Muse Bass Sound
That'll be Morgan Nicholls. You can see him skulking around in the back of this video. As far as I know he's only been on the more recent tours though.
Thanks for the info! Laughing at "skulking" - that's exactly right! I had a go on some pedals yesterday and can see how *totally* easy it would be to get carried away on effects. Oh dear. Equipment intensive hobbies are NOT cool MUST......BE......STRONG..... Hehe!
  2.
But you'd like people to provide you with tab free because you're too "lazy" (your own words) to go look for it yaself? Go figure the logic in that.
Nope - happy to pay if decent sources are recommended. At no point did I ask for FREE music.
This is not the first time you've asked for advice or assistance on this forum then shouted at people when they didn't tell you what you wanted to hear. People are free to offer a view. And responses to a post may include other observations - we're not here just to service your requirements and then tiptoe gently away.
It was a simple question with simple answers. Shouting...haha...it's the internet, not Dallas.
Presumably someone once told you that your forthrightness was refreshing. Well, yes, up to the point that it becomes charmless arrogance.
Thank you for that observation. The minute you become personal, it means you have nothing constructive to offer and have lost any debate. To insult another is a failure to rebut the truth.
Others have also been polite enough not to mention....are as worthlessly subjective as your views on copyright theft are idly self-contradictory and regurgative.
This is not correct and is your assumption. At no point did I ask for FREE tab.
By your own admission, you're still learning. Before you move on to songs and bass playing, a first priority would be to learn simple politeness towards people offering to help you at your request.
I respectfully suggest the same as opposed to your self-fulfilling prophecy of making random assumptions. Did you have a written music source you wanted to offer?
  3.
I think the point is that she's lazy, therefore wants something already written down. While it's true that they're rarely ever 100% correct they can still provide most of a song. IF there's a bit wrong here and there it's not too hard to make the adjustment.
Haha, yes the title was humorous, I really just wanted to use the time for practice, not trawling around the net! Will reply to your PM in a bit.
  4.
Hi AM you say that when you were younger you use to go to the library for sheet music, do you read music? If you can then you should be able to get a good idea of the basslines you are after by listening back to the tracks then writing out chord charts for each song, once you have the key of each song and the chord progressions, writing the bassline should be straight forward, that and a good bit of using your ear to check. Tab on the internet is notoriously bad and offers little in the way of being able to play a bassline correctly. Good luck.
Hiya Steve Thanks for the constructive advice. I have noticed that internet tab isn't particularly optimal! Good advice on working out chords, I am still learning the fretboard, so where tab does come in useful is actually working out optimal positions to play sequences of notes....for instance when I hear a slide in the music or a passage of notes, I can play it by ear quite quickly, but the tabs that show the strings and fret positions are useful sometimes. Notation however along with tab is a great combination as then you have both notes and rhythm. The danger for me is that my ear playing is developed enough that I could easily find myself in a position when I can learn/improvise but not even know what notes I am playing or in what key on the bass. Would rather avoid this as it can get messy later on. Many thanks AM
  5.
Chill out and enjoy the forum - no one's here to wind you up or be rude, most of the regulars and longer serving BCers are very helpful and by the same chalk very keen to understand where exactly people are coming from and what their angle is so we can give the best advice.
If you look at the opening gambit of the thread, I asked for sources of written music. I did not ask for a big debate on MY chosen learning methodology. You elected to commence a semantic debate over my learning style.
Maybe I'll wind my neck in and keep any advice to myself in future if it's going to get a spoilt brat response.
Perhaps that's a good idea if you are unable to answer the actual question asked. I respectfully remind you that you freely elected to ignore my request for sources of written music and offered YOUR (unsolicited) advice on my learning style. You appear to have a propensity for answering a different question to that which was actually asked. How I decide to learn is my choice and if I want perspectives on that, I will ask specifically.
Remember that a lot is "lost in translation" in posts and people sometimes seek clarification.
I refer you respectfully to your own advice. Best regards AM
  6.
AM, you obviously have a huge attitude problem/chip on your shoulder and you give the impression that the world owes you something. I'd respectfully ask you to keep a lid on it and grow up a bit. Mewsie has done absolutely nothing to prompt such a sh*tty reaction from you. May I suggest you go out for a walk and contemplate a few things about how communities such as BC work. So many of your posts are so negative and aggressive - get it sorted and stop spewing your vitriolic bile over the pages of this forum.
My reply was perfectly polite and professional. "Vitriolic bile" made me laugh though - a bit over the top. Regards AM
  7.
AM, we've been here before, people are trying to help you, please be nice. you may find the more you lose it in your replies, the less replies and help you'll get.
