going to begrudge him the financial rewards - no-one can question his rock & roll authenticity - he's hardly a 'plastic' rock star, just cashing in.

I can't be bothered to follow the link - Is there an Orgasmatron, an Iron Fist and a Bomber..? If not, there should be.