This is a bit over the top.
you are lucky to be able to do this by ear.
It's not luck, it's hard work.
quickly learning these songs by ear and then transcribing them strikes me as an awesome way to develop more than one skill.
If I had time for that sort of thing, I would, in any case, there's far quicker ways to transcribe music than learning by ear and writing the notes down.
learning to understand people speaking a new language is one thing, learning to speak it yourself is another, so transcribing would definitely help your reading, and not only that, you'd be helping others in the future by having them available.
I don't need help with the mechanics of reading music. Also, in context, transcribing does nothing to assist sight-reading. Furthermore, I do not agree with transcribing other people's music then providing it free, just the same as I do not agree with stealing music by MP3 download. Both of these practices deprive the original music creator of their rightful income. I will happily buy tab/notation or music recordings if and when good sources are recommended. Love to help other but time doesn't permit that right now. Thanks to all for the tab sources, the ones with decent notation are the ones I was after. Regards AM
  8.
Not one's on most tab sites. Aquire Guitar Pro 5, it's great for tabs with notation. I can't abide by tab on it's own, I need notation as well. I just wish I could read the music properly, I should learn really. Anyway, once you have guitar pro go here
Thank you. That's EXACTLY what I was after. As a child I used to go to the library for sheet music so I'm not particularly familiar with the nuances of tabs/notation on the internet. Many thanks. Regards AM
  9.
I'm not sure how using tab is going to help with reading
Any decent tabs have notation too............
  10.
So, are you saying you have deliberately restricted your ear training because you want to learn to read better? I don't see the logic. It's like saying that you have cut back on conversing in Italian because you want to improve your Italian reading skills. You can never ever do too much ear training; life is not long enough.
NO! Look - I can pick up an instrument and learn by ear, very quickly and have done for years. This becomes restrictive when there are occasional passages of music that are difficult to learn by ear and being able to read these is a useful tool. One example - You wouldn't expect to turn up and record a part in a studio by learning it by ear before hand, sometimes a score is given out on the day and you are expected to sight read it OFF THE SHEET. That does not mean I will take one or other approach with the bass ALL OF THE TIME. I will work on both. But I am deliberately trying to avoid just becoming an ear player. I can learn any one of these songs BY EAR in a quick amount of time. But that is NOT helping me to develop READING. I disagree fundamentally - from MY personal experience, you CAN do too much ear playing by ear, to the detriment of learning rudimentary music. A good musician is versatile enough to do both. If you want to debate the semantics, open a thread elsewhere, this thread is for finding tabs. Regards AM
  11.
Can I be even more lazy and say go download the tunes and use your ears like the way us over 30s had to! Its called ear training!!!!
Interesting assumption Have listened already, just want the tabs as a reference source Playing by ear is by by far the quickest and easiest but a bad habit to just do ear playing alone longer term. I vowed not to go down the road of playing purely by ear because I want to develop my reading as well.
  12. Aloha I have agreed to go to a rehearsal end of Jan and need tabs for the following songs - I know most of them and can probably play by ear but will be handy to have tabs as reference. I'm trying to play as many styles as possible in the name of versatility. However, the more time I waste trawling the net for tabs, the less practice time I have! Soooooo.......anyone feeling bored/mad enough to find good tabs......I suppose there might be beer involved as and when you have the misfortune to meet me somewhere along the way! Songs as follows: Celebrity Skin (Hole) Crack the Liars Smile (Drain Sth) Crackpot Baby (L7) Enter Sandman (Metallica) Gimme More (Britney Spears)=Hoping To Change into Heavy Rock Version!!! He’s My Thing (Babes in Toyland) Inside (Stiltskin) Mother (Danzig) My Angel (Rock Goddess)=1/2 step higher than original Slide (L7) To be Betrayed (Rock Goddess)=1/2 step higher than original Violet (Hole) War with You (L7) You Suck (Maxitit) ------------------------------------- Danke Schon :-) AM
  13. Yo foolios What is the best way to lower the action? I actually quite like the action being high but it's hard work on the old fretting hand. I think the action can be altered by adjusting the truss rod with an allen key...but can you do it just by adjusting the saddles at the bridge?? I just want to get the strings a little bit closer to the fretboard. Then I can practice for another 40 hours a day with less wrist pain. Mehehe. Answers on a postcard Cheers AM

    Muse Bass Sound
I believe on the record it is a mixture of real bass and synth playing the same line. As for your question about bass synths* - it's a question with an open answer. Any synth could be used as a bass synth (ie. play in the C1 range or whatever). Some synths are more suited for basses though. Moog Little Phatty (or most other Moog synths such as the Minimoog). The Little Phatty is also good for lead lines: http://www.moogmusic.com/littlephatty/?sec...;product_id=227 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9hufwMENvhI&...feature=related Moog also made a dedicated bass pedal synth: Taurus : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=frRx-AOZYvg A great site for exploring classic synths: http://www.vintagesynth.com/index.html There are a million software synthesisers too. There is a whole niche that replicate hardware (ie. the Minimonsta is based on the Minimoog). Some people say the sound doesn't compare the hardware, but the quality of softsynths has got to a point where it's pretty amazing and hard to tell (mostly depends on your settings and mixing of the track to get a good sound). Try sites like http://www.kvraudio.com or http://www.soundonsound.com * Remember there's a difference between a hardware synth (makes sound) and a MIDI keyboard controller (which often doesn't make sound itself but can be used to play softsynths or hardware synths - ie. rack versions like my Nord Lead 2X synth).
Hiya thanks for the replies, I like all the "synth" sounds but my favourite stuff has got to be Origin of Symmetry. I have to be honest, I'm not that interested in software (possibly with the exception of 1 or 2 examples) and I prefer hardware. Nothing beats racks/sound modules, I used to use a K1 and Roland sound module/TR rack and have yet to hear some of those sounds matched, let alone surpassed. I have been told the Muse sound is cultivated using custom build pedals, just not sure how true this is. Just would love to know if it's done using bass synth or otherwise. Also, I have heard there was a sonic scientist hiding at a few gigs using sequencers and synth stuff, would love to know if this is true! Regards AM
  15.
I think that's a bit of an unfair statement. I would like to point out something from a previous post of yours: 'it is an inherent mistrust issue with extremely valid underpinning reasons', in relation to doctors being 'c*nts'. In the topic, you made this initially strongly worded post and didn't give specific details. I'm sure Mac Daddy doesn't want to go into specific details, but I'm sure they're valid too.
Tim The example is not a valid comparison - I was not making *specific* comments about a *specific* business, but rather generic comments about a profession, which is my opinion and not expressed as factual commentary against any one individual or company. For obvious reasons, sometimes personal details are inappropriate on public internet forums. I did provide relevant details in that I stated that mistakes made by doctors have previously nearly cost me my life, several times. That is more than enough detail in the context of that particular discussion. Without a big semantic debate, if I am in the wrong, I put my hands up and admit it. Everyone's professional integrity is different. I just see the power of the internet and it's implications for specialist businesses (and us, the customer), as being particularly important and therefore sometimes unclear statements warrant being challenged. I'm out of this now, too busy, enjoy your Christmas, hope Santa brings something good. Bye for now Regards AM
  16.
Awesome, I'm glad to hear that new neck position worked out for you If you manage to figure out what notes are off I'd really appreciate it, haven't yet found a guitarist who'll play along with me, but when I do I don't want to be out of key haha ^_^ Such a great song for the bass though, and in general really -- one of my all time favorites. I haven't played it in aggggeeesss though -- and I never added any extra runs, I was too rubbish (probably still am! )
Hi again, it is a bit better, still pain there but hey ho! I agree, it is a classic, classic bassline - it doesn't have to be technical and complex to be classic and Sultans is also one of my all time favourites! Listen to the musicianship in that or even private investigations and most "modern" bands are a f*cking joke in comparison. You can find on youtube, guitarists that play it so it is fun to play along or use itunes but manipulate the equaliser so you can configure what instruments stay in.. Rgds AM
  17.
Haha maybe, I never played much by way of the chorus....the verse is much more fun to play. if you don't mind, which bits aren't right?
Hi again, I love them both, the possibilities of adding little runs are endless! If I get a chance tomorrow I will PM you, there are a few notes in the tab that sound a half step out, but I can't be sure until I get a proper chance to listen again. As you rightly said, angling the neck up a bit does make a big difference, I managed to squeeze in a few more hours tonight, great fun, man I love playing fine tunage!!!!
  18.
Sorry, but i think you're being a bit over the top here. For one thing, he never said it was without basis. Maybe he did have cause to be unhappy, the fact that it has now been sorted doesn't mean that it didn't happen, but it means it's been sorted and should probably be left alone. And he probably didn't post exactly what happened as it's not really appropriate for discussion if what has happened has been sorted now. I think posting the exact circumstances will make situations worse and provoke reactions such as yours. You need to calm down a little bit...
This is an illogical leap. Asking someone, quite reasonably, to qualify their statements, in the context that they are potentially damaging to a business, does not mean I am not calm. In any professional occupation, if someone makes ambiguous comments, which are potentially detrimental to business interests, then they should expect to qualify those comments, by providing details. If someone is going to accuse a shop of lying to them in such a black and white manner, then it is only reasonable to expect details to be provided, then, rightfully, potential customers can make up their own minds as to the facts. Without the facts, the allegation is unsubstantiated and indeed potentially damaging. This is a basic tenet of business. Regards AM
  19.
me neither, and that along with Alex's pm's are why I was happy to modify my posts.
But that isn't good enough - your initial post on the subject stated explicitly that you had been lied to. As the only commentator I have seen making a negative comment about the gallery, it stands to reason that perhaps there is a learning point here for others. As others have said, anyone can have a bad day. You still haven't explained what actually happened, just made an initial strongly worded post then revised it, without any details about what the original issue was. When everyone complained about the Bass Merchant, they did not make ambiguous complaints with no basis. They made categorical statements with substantive issues detailed, i.e. lazy shop staff, not being allowed to try basses, etc etc. Like I stated previously, it is not acceptable to damage the reputation of a business with no proper basis. The gallery were professional enough to respond and make the effort to engage with you to understand their role in matters. This is a testament to their professional operating parameters. You should accordingly consider your own role and whether or not an apology or a proper correction from you is warranted. If it was a breakdown in communications then it will help others in the community to understand one way or another how to avoid a similar situation in the future. Like I said, we are quick to criticise poor service and far too slow to recognise great service. Regards AM
  20. I think a few notes are wrong in there! But thanks!
  21. Thank you for understanding!!!!!!! Will give it a go. Just played for another while, I can't help myself!! Will need to find some cheap liquor to kill the pain! Naughty naughty. Will look at the link in a bit. EDIT - just looked at the link - that is EXACTLY the same position I am playing in at the moment, it does really help but a bit achey on the shoulder. Yeah, no way could I play and hold the neck horizontal - not a chance. Cheers AM
I was going to say this as well, don't go left-handed unless there really is no other alternative -- plus the fact that you'd have to re-learn everything you've done in the past weeks -- which is probably not the hugest deal, but the limiting your options bit you may regret later, if only for the fact that you won't really be able to play anyone else's bass at your next local bassbash In regards to the medical aspect -- I understand, I won't go into detail, but trust me I can understand where you're coming from. Someone else mentioned a chiropractor, would you consider something like that, or some alternative treatment, an option? Anyways, the real reason I posted is because I think I might be able to help -- a few people have mentioned playing height, and playing hand-position, and I think that may help you out a lot. When I play, my wrist is usually almost straight and it's just my hand which is bent, unless I'm playing on the E string, in which case it's often bent only slightly. You can see it here where I'm playing. I'm sure I've got my bass a bit too high to be a rock god, but I'm not exactly Mark King either -- yea, anyways, I thought that might help, as it reduces the bending-your-wrist bit, doesn't involve you changing your bass or buying a new one, and avoids the doctors. It may take a while to get used to, and you might not exactly have the muscles for it yet, but as long as it's only the muscles which are sore and there's no agony, then you'll be ok -- building up the muscles takes forever, but you'll get there. Of course, I could just be completely spouting nonsense, in which case I'm sure someone point it out.
22. Anyone got tab for Sultans of Swing, I have learned it mostly by ear just wanted to see the little "fill" notes on tab. Cheers AM
  23.
Try being a lefty bass player, playing a right- handed bass, right handed and re-strung back to front..........
Haha, looks like you're in the weirdo club with me :-) EDIT - have you got any clips of you playing?? I might make some footage later of the highly amusing situation of playing a right handed bass upside down with the strings the wrong way round.
  24.
smaller feet too, so they can get nearer to the kitchen sink
Haha...soooo predictable Well, here's one for you. Q. How many divorced men does it take to change a lightbulb? A. It doesn't matter, they never get the house! Coat on, running for the door!!!! Just tried to play a few things upside down, it was highly amusing, like left foot braking!
  25.
If you've got a MIM jazz, and want a lefty version, they are available. PMT in Brum have two. They'll set you back about £400 though. If you're not too fussed about quality for the moment, if you search "left handed bass" on evilbay, i think you'll find a Harrier version for not a lot of coinage.
That's outrageous! I *was* going to switch onto a MM fender jazz or a USA jazz but now not sure if you could even get them as left handers. This sucks! So my choice is spend coin doing the reconfig job on my right handed bass, spend coin on a left hander or go and see Harold Shipman and hope he doesn't try and finish me off!
